We are thinking of purchasing DVC.

We haven't figured out how many points yet. I've been reading to see how it works and the one thing I haven't found is how long the DVC is for.

Does it just end one day and you no longer have DVC ? So the longer you have your DVC the less value it is since it will end ?

I read that the new AKL end 2047. So does that mean in 40 yrs our contract is over and we no longer receive the points each year ?

AKV ends in 2057. It's a right to use lease. Think of it as pre paying for abbout 50 years worth of stays.

The ownership is 50 years at each resort, so the expiration depends upon when the resort opened. AKV expires in 2057, and I believe SSR expires in 2054.

As far as the number of points to purchase, just remember that the larger contracts are harder to resell later. Also the current promotion being offered is:

Purchase at least 160 points at AKV or SSR and receive a discount off of the price of $104/point. The discount is $8 per point at AKV or $10 per point at SSR. Instead of the price discount, you can also opt to receive 160 free points to be used within your first 12 months.

If you are referred by a current owner, and purchase at least 225 points at AKV or SSR then you'll receive the price discount PLUS 160 free points!

You can purchase directly from Disney, or purchase via resale.

Basically all DVC resorts are available at one time or another, but you may have to waitlist for some. The expiration dates are all on January 31st of the year indicated as shown below:

Old Key West: 2042 (or 2057 for those contracts which have the 15 year extension.)

Saratoga Springs: 2054

Animal Kingdom: 2057

All other resorts are 2042. There is no word yet on whether extensions will be offered on these resorts or not. Disney seems to be testing the waters seeing how many OKW extensions are sold.

I just wanted to add that you shouldn't necessarily judge a timeshare simply by the term length, right to use lease vs. perpetual deed. 50 years is a long time for a resort. There aren't many that you will still want to own 50 years from now, esp since the maint fees could be $3,000 or more per year by then.

Wow JsMom, you must have thousands of points looking at all your upcoming trips, or tons of money. Have a wonderful time, and tell us all about them when you get back. I especially want to hear about Tokyo.
