Running paths near the parks

We will be visiting in the middle of my son's cross country season. I'm pretty sure the coach will expect him to run while we are there. There will be a treadmill at the hotel, but he isn't used to a treadmill. Are there any paths that are good for running near the parks, or is it generally too congested with traffic? It would have to be someplace he would be safe going alone because none of the rest of us can keep up with him. :-)

What time to security gates go up in the morning? Maybe a large loop around DCA/the Grand?

Easiest route is the 4 mile loop around Disneyland. http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=451270

How many days will he have off in between running and where is he on the team? (top, bottom or middle of the pack) I wouldn't worry too much about taking a few days off, he won't lose much fitness wise since he'll be walking around all day. As a matter of fact the extra running plus all that walking on cement/asphalt may hurt more than help. I do a little running myself and both my kids ran cross country. I think sometimes the coaches put WAY too much emphasis on total miles, running every day, etc.... Each runner needs a more tailored approach. I would not recommend running on the treadmill if he has not used one before.

I like the route the PP posted. We have stayed a couple places around DL (included at the corner of Orangewood & West) and it felt safe enough around there for a morning run. Does he have a FlipBelt or similar - I'd want a phone on him for peace of mind.

I recommend bringing a different pair of shoes for running vs park walking. IMO, it would be too much impact on the shoe cushion to run 3-4 miles and then walk all day. We walked 10 miles each of the three days we were in the park a few weeks ago. The sidewalks are pretty wide around DL and not crowded early in the morning. That said, I avoid sidewalks as much as possible when running (and the sidewalk from Orangewood to Katella isn't the best), so he would have to use his judgement on whether to move to the street for some parts depending on shoulder and traffic.

ETA: don't let him push it too much. With all the extra walking, his muscles may be a bit fatigued. And then going out for a run I think would carry a little higher risk of injury/stress injury

Thank you for your comments. My opinion as a mother... I think the walking is enough to keep him fit for a few days and a little time off from running is good for him. :-) Just trying to plan ahead though. Thank you!

ETA: He is only a Freshman. He is doing well for his age, but still... he's a Freshman. I was a little unprepared for how serious high school sports are!

Are you staying on site?...I know the guest services desks there have running route suggestions and maps available depending on the run length you are looking for.

No, but maybe they would give us some suggestions anyway.

Wondering if he can use the college track down the road when not in use?
