For me there are three. In order:
- Requiem for a Dream. The most emotionally charged and adult film I have come across. Its ability to play on one's emotions and feelings is incredible. I can't watch it again - it's torn me apart already - but I recognise it as the best film I have ever seen.
- Hannibal. Very adult, but seamlessly put together. A lot of the reason I like Hannibal so much is the soundtrack. Hans Zimmer is impeccable, best music track for any film, ever. He even composed a short opera, to the words of Dante's Pilgrim, Vide Cor Meum (I see your Heart). So moving. Creepy film too, with a dark romantic undertone.
- Silence of the Lambs. Hopkins and Foster display the BEST on screen chemistry EVER. Did you know that Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter never blinks once in the film? There's no way that it should have gotten away with the rating it did - it's more adult even than that! - but it is an absolute masterpiece.
