I have the S-2 and now am thinking of upgrading to S-5.

I already have 2 - 1.0 GB cards. How many pictures (if I wanted highest quality setting) would a 1.0 GB card hold in the S-5?

Also, how many minutes of video would it hold?

Thanks,

TC:cool1:

I know the video capability of the S5 is greater than the S3 - which can take about 8 minutes of video on the best setting (up to 1GB I believe, not positive about that). I used 2GB "ultra" (ie higher speed) cards on our trip last month (which were on sale at Radio Shack for $20 several weeks ago) and those worked out great for both photos and video. I'd say you should probably pick up a couple of those for your S5 since you're a regular here on the PB (most users probably wouldn't need that much).

As for pictures, I don't know exactly how many you can take with a 1GB card using the best setting, but using the 2GB cards I had plenty of space every day for lots of photos and video, but downloaded nightly. There is a way of telling how many pictures you have left down in the righthand corner of the camera, I believe someone mentioned it a few days ago on the S3 thread. HTH

Movie functions
Powerful video functions make the PowerShot S3 IS far more than just a high-performance digital still camera. A dedicated movie button means users do not need to switch modes to start recording, so spontaneous moments can be instantly captured in full motion. Users can record smooth 30-frame-per-second VGA quality movies of up to 1 GB with stereo sound, or create 60-frame-per-second QVGA clips for sharp slow-motion playback. The Movie mode also allows users to pre-select exposure and white balance, zoom throughout the camera's focal range, and manually adjust focus while shooting. A Photo In Movie feature enables the capture of full resolution digital stills during video recording.

S5
A variety of movie-making options With a highly flexible movie mode, you can create the movie that’s perfect for any application. Select from VGA (640 x 480 pixels) with frame rates of 30 fps and 30 fps LP, also QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) with frame rates of 60 fps and 30 fps for recording up to 1 hour or 4GB. With the S5 IS, seamless movie shooting is easy -- just by pressing the Movie button without switching to shooting mode. The PowerShot S5 IS supports the USB 2.0 Hi-Speed standard, so you’ll enjoy the fastest possible data transfer speeds when using a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed compatible computer.

The thing that's deceiving is when they say up to one hour (which can be found on the Canon website for the S3) - I think that's on the lowest quality/smallest file setting. If you leave it on best quality it's siginificantly shorter, like 8 minutes on the S3 anyway.

The question then becomes, how many minutes of video are you planning to shoot? If you want to shoot longer than 8 minutes, you should probably change the settings or plan to stop and start again (and possibly change cards), can edit later.

Perfect time to get the S5. I got mine on sale last night from circuitcity.com for $354 before tax. That is a heck of a deal. Now if I only knew how to work it.

Not meaning to hijack the thread - but the video thing has me curious. Do you also get sound with the video?

Yes ... 640x480 @ 30fps with full stereo sound and IS!

And, you can zoom while taking movies and you can still take a still (at normal settings) while taking video, too! :thumbsup2

Wow - sounds way cool. Now am I going to be able to wait for my anniversary or christmas to get it? There have been so many times the past few months we have gone past something and I wished I had a camera with me - this one sounds perfect to just keep in my purse - of course I will need a bigger purse to carry it in. ;)

Without any extra attachments, an S3/S5 should easily fit in a decent-sized purse.

The S3 has a max video clip size of 1G (about 8min) and the S5 has a max clip of 4G. I've not found the 1G limit to be a problem as I tend to take short clips, anyway.

Jen, we actually picked up a used S2IS (craigslist, $200) mainly for video!
