I've been giving some serious though to running a cattery at home. We have the space and I have the time (DS & DD's autism means it's not practical for me to work outside the home) I would only start small with about 6 units and I'm fairly confident that could get the clients. I just wonder if anyone in Dis land has any experience of this and could give me some advice.

Can't help but suggest that you contact your RSPCA and local council who may have guidance on the various regulations to be aware of :)

No advice I'm afraid, but it sounds like a good idea if it fits in with your lifestyle - and you like cats of course :rotfl:

My sister recently had to put her cat into a cattery for 2 weeks and she was pleased that the cattery owner 'collects' and then 'delivers' the cat, she said it made it less sad to leave him

We are in Ireland so don't have an RSPCA but I do have some animal society's here to contact. I just wondered if anyone had any direct experience or tips :thumbsup2

Ive never worked in one but I know that when I book my dog into kennels its nice when the owners are caring, I hate leaving him and I always feel better if I can see that the person genuinely loves animals.

No advice ~ Just hope everything goes well :goodvibes

No real advice, but definitely go with the Animal Board thingy. You never know about some legislation you might have to put up with.

Not that this helps, but I read in a book that if you wanted to keep chickens in an apartment complex (no idea why you'd want to though... :confused3 ) you definitely need an inspector to check in and see if it's OK ~ see what I mean here?

Sorry no advice on the running etc, but I know it is always easier to leave a pet with someone who genuinely cares for animals and offers the comforts of home, in terms of favourite food, bedding etc.

Wishing you lots of luck.

Sara. :)

i agree.. as an owner I need someone to humour me... and love my pet.

We used to drive for an hour to get our cat to a place that made us feel ok...

Oooh, I know you will be very much appreciated, and that you will never be short of clients, but please expect to be indispensable :confused3

I had an animal mad cousin who opened a kennels several years ago, only to realise that she never had a moment to herself or to be with her husband for that matter! :sad2: )

They thoroughly enjoyed their time owning kennels but are even more happy and content now that they have found a buyer to relieve them of their responsibilities :sunny:

That's why I plan to keep it small at this stage

Thanks to everyone else who replied - and if I ever want to keep chickens in an apartment complex I'll know that I need an inspector :rotfl2:

good luck!

Hope it works out well for you!

:thumbsup2

Good luck with your new venture. I take mine to a wonderful cattery. The lady who runs it keeps a file on every cat she takes in, so she knows its likes, dislikes, the vet, emergency contact numbers, illnesses, vaccination records, etc., etc. She also has an old, large wash house at the back of her property which she has coverted into a play area for cats. As she is cleaning out each pen, she takes the cats from there and puts them in the play area, so they can run around, climb around the tree she has in there (not a real one, but very realistic) and generally get some good exercise every day. I am secretly hoping that this wonderful woman lives for ever so I never have to find another cattery!

All I know is that it costs a bleeding fortune to put our two in a cattery.

I always say it would be cheaper just to buy two new cats when we get back!!! :thumbsup2

All the best with the plans!!

Too true it cost us over €400 for the month this year :confused3

I'll do you a deal if you bring them to me :thumbsup2
