You know I heard that on my way to work this morning. I was laughing out loud and clapping for Miss Etta. I thought that maybe Miss Etta was ill and that was why she wasn't singing at the ball, but I don't think that the idiots planning the event even gave her a courtesy call.

The songwriting team of Mack Gordon and Harry Warren wrote this in 1942 for Glenn Miller and his orchestra.

Etta herself was covering it. Her version was first released in 1961.

It doesn't belong to her, and she should stop acting as if it's her proprietary right to be the only person ever to sing it.

There have been several other recordings of this song, as well. Did she protest each of those?

I'm sure the organizers paid the royalties for use of the song, and as it was the song that the Obamas danced to at every Inaugural Ball they attended, I'm guessing that it was thier choice of a song. They're only obligated to pay the royalty to the owners of the song itself, not consulte with every person who has ever recorded it.

She's just causing a fuss to get publicity.

Nope. They didn't "owe" her anything. Not unless they were going to make a courtesy call to Cyndi Lauper, Celine Dion, Jason Mraz, Christina Aguilera, and every other singer who has ever recorded it.

She may sing the most well known version of it, but Beyonce has recorded it most recently.

Did Etta James make a courtesy call to the Glen Miller orchestra before she recorded their song? Of course not. Her manager obtained permission for her to sing it (by paying for it) and they moved forward.

The Inaugural Committee did the same exact thing. No harm, no foul.

And a "living legend" to you is a "Who's that? I've never heard of her" to me. It's all a matter of perspective.

I have no idea if Miss Etta called Glen Miller or his people directly before she recorded the song. Most likely not, but I doubt that you know the answer for certain, especially since you are not familiar with her.

I hardly see the situation of recording the song vs being asked by your new president to sing the song at the inaugural ball as being similar situations. One is for the sake of the art and the money and the other is an honor. I fail to see why it's so unthinkable that Miss Etta's version would have been in the running, since her version is all that the majority of American's would know if you had asked them 3 years ago, who sang the song. Don't get me wrong, I love big band music, Glen Miller is my favorite of all, but I didn't even realize that he had recorded the song.

And, as to the fact that you don't know who this woman is, it's a shame. While I respect the fact that you have worldly experiences that are much more cultured than mine in many areas, sadly, you have missed out on an amazing artist. I encourage you and anyone here on this board to go download her music or at the very least, look her up for some freebie listening. She is worth the time.

You're absolutely right. There are so many versions out there and I can't say that Etta made it her 'signature' song. If I think of "New York, New York" I connect with Liza, if it's "People" I think of Babs. Etta is trying to make a fuss when there shouldn't be one. I'm sure she's ticked off that she didn't get the spotlight but she's not showing any class now.

Okay, I'm not completely ignorant as to who Etta James is, but I certainly wouldn't call her a living legend. You think she is. That's fine. As I said, perspectives vary, and I don't mean any disrespect of your opinion.

My point was and still is that Etta was owed nothing. She hasn't been "wronged". The Inaugural Committee, assuming that they met the legal obligations of using the song, did what they had to do. Many of them, as Mike pointed out, probably thought she was dead. And perhaps they DID consider her to sing it, but decided that at the "American Block Party Ball" or whatever they called it, that she wasn't recognizable enough for the average American. In which case, they still don't owe her an apology.

It's show BUSINESS. And it comes down to the dollars and sense of things. The rights were purchased to sing a song, and a singer was asked to sing it. That's all that that has to happen. It's what happened when Etta first sang it, it's what happened now.

I can't see getting indignant on her behalf over it. She made her money off of it, now someone else is using it for their own needs. As long as the owners of the music don't mind, I don't see where she has any right to be upset.

That's my opinion, of course. Everyone gets one, and I won't say mine is better than anyone else's.
