Running Down a Dream 2: It's All About the Swag

Hey Scott!

Have a GREAT trip! It'll be a nice change of scenery for you to run up here in the North. :goodvibes You're not going to be near AC, are you? :confused3

Congrats on getting your packet too! :thumbsup2 I remember how exciting that was last year for you guys.

Take care, and enjoy your "pull back" week.

Hi Scotty! Just checking in to see how trip / weekend was. Hope you had a good one!

Stacie

 hello everyone

...back from the trip....

Full report tomorrow, but I wanted to post that the 6 mile run yesterday was the best non-race run I have ever had. I have to admit that i really like running in the mid 20 degree temps (as long as the wind doesn't blow)....

Glad you had such success on your run! You must be thrilled!!! :dance3:

Ok, so let's recap the long weekend that was.

Wednesday - Made it to the fitness center for 30 minutes on the elliptical before getting to bed earlier than normal due to an eeeaaarrrllyy flight out of Atlanta.

Thursday - Departed the house slightly after 4am and was leaving the city via the airways by 7ish. I actually took an hour long pilates class (not a dvd, a real class!) that evening and followed it up with a 4.5 mile run on the treadmill. I still believe that pilates is the best thing you can do for your core (or powerhouse if you will)...but you really have to pay attention and do each exercise properly. Each individual exercise engages all or part of your core, challenging it in a fun/non-repetitive way. Beats the heck out of doing a million crunches and seeing no results :)

Friday - Didn't have time to do any real XT, so I opted for a couple rum and cokes at a local sports bar instead ;)

Saturday - Did a 7 mile walk in some seriously cold & windy conditions. Cold enough in fact that I had to break down and buy one of those running skull caps to keep the ears from falling off of my head. No fun when you start to loose feeling in the lower part of your jaw with no real way to get it warmed back up. So what did I do after being so darn cold all morning?? Why, I went and worked out of course! 30 minutes on the elliptical at a Gold's Gym. I followed that up with a few glasses of French and California white wines ;) (in serious marathon training after all!)

Sunday - Got out there in the cold for an awesome 6 mile run. It was just beautiful and almost surreal. The wind was non existent and running along with nice scenery around was a huge bonus. It was one of those times I thought I could literally run forever.

Monday - Travel day so unfortunately I did not get any workouts in...of course, Monday's are supposed to be rest days anyway.

Today - Ran in my normal 'hood tonight before dinner. I did 6.2 miles. I felt pretty good out there. Something about running among all the homes lit up with Christmas lights brought back memories of last year....knowing that training was winding down...and in just a few weeks I'd be putting my body through an extreme test of willpower and endurance. Tonight the smell of smoke from fireplaces made me feel good about myself. I imagined people all bundled up on their couches, eating away while watching television...gathering warmth from the fire to heat their sedentary souls. Yet I was out there sweating, trying to get and keep myself into a healthy person. Two years ago I would have been bundled up with a big bowl of ice cream or nachos & cheese, never dreaming of working out. I don't mean to come across mean or rude...it's just a place that I have been and don't ever want to go back. And to see people on these boards, all coming together to get & stay healthy in their own ways is a very inspiring thing. We all deserve a pat on the back for starting, journeying along and/or completing our goals. :goodvibes:

So there you go....an update from my world. The rest of the week will be: Wed - elliptical, Thurs- 5 mile run, Fri - elliptical, Sat - 8 mile walk/run, Sun - 16 mile long run.

I hope everyone has a great night!

:goodvibes Great post Scott! I swear I was thinking something similar running out in the wind and cold today...smelling the fire places and not seeing another soul walking, running or otherwise. Made me feel good and strong :).

And wow...I'm SOOO glad you bought that hat! You'd look funny without any ears ;).

Sounds like you had a great weekend. And I had NO IDEA that hydrating with wine and rum was part of our marathon plan. *scratches head* :confused3 Maybe I need to give it a try :rotfl: .

Honestly...you are doing GREAT!!!

Scott, congrats on your super busy week! I give you guys credit for running outside in the cold -- i can't bring myself to do it..yet. ;) I just hate it. Keep up the awesome work!!

Glad to hear your training is going well and you are staying healthy! Only 5 more weeks to go!!! I can't wait to see how well you do!

So today, I had Subway for lunch and I thought about you there Speedy McSandwich! lol! :goodvibes

Happy training this week!

So I am brand new to this working out in the cold, but I can SO totally relate to what you are saying after my ONE workout this morning!:lmao: It does feel pretty good to know that the days of taking the easy way out are gone in favor of a lifestyle that actually promotes good health instead of a heart attack waiting to happen.

SO AWESOME to hear about your great runs. I am SO GLAD that your training is going well and I LOVE reading about it. Keep up the great work - you're inspiring all of us out here!!:woohoo:

Hi Scott,
Glad the trip went well.I also love the 20-30 degree running-not as much as spring, but as long as the wind does not blow I am OK.

I always love to read your posts because they are philosophical at times.Uplifting if you get what I mean.

I need to get a pilates DVD, I won't go to a gym, been that route and I do better on my own they having to be somewhere to work out at a certain time.I need core work and crunches just are not calling me.

Have a great week,
Linda

Hi Scott...

Hope you are having a good weekend :). How is training going? Unfortunately I had to skip my 8 mile walk/run b/c I've been sick this weekend. I still hope to get the 16 in the books tomorrow. *fingers crossed*

Good luck tomorrow on your 16 Mile LR. I'm sure you'll do awesome!!!

Hey Scott--Glad to hear the training is going well! And to hear that you like running in the COLD! YIKES!! I hate it, and the winter seems so long up here in NJ. Glad you bought the hat, that is a necessity up here.

Sounds like another solid week of training for you, and you even included rum and cokes and wine...I think I forgot that part of my training plan...:rotfl2:

Keep up the good work!

Hey Scotty! Just checking in to see how your week/ weekend has been and how your LR went...

Hope all is well in your part of the world!

Stacie

 I know this training is getting tough. How are you doing today??? Hang in there buddy. And remember...

ONLY ONE MORE LR TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cool1::yay:  :cool1: :yay:

Thanks everyone :goodvibes:

So yesterday's run totally kicked my donkey (sorry, been watching too much "chef"). It's funny because when it comes to most of the things in my life, I have a ton of self doubt...not much confidence...and sometimes opt for not doing something as opposed to failing at it. Running has been diffferent for me. I suppose it is because it's been one accomplishment right after another, all giving me a lot of confidence in myself and my abilities. But yesterday I questioned everything out there on that trail.

The first 8 started off awesome. I felt strong, had some new music going and was very relaxed...my usual long running self. Something happend shortly after that though and I hit a total wall. I lost all focus, my legs did not want to go any further and I questioned everything from why I was out there at that moment to why I run in the first place. I opted to mainly walk most of the remaining miles back to my car, throwing in a few jogs when I could. I really don't remember feeling that bad during a run ever.

Afterwards I was pretty achey and had salt everywhere on my skin. I guzzled down a recovery shake and stopped for some food...but I couldn't really eat the food and was just feeling like doo doo.

I reflected back to last year when I thought about every run over 14 being identical....just invitations for injury...if you can run 14, you can run a full. I think that's what made things so hard on the trail...I knew that I'd put the 16 in without fanfare..get back in the car and have to do it all again next week...the week after....the week after...I'm just not sure how much good these super long runs are doing me. I think they are largely confidence builders (that's ironic) and maybe not even necessary in the grand scheme of things? Sure, you need a good base before you can complete a marathon but I don't think you necessarily need to do those long runs. Sure, I'm not a doctor but I see so many people dealing with injuries and pain after these types of runs and I'm sure they can complete the marathon just fine without them. I guess that's just the thought process after stinking it up on a long run :rotfl:

Now I did go out there and walk 8 miles on Saturday and I'm not sure how much impact that had on this run. Hopefully that wasn't the reason for the difficulties or I'll be in big trouble come January 14th LOL

Anyway, it was just a discouraging run overall.

Luckily I'm feeling better today and back to being ready to run tomorrow. I'm still undecided about the 18 miler. I'm just not sure that I need to do a 9 mile walk and then an 18 mile run back to back. I guess I have 2 weeks to make that decision :)

This week is a step back week...off today, 5 on Tues, 40 elliptical on Wed, 5 on Thurs, 30 elliptical on Fri, 4 mile walk on Sat and 8 mile run on Sunday....all in addition to 4-5 solid pilates workouts.

Soooo....yes, Amy.....THANK GOODNESS THERE IS ONLY ONE MORE LR TO GO!! Yes!!! I'm looking forward to some easier runs the next two weeks and at this point that 3 week taper is sounding so appealing :) Can't believe we're almost back to WDW...has it really been a year?? :goodvibes:

Good karma came today in the mail...I received my 26.2 Rockin' Miles Medal for completing the Country Music Half and the San Jose Half....(Amy, did you get yours yet?)...I love how the Elite series events are all tied together with special additional medals for completing increased amounts of events within one year....Amy, are you ready to claim them all in '09?? ;)

So that's it for now...off to go Fingerjig, Google just exactly how surveying equipment works, ponder the reasoning for increased McDonalds pricing on the Massachussetts Turnpike (and less than the already low standard golden arches food quality...what exactly did i eat there?), peruse the net for the latest drunken rice beer elephant story and post a blog about the donut selection at Dunkin' Donuts (WHAT, no vanilla iced?? only on the gingerbread cake one? And where the heck did the gingerbread cake one come from anyway? Furthermore, no 2% milk?) What is this world coming to anyway??

(I know...it didn't make sense...but there is a reason for everything dear readers)

Hope everyone has a great week, suntanning in Georgia or Ice Fishing in the NE :)

Hey there Scott. So sorry to hear about your bummer run! You don't seem like the self-doubter type to me, but I totally understand where you're coming from. You do seem very confident in your running and that is really they only part of you life we know so I'll take you're word for it. ;)

I know you are very discouraged and you said every run after 14 miles is the same w/ no fanfare. For many of us reading your journal, we are in awe of the LRs. 14, 16, 18, whatever. Even if they are the same to you, to US (and you realize this not all about you right! lol! ) it's very encouraging to see what you do. You are good at this. It proves you are a strong person physically and mentally to be able to complete and attain the goals you have set for yourself.

In the end, you have to do what's best for you. Train in a way that's best for you. No matter what you decide for your next LR, I know you'll be awesome for Goofy!

So, as I posted in Laurie's journal, I'm thinking maybe we could meet for lunch at a counter service place or something on Friday or before the WISH meet like Laurie mentioned. What do you think? We're flexible. You guys are the one running all those miles! ;)

Glad you're feeling better today! Hope you have a good one! Remember... Just by being you and sharing your journey with us, you are very inspring and very encouraging. Thanks for much for taking an interest and continuing to check in on me! :flower3:

Stacie

Well said Stacie :thumbsup2 . Scott you have inspired me since day one. And it bears repeating to say that I would not have finished the marathon last year without you by my side. So...it's not all about you  . You're the best buddy....and we all have bad runs...it's how you recover and get back out there that counts. I know you...and I know you'll be out there pounding the pavement like a champ!!!

Besides, I honestly think there is something about the 16 miles that is just cursed lol. I had a rough one too and I'm darn glad it's over. Maybe it's that post 14 mile distance that just totally $ucks. Soooo...18 may be rough too...let's just get through it and move onward to the races. Those medals will have come with a lot of sweat....but won't we be proud wearing them around on Sunday night!!! :goodvibes

I think it's wise to reconsider the 9/18 weekend. I'm not sure it's good for me either as my legs are still unhappy!!!! But I have to say there is some part of me that wants to prep my legs for that "feeling" of running long after walking so many miles the day before. I didn't get that experience this weekend and it makes me kind of nervous. :confused3

Thanks as always for posting your thoughts with such sincerity and humility. It helps to see that we're all human here...and we all have good days and bad days. We all have challenges and demons to overcome. I'm lucky to have you to run with in January. :)

Hi, Scott. I am sorry you had a rough time with your LR (see, I'm picking up the abbreviations already!!), but I just have to chime in here and say:

YOU SO TOTALLY ROCK AT THIS!!! You have NO idea how much of an inspiration you have been to me personally (and to lots of others here, I'm sure). I continue to be in awe of how much work you put into the training and how many miles you log getting ready for the Goofy is ASTOUNDING!!! I am just amazed that people like you and Amy, who are running marathons on a regular basis, take such a keen personal interest in people like me, who can't run more than a few blocks without collapsing from the strain. AMAZED, I tell you. And folks like you are helping to save folks like me from ourselves - inspiring us to do this even when it's tough, even when the workout is difficult, even when we'd rather be relaxing and eating junk. So, at the risk of repeating what the other ladies have already said, IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT YOU - there are MANY of us who look to you for the great example you provide to help us keep going.

Whew, that was a lot longer than I intended it to be, but what the heck? I think maybe it was time I said it.

Hope today is a better day - keep on keeping on!

Susan

Scott,
I cannot stress enough how often I hear your words as I am out there. Your posts totally keep me going and focused.Everyone has a bad day once in a while whether it is during a 2 mile run or a 16 mile run- we feel like machines sometimes but we have to realize we really aren't.Many factors go into the body fuctioning to it's limits all the time.

As you have told all of us at one time or another-keep your head, up this will pass and you will succeed.

I can't wait to hear from you guys after the Goofy to hear how you did.

Have a good one
Linda
