We have never driven to Florida. We have a 2003 Toyota Corolla. It's just the two of us. We would like to stop overnight in Washngton DC to view the new WWII Memorial.

In order to avoid rush hour traffic, when should we leave home?
How many days do you think it will take to arrive in MCO?
Approx. how many fill-ups of gas do you think it will take?

Thanks for all your answers. I appreciate it.

Hi. we live in Mansfield which is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Falmouth.

It takes us about 3.5 hours to New York City. That is where you will run into the most traffic. You will have to leave early enough to beat it or late enough to miss it.

We usually leave in the early AM and make it to South of the Border for our stop. We have a child and find it to difficult to drive all the way thru.

We take 95 south the whole way I prefer this but I am sure you will find others that will recommed I think 84? to miss some of NY.

It is difficult to figure what you will need for gas from what we use because every car is different and it all depends on how fast you go. We try to average 80 :moped:

Just figure what you get for gas mileage by how many MPG you get with the amount of miles you will be traveling. That will give you an estimated amount of gallons then you can figure it times aprx. 2.25 ( that is the average I would figure ) because you might find it cheaper in some places and more in others.

I hope you have a fun and safe trip. We are going in Oct. but we got great fares on Jet Blue so because of the gas $ we are flying this time but we usually drive so we have our own car.

The one (and thank God only) time I drove to WDW from Wareham I left at noon and didn't encounter any traffic, but since you want to stop in DC, leaving that late may not be the best idea for you.

Well my guess is that it's roughly 7 1/2 hours from cape cod to DC and then another 16 hours (approx.) from DC to Orlando. So that will give you a rough idea of the time involved. From DC you have to decide how many hours you are willing to drive per day because you have approx. 16 hours from DC to Orlando. One suggestion would be to drive from DC to Savannah Georgia (nice city to visit) which will take you approx. 8 1/2 hours and then you still have apporx. 4 1/2 from Savannah to Orlando. Wow!!!!
You won't have any problem with rush hour traffic if you leave early in the morning. You just don't want to be driving through New York City between 3:00 and 7:00pm.
A conservative guess at how many tank fulls you will need with your Toyota would be 4 tanks so you are talking approx. $110.00 worth of gas base upon $2.05 per/gallon. That's one way and doesn't include anything other than getting from Cape Cod to Orlando. (no extra driving considered)
I think my estimates are fairly close but somebody can correct me if you think I'm off on my approximations.
Good Luck and remember to have fun. You'll need lots of coffee for the ride.

We are 2 hours west of you in Warren. We are driving down in Dec (first time actually driving, have been via car when we were kids though).
My parents are moving to Lady Lake,FL next month and we're helping them drive down. We plan to leave from our house at 5am and figure its gonna take about 19hours total, I think my dad has made reservations in Virginia for the first night.

For our family trip in Dec, we'll probably leave around 5am as well and hopefully get breakie somewhere in NJ/Delaware. We'll drive till 5pmish that night and the next day we'll drive however long it takes to get to my parents. Stay the weekend at my parents (don't wanna waste my precious DVC points LOL) and pop into SSR on Sunday.
As of now I figure that we should make around 700mi the first day and the rest the next (around 600). That's 4 total fill ups at say $28-$30 per fill so it should cost between $112 and $120 each way (basically the cost of 2 plane tickets and since we'd need 4 seats that's a good savings especially since we'd have to rent a car anyway)

A little advice from DC here. You don't want to arrive in the area between 4 and 6:30 PM and the further you are outside that window, the lighter the traffic will be. If you actually stay downtown you'll be going against traffic heading out of the city so departure in the AM shouldn't be a big problem. From DC it takes 13-14 hours to get to Orlando via I-95 depending on stops and traffic. If you plan to break that leg of the trip into two pieces I recommend stopping in Savannah (9 hrs. from DC, 5 fr. Orlando), Brunswick, GA (10/4) or N. Jacksonville, FL (11/3).
