Running for my Disney - a PPTR...

That's a great picture and fantastic progress.

I have to admit that I've been rather slack this week. Although...I've managed to get off the couch and run 10 minutes twice. Doesn't get me very far...but hey...I'm jogging, of sorts.

That's 20 minutes of NOT sitting on the couch :thumbsup2

I really appreciate all your supportive comments :goodvibes Every source of motivation helps!

I'm here! Just a little late to the party.

I just started the Couch to 5k program myself. I'm halfway into week 2, so I'm not too far along, but I love your progress reports, so I might have to do something like that on my PTR to keep me motivated. :thumbsup2

That's amazing you have run for 25 minutes. I know exactly what you mean about the accomplishment, because I'm in the phase where running for a short period of time is hard. But I make it through.

:wave2: Welcome Danielle - glad to have you aboard!

I think I read something on one of your TRs about doing the C25K. I've found it a great way to get started :thumbsup2 I just hope my legs and ankles hold out for the whole program - it's starting to get tough on them now!

I'd love to read all about your progress, so let me know if you do start writing it down anywhere. I'll be more than happy to cheer you on :cheer2:

i had to substitute the 10 minute run with a 30 minute bike ride instead.

So unfortunately I've hit a bit of a snag with my training... My left ankle just isn't feeling better after the fun run, and as much as it pains me to abandon my schedule, I don't want to run on it until I've had it checked out. I have an appointment with the physio tomorrow, so fingers crossed!

In the meantime, I thought I would do very broad overview of what the actual trip might entail...

First things first, I'm working on the assumption that the TOT 10 miler will be on at the same time of year in 2014 ie last weekend in September. Also, I will have to be back in time to go to a wedding on the other side of the country in mid-October, so it only gives me about 2 weeks to play with, which realistically is all I'll be able to afford anyway! I'm also still assuming that my mum (and possibly both parents) will be joining me, but DH won't.

My parents will no doubt meet me in Melbourne on the way through, since I don't believe there are any direct flights to the US from Perth. They may stay overnight, in which case I might go into the city a day early and we can all stay there overnight - no point having them make the trek all the way to my place just for 1 night.

We'll probably get the most direct flights we can from Melbourne to Orlando, and aim to arrive on the Wednesday or Thursday before the run. We'll want to give ourselves enough time to acclimatise, but not so much time that we'll be tempted to spend too much time in the parks wearing ourselves out! I'd like to stay at POR, and I think my parents would like it there too.

The few days before the race we will probably not spend too much time in the parks. The main things for us will be keeping to our training regime, eating plan, and keeping as well rested as we can before the run, so I won't book anything in, and we'll just do whatever fits around our run schedule. One of these days will be picking up our race packets and checking out the expo, where we will no doubt spend far too much money on stuff you can't get in Aus!

Race day we might do something leisurely in the morning, and I will probably have a nap in the afternoon. I am not a night person and usually get tired early, which is not very helpful for a run that doesn't start until 9:30pm! We will no doubt have a light, early dinner and then probably make our way to the general area of the event to give ourselves plenty of time.

After the run... well, that's when we'll hit WDW properly! It really is far too early to make specific plans just yet, but I hope to hit each park at least once, and do some resort hopping! I'd also like to get to Universal, especially IOA.

Since it's Halloween time, I WILL be going to a MNSSHP! Since we don't really do Halloween in Aus, it will be a bit of a novelty to be able to really get involved!

On the way home, since we will likely go through LA anyway, I would like to spend at least 2 nights at DLR, go to one of their Halloween parties, and check out Haunted Mansion Holiday, and Carsland! I may be doing this part solo as my parents will be able to spend more time in the US since they won't be going to the wedding.

And speaking of Halloween, I will be taking 3 costumes... a running costume, and one each for the Halloween party on both coasts! Some costume ideas I have are Ursula (for the run), Cheshire Cat (saw some awesome material today!), Jessica Rabbit, Sally (as in Nightmare Before Christmas), and goth Tinker Bell. Yes, I love wearing costumes, and no, I don't have much opportunity to wear them at home :lmao:

Sounds like great plans and costumes.

Just remember - it will be warm in Orlando; so whatever costume you decide on.....keep it light.

Feeling a bit frustrated this week! Turns out I was right not wanting to keep running on my ankle. Went to the physio on Thursday and she said my ankle joint is definitely not happy. She strapped it up for me, told me to take some anti-inflammatories, rest it as much as I can, and ice it at the end of the day. Oh, she wrote a letter to my boss too explaining that she wants me to wear my runners to work :lmao:

We didn't really go through how/when I'm going to be able to start training again. To start with she really just wanted me to get the inflammation under control. I have another appointment on Monday so maybe we'll be able to discuss some strategies then.

I'm feeling a little disheartened being so close to the end of the program and not being able to finish it :furious: But at least I've left myself plenty of time for training so it won't impact the actual run :rotfl: And it cheers me up thinking of how far I've come, and that I actually managed to run 4k, which I never ever thought I'd be able to do :thumbsup2

The bank account has also taken a hit this week as I forgot to take in a plate for a birthday morning tea at work, so I was forced to buy some muffins from the canteen. Also with Christmas and DH's birthday coming up, I'm not expecting to be able to save as much as I have been :(

Still staying positive though. These are just minor setbacks in the scheme of things.

My ankle is finally getting better :woohoo: And I have been given the go-ahead to ease back into running when I have the right shoes. Apparently my feet are slightly flat and need more arch support than my current runners are giving me. This is very frustrating since (and you may remember me mentioning this) I specifically went to one of those places where they fit you for shoes for injury prevention... Apparently all the staff there are supposed to be podiatrists specialising in sports medicine, and yet they were unable to see what my physio suspected within 5 minutes. If there are any Melbournites wanting to know which shop to avoid, please PM me.

I'm not sure how long it will take me to sort out the shoes. I can't afford to buy a new pair, so I'm going to have to rely on the shoe shop replacing them for me (which I feel they should be willing to do given the circumstances). My physio is also going to write them a letter explaining exactly what sort of shoe I need, so I have to wait for her to do that too.

In the meantime, I'm going to do some bike-riding. Unfortunately my area isn't very bike friendly (for beginners anyway - experienced riders come up here to train all the time!), so yesterday DH and I took the bikes to the Warburton Trail. This is an old rail trail that they have converted into a path for pedestrians, bikes and horses, and passes through some beautiful scenery in the Yarra Valley.

Yesterday we rode from Seville Station to Woori Yallock Station, which was about 7km each way. Because it used to be a railway line, there are no steep gradients, which is great for a beginner like me! On the way back there were a couple of small uphill gradients, which was still hard for me not being 'bike fit', but I just took it slow and steady and managed to reach the top without having to stop for a break (and I didn't even go into the lowest gear either!).

I might start taking my bike to work with me as there is a bike path not far from there. Then I can just do a half an hour ride on the way home, which will hopefully help keep up my fitness until I can start running again. And when I'm a little more 'bike fit', I can start riding around my local area!

On the savings front, I've taken a bit of a hit this week. I had lunch out with a friend from work on Friday, but that was less than $10, so not too bad. And the other thing I spent on this week was material for a cheshire cat costume :rotfl: I saw it at Spotlight when I was there looking at blinds, and just couldn't go past it (especially since it was on special for half price). The picture doesn't do it justice - it's neon pink and purple with tiger stripes :goodvibes

I have the same issue about running, which is why I get on my bike instead. Sorry that the shoe place didn't get things right for you. Glad you're getting better. :flower3:

It's just a shame there's no Disney cycling events (and even if there were it would be pretty hard to go if it meant taking your bike, helmet etc on the plane and lugging it around WDW)! I'm so desperate for my RunDisney medal I'll get through it somehow, but if my legs don't really ever get used to it I'll stop after that.

I'm glad to hear that your ankle is feeling better, but that really stinks that you were given an improper recommendation on shoes! That's just horrible. I know what you mean, proper running shoes are so expensive.

Isn't it crazy that you can be a runner and not be "bike fit?" Our bodies are just crazy.

That material is insanely cool!

I may have nearly crashed into a post... :lmao: I haven't ridden a bike much since I was a kid, like maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years. It's true - you never forget how to do it, but it certainly takes a bit of practice to get comfortable on it again!

On my third visit to the sports shoe shop, I finally managed to get someone to actually listen to my concerns (although I did have the letter from the physio to back me up). Half an hour and $70 later, I came out with a new pair of shoes that should offer the right support. They did allow me to return the old pair, but the new ones were (of course) more expensive, so I still had to pay the difference.

So now I can start my training again! :yay:

I'm going to start the C25K program right from the start, and I am tempted to do each week twice (since I'm really in no hurry). I really want to build a good solid foundation for myself. So I also plan to do some strength training on my off days.

Hopefully this time it will all go smoothly, but at least I'll know what to look out for and go straight back to the physio if I feel the same sort of pain again.

As far as budget goes, after my end of month transfer for October, I've managed to crack $500 :dance3:

Well done on the athlete's shoe return and purchase; and well done of the savings front. Both are great efforts.

My thoughts are with everyone on the east coast (in the US I mean). Been keeping up with all the latest news and it looks very scary :scared1: Hope everyone is ok.

Hi Peoples! I keep forgetting to pop in and update, lots happening, of course I'm up to date with Zanzibar's situation, (being as I'm her Mum).

I successfully reached the end of C25K on Sunday, and boy it was a tough gig getting through that last run. It warmed up really quickly in Perth and I'd slept in and not began my run til after 8am. It was really hot and humid, no shade, got up to 36 before the change and storm set in. I don't think it got to 36 while I was running as it was only half an hour run but it sure felt like it. I can hardly believe the 9 weeks of the program went so quickly.

I have now found and began training on a 10K program. I did the 2nd run tonight after work, (usually run Tues/Thurs am before work but changed plans tonight). I'm pretty happy with how I'm going, just have to nurse the legs along here and there but so far so good. This program is 8 weeks long so should have me finishing around Xmas time.

Nice to see/read of other's progress and news, keep it up, it's very inspiring and motivating to see how you're all going.

Happy Training everyone, and I'll touch base again soon. :cheer2:

Thanks for stopping by again Mum :goodvibes

Looking forward to hearing about how you go with your 10k program.
