S/O Coronavirus School Closing considered in your area?

Cuomo just announced SUNY schools will be closing and moving to online classes March 19
He said there may be exceptions for students with issues or those who have some classes that need to be held on campus.
Not really sure if dorms are closing, he says
The campuses, he said, will be closing on March 19, but the dorms may stay open to address any specific issues of students.

"They are not evicting anyone," Cuomo said. "They are not closing the dorm and kicking you out."

They are switching to online learning, he said.

Most of the colleges and universities around Washington, DC - Baltimore are closing and going to online learning: Georgetown, GWU, American U, Gallaudet, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland College Park, UMBC, Towson, etc. I live in this area and my older child is in his senior year at one of these schools so it's tough for him. I'm expecting K-12 schools in this area to follow at some point - and my younger one is a senior in high school. I agree with the closings but it's definitely not the way they wanted to finish off their senior years.

University of Virginia just announced they are moving to online only classes until 4/5/20, at which point they will reassess. Their students are on Spring Break now. they are asking them not to come back to campus unless absolutely necessary, and even then, they want they all gone by Sunday. They are to bring enough stuff home to get through the entire semester. Answers to questions about housing and dining will be forthcoming. I am so glad my DS graduated from UVA last year, and I am heartbroken for these kids now.

Virginia Tech, my daughter's school, will have an announcement coming at 5:00 PM. We'll see what they say. She's going to be so bummed. It's her boyfriend's senior year...what a way to end things.

That said, I think it is the right decision if we are to slow down the spread and keep hospitals from getting overwhelmed. And my anxiety is lessened just by knowing the USA is taking this seriously and putting anti-spread measures in place.

Got word this afternoon- Someone at an elementary school in our Cobb County, Georgia district has a confirmed case. That school is closing for 14 days. The rest of the schools in the district remain open for now.

We had a mini-training today for teachers with guidelines on how to conduct classes online.

just read on another forum that I frequent that it's very possible that Nyc-Metro area schools will close by the end of next week - person claims that they know someone high up within the DOE -

I would take that info with a grain of salt. There are articles in local newspapers that give detailed plans of the direction NYC public schools think they will go with. It involves social centers, remote and live staff to ensure parents don't need to stop working.

We're in north NJ. DS17 had 1/2 day school yesterday to give staff time to prepare. Today kids were told it's likely they won't be returning to school after they get let out on Friday, for at least 2 weeks.

I hope you hear some good news.
My dd's spring break starts Monday, they told the students to bring home all necessary work in case they move to all online classes before it ends.
She's doing her Capstone this semester, there is stuff she can do on her own but she also needs the lab facilities, she said she hasn't heard any information on what happens to her and other students if they move to all online.
My ds still hasn't heard anything at all, his Spring break isn't for another couple weeks. I'm hoping they leave the lab facilities open on his campus but I am worried they won't.

I hope you get good news too.

As of last night, DD's school is going to online-only classes for the first two weeks back from break, but how labs and other things that can't be done remotely is still up in the air. They've cancelled all classes on Monday and Tuesday (the first days back) to hold faculty and department meetings to make those decision. One of her professors has said she's hoping to get permission for small group meetings for the midterm (2-3 students) because a conversational interaction is part of the exam, but it remains to be seen whether the university will approve it. There's no talk about closing campus facilities yet, but as soon as DD is back in California she's going to reach out to her aunt who lives in the area to make a just-in-case plan for getting her moved out of the dorm on short notice if need be.

Locally, University of Minnesota is now moving to all virtual classes (no face-to-face) starting Monday.

I get the alumni emails both from my undergrad as well as well as the university I went to for grad school, and both universities are doing the same- going to all virtual, no face-to-face.

My daughter's school had her parent -teacher conferences cancelled this thurs and Friday - think it's just a matter of time before the schools close

Time will tell. DGD doesn't go to a public, parochial, or charter school so different protocol.
NYC.

Our school system that had a teacher confirmed will be closed again tomorrow. Then Thursday every school except the two the teacher taught at will reopen. The two schools, one closed for another week, the other two weeks. AND the fire house that responded to school when teacher got sick ... closed. DON'T THEY PRACTICE FOR THIS TYPE OF THING AND RESPOND ACCORDINGLY. I never even thought about them starting to close emergency services. Of course, it's early I imagine we'll be dealing with this again in the school system.

METRO ATLANTA

WELL ............ determined teacher was at the school that was closed for next week longer than they thought, now will be closed two weeks. See this is the domino effect. No sooner will they be ready to open then someone could test positive. This is why is makes sense to do mass closure and get it over with than continue a rolling shut down that is unrecoverable.

Again, I am not in panic mode ~ although double thinking the beer festival this weekend ~ but I do know that we can't ignore this away. I'd rather a shorter pro-active plan than to continue a wait and see, and band-aid each week. You have to starve it. It won't be fun but the long term impact on finances, timetables etc will be less severe.

At least 2 colleges in WV are going to online classes. There have been no confirmed cases in WV yet.

Well my alma mater located about just over 30miles from me made an announcement.

Spring Break is going on now (started the 9th) and will end the 15th. However, no in-person classes will begin once spring break officially ends. Instead from March 16th-22nd faculty will prepare for the switch to online learning and then on March 23rd school will start back up and will be online format until further notice. Each week however the need to be remote will be evaluated though they anticipate needing it for at least several weeks. Anyone taking online classes already will NOT be impacted by the delay.

What is important to me relevate to the discussion is this part of their public notice more importantly the bolded: "This approach limits in-person exposure after spring break to align with the estimated COVID-19 incubation period, and allows faculty members a modest amount of time to prepare and begin the transition to online instruction. It also keeps the university functioning and helps students continue toward their educational goals."

Campus, dorm rooms and dining halls will remain open.

No, but we are just about to go into our 2 week spring break, so school will be closed for 2 weeks come Friday. Some of the private schools are closing a bit early.

Here in NYC - DD just texted me from her middle school - plans are to go to homeschooling for online school - tmw might be their last day physically going to school

Per family in NY, several school districts just north of the city are looking at home-based plans too which sounded like they could happen at any moment.

Pretty much every university in Michigan is now moving to online classes for the rest of the semester. However, public schools for the most part remain open (for now).
