Hello all--
What do you do when you run somewhere new?
I'm moving for the summer and wanted to know what you do when you run somewhere new and unfamiliar. I'll be in DC and my primary concern is safety while out. I haven't been there before, I don't know any of the neighborhoods or streets, where to go, where to avoid...

I'm thinking about joining a running club so I can meet new people, but I'm typically an 11-12 minute mile person so pacing is definitely an issue, hence my tendency to run solo while on my home turf. Should I go to a group anyway and just lag behind? Is this poor etiquette?

I think a running group/club is a great idea to get comfortable with the terrain. In terms of understanding an area from a distance standpoint, I'm a big fan of map my run which is great for mapping a neighborhood route. I would also check with some of the local running shops to get some advice...I bet they could give you some feedback.

In terms of general running safety, I'm always cautious about headphones when I'm running in a semi-sketchy area. And I've heard some people carry their phone. Just be careful...if something doesn't seem right, it probably isn't! :)

Wow, DC, one of the best cities I've ever been in for running :). Consider yourself lucky in that regard :).

Where are you moving, into actual DC, or into MD or VA? I know several running clubs in the area, as well as dozens of amazing routes. For the most part I've never felt uncomfortable running anywhere, and I've done runs at 2am (although I'm also a guy so maybe my standards for safety are a little different). There's also as others have mentioned a plethora of running stores, the 2 big ones local to the area are Pacers and Potomac River Running, but there's also Fleet Feet, RoadRunner Sports, Metro Run & Walk.

Oh and most of the running clubs I know and have worked out with all have a range of paces, so you'll def find someone around your pace.

From what I remember from living near DC is that the neighborhoods change practically from block to block. So you'll think you're in a neighborhood that feels OK, then a few minutes later you won't feel like that anymore.

DH went on a work trip out there last year, and had the same experience (and he's a big burly guy with different safety standards).

I think a running club is a great idea!
