This topic was taking over another thread but I thought it was definitely something to continue...

I don't get the notion out there that "you RV/camp because you can't afford a hotel." What a crock. For starts, RVs don't necessarily run cheap! And, for my family and I, its a matter of choice. I have 3 children 6 and under, and it's so much more enjoyable for us to camp. The kids settle very quickly because it's very familiar to them, its just the view out the window that changes! DH and I can sit outside whilst they sleep, and not in the dark corner whispering to each other trying not to wake them!

Interesting thought - according to The Unofficial Guide to WDW 2008 edition, the All Start Resorts and Pop Century Resorts Typical Room is 260 sq ft. My TT is 27 ft long by 8 ft wide = 216 sq ft. Plus the 17' awning space and the whole of outside, RVs win hands down :cool1: And its mine, with a kitchen, refrigerator, only needs packing once and best of all, I know who's slept on my bed :)

If I didn't have an RV payment, RV insurance, over $400 in fuel to the Fort and back, and whatever else I am forgeting, we could easily stay at the All-Star resorts, drive my wife's Freestyle, and save a ton.

BUT, I wouldn't be in my own bed, the boys couldn't go out and ride their bikes, and Hoop-de-Doo and the campfire just wouldn't be the same.

I'd rather stay in my travel trailer than the Contemporary even if the prices were the same.;)

My wife and kids love to camp the first night for them is hell but after that they settle down and get back to normal but for our family we go to Disney for teh hotels (mind you next Oct we are camping  ). I have given in to teh wife and will be pulling her tent trailer to Disney for her but I only have to deal with it for 5 days then we can go home. By home I mean to DVC I can't wait for that portion of the trip LOL. BTW we have 4 kids 3 of them under 6 our oldest is 11 the youngest is only 7 months old.

When you stay at FW you talk to your neighbors because you have stuff in common. You trailer, your truck , the golf cart the mpg you got on the way down the list can go on. At resort you just want your neighbor to be quite and turn down the tv :happytv: . Y'all can have the resorts I'll take the Fort and defender like the Alamo.

LOL to funny I am the type of person that will strike up a conversation with anyone. It could be standing in the john taking a leak or in the elevator. I talk to our neighbours in the hotels all the time my wife is the complete opposite she is not one to strike up a convo with anyone especially when camping LOL. She is always weary that the person will invade her space and want to sit around and talk all the time kinda like I do LOL. She likes to just keep to her self and do her own thing and not be bothered by others. She will be friendly and say hi but don't expect a lengthy conversation out of it.

Hotels are for when you only have time to sleep. My camper is my home. Pre-camping, DH and I would be ready to come home after 4 days, no matter where we were. With the camper, at the end of a 2 week vacation we're saying "do we HAFTA go home???" Its about having your own bed and surroundings and eating the same food as at home sometimes. And like a pp said, the kids don't have to settle in --- in our case that means fighting over who sleeps where. No question in the camper. We like to pretend its cheaper, but we know it isn't.

Dont get get wrong I dont want to talk forever. But when we tried the POP everybody was in a hurry and looked stressed us included. The Fort is just more laid back.

What a crock! Do these people know what a MH costs ???

According to some people who stay at resorts, the campground is for the poor lmao.

There was a movie a few years ago I'm thinking was by Miachel Crighton, called The Client with Susan Sarandon. In it, a police officer threatens her son that if he doesn't tell him the truth his brother (who witnessed a man kill himself and was in shock) will be sent to an insanasylum for the poor. Please don't ask me why, but whenever I hear people referring to FW as the poor folks place I think about that scene.

I don't care if I look over at the next site and the people are sleeping on a lawn chair it makes no difference to me. I tent camped at the fort as a young boy and hopefully I'll camp there with my grandkids one day in a moho. One of the cool things at the fort and camping in general is no matter how much cash you got, people from all walks of life like coming out to chat.

So to make a long story short if you people don't start actin right I'm gonna send you to FW with the rest of the poor.

I ain't right.:confused3

LOL your house sounds much like ours we are celebrating 10 years on Feb 14th I am a lucky guy as she ususlly sits and pretends to listen to me ramble on and on forever LOL. As for me I can strike up a conversation about something as simple as the colour of a car or what type of gum you chew LOL.

LONE STAR sorry to hear you felt that way at POP we stayed there for 2 days prior to moving over to SSR this past DEC and loved it my favourite resorts are the value resorts primarily All Star Sports. I had a lot of great conversations with people while at the resort. I find people even while hustling off to everyplace seem far more relaxed while at Disney even those going commando like our family.

I love the Fort and we just started going there this year! We did a trip over Memorial Day and never went into the parks. I took DD and everyone to Chef Mickey and then the dinner at the GF for Cinderella. Never set foot in a park. It was so darn relaxing. Everyone went on the water mice, played in the pool, drove around the campground, movies, etc.

And the best thing is that I can use my DVC points at the campground! When I'm at the resorts I feel like I have to get up and out to the parks. When I'm with my RV I just need to walk out the door and plop my butt in my chair and read a book!!

Oh and my DH will talk to anyone, for hours!!!!!;)

I guess its that I grew up staying in FW. So to me its as much of a part of Disney as the MK. Buy the way F4disneyfan the food court at the POP rules and I do wish that was at FW.

Ya our in laws stayed in a cabin at FW and we went to trails end and were not overly impressed mind you we did love the Hoop Dee Doo. My wifes has her fondest memories of WDW at FW that was the first place they stayed back in 86. Her dad converted a school bus to a motorhome and they drove it down. My guess is you always hold special that first place you ever stay onsite when going to WDW. Even being DVC members I still long to stay at the All Stars each and every trip LOL.

We have stayed at the FW cabins forever, it is like another world there, hotels are stressful altho the WDW ones are wonderful!

As an aside, my son started wrestling around 9yo and we quickly learned that the hotels near the better tournaments in PA and NJ were not the best. Our Minnie Winnie is our second home,WalMart parking lots are our friends- our own sheets, towels pillows and blankets plus food we make our way.. (our son is now 19 and at college)

Tho the Minnie is getting old, my DH and I are thinking of putting it back on the road and taking a trip to Disney,we are empty nesters you know- a cookout/campfire in Feb sounds nice!
