Runners UNITE! We've graduated C25K, so let's keep on going!

Hey girls. Just a quick post from DC (I'm on work travel). I hit the TM last night and ran 2 miles. I really, really, really didn't want to. I had stuffed myself silly at an awesome restaurant...but my co-worker said she was going to the fitness center, so I would have felt horrible if I didn't go too. (guilt is a baaaaaaaaaaad thing).

Anyway...Corinna - you're kicking my butt on the mileage challenge. You're gonna blow way past the 35 miles. :cheer2:

Kat - I hope you're feeling better. Don't bash yourself for not running when you're sick. Great job hitting the gym with the trainer (and your assistant :upsidedow ). I bet you'll do much better in the 13k than you think. :thumbsup2

Good to hear from you, Kim! I'm not kicking anyone's butt except my own, and I didn't even do that yesterday or today. I am all thrown off by preschool, apparently. I agree, running on a full stomach is not that fun, and guilt isn't the best motivator, but it's good you got those two miles in, even so!

I do hope to finish the mileage challenge early - these longer runs make it jump kind of alarmingly fast. Still, they say that "slow and steady wins the race."

Ok, Corinna - you motivated me to get back on that evil TM again tonight. I fully planned on just walking...but for some reason it's harder than running. I ended up walking for a while, then ran for a total of 3 miles. Yeah, my feet are hurtin' tonight. Time for some new sneakers when I get home. I think I've needed them for about a month now. :headache: I also did some arm weights and squats tonight.

Big Brother's over, so I think I'm gonna try to get some sleep.

Who would have thought I'd get BORED having so much time to myself. :confused3 (not that I'm complaining)

It IS harder to walk on a treadmill than to run! I totally agree. I hate that fast-walk stuff on the treadmill. It seems so counter-intuitive that running would be easier than walking, though.

Way to go, making good use of that time and TM access. I am very impressed. For myself, no running today either. Then this evening, my 4 year old was doing some crazy super hero thing and slammed his skull into my back. I feel all wonky. I have him all day tomorrow, as well. I may just have to go with a run on Thursday, or maybe I can send him with his dad in the morning...you are putting me to shame!

It's so funny how we used to have time like that all the time before kids, isn't it? How did we ever fill the days?

Boy, at the risk of dominating the conversation.....I had a little revelation while running today. I had forgotten my ipod at home and so the thoughts in my brain were a little more prominent today, I guess.

I realized that if I run a 7 mile run this weekend and can run 8 miles by the end of October, that puts me just 2 miles short of the 10 mile race I couldn't fathom running this past July. There was a 3 mile and a 10 mile and I literally laughed at the idea of my running the 10 mile. I'm not that far away from that being a real possibility.

Also, talking to DH later, I told him how I had gone 4.25 miles and had meant to go 4. He said something about it being "chump change" to me at this point. And I had to agree that .25 does seem to be "chump change" now, though I allowed as how anything over 4 is a significant run. It should probably be 3, but I am now officislly "that crazy."

And then I realized that if I can do 10 miles in July, the half marathon in 2009 is not actually that big a leap. And now that I type this up, I feel like I am pre-counting my chickens, but it is amazing to think that these little leapfrogs up are adding up to really challenging-sounding races! :scared1: :cool1:

OK, Corinna. Seriously. Stop running. You're BLOWING me away! :guilty:

I'm just kidding. :goodvibes

You know, I say (a lot) how I know you can do it. But I am completely serious. You have the power in you to run a race like that & kick some butt! I read that marathons for mortals book & in it...the people training for marathons NEVER run 26 miles before the marathon. In fact, they run I think 22 or 23 miles like 3 weeks before the race, then they taper back & run less the weeks right before the race. I think if you run an 8 miler late September, you will totally ROCK the 13k. :woohoo: :woohoo: (sorry if I misquoted the book, it's been a while...but I remember the concept)

You are in such a running zone....I mean, think back to 6 months ago or a year ago. Running 3 miles is chump change?? Like Kat said, even if you need a walk break, you can still run that last mile or last 1/4 mile and I don't think you would feel any less joy/pride/emotion than if you ran the whole thing - you know?

ugh. I'm so proud of you, I don't know what else to say.

Hi!

Sorry haven't been on much. DH landed a new job out of state, so guess who has been starting the relocation process?

Anyway, I finished the Lewis & Clark Half Marathon in St. Charles, MO today! :) As a fledgling runner who has posted some pretty snail like paces this summer, I was hoping to be around 3.5 hours. Clearly I was going to be walking a fair portion of this and running slowly to boot to avoid any overuse injury. Struggling with the heat here has been absolutely awful this summer. The area officially posted their third hottest summer on record. But, today was cloudy and cool! I basically tore up on the flat course. I almost started crying in pure joy a few times at how well-prepared my body was. I purposely walked the first mile as it was a throng of people and I didn't want to get caught in the excitement and pay the price later. This strategy worked for me. I passed people from mile 2 onward and I finally caught up to 'my group' around mile 9. I didn't start feeling tired until mile 11. But when I heard, ''under 3", 2 more minutes to get officially under 3" believe me I took off!! So I beat my goal by at least a half hour.

So now I am waiting to recover, so I can go running around Wilderness Lodge in WDW next week! :)

Colleen! That is so amazing! I can't believe you did 13 miles - SO impressed. It is great that the weather worked out so well for you. Thank goodness!

Nothing from me this weekend - Friday night, I seem to have unwittingly pulled a muscle in the back of my leg - yes, perhaps the same one I pulled in May. I didn't even do anything weird that I can remember. Anyhow, it's settling down, so hopefully I'll be back on track soon.

Meeting with a personal trainer tomorrow - I hope my arms will someday look as good as my legs do now!

Oh, and have fun running around the WL - and maybe Ft. Wilderness as well! What a great thing to look forward to!

Colleen, how amazing!!! Our first 1/2 marathon graduate! :) Congrats! I'm glad the weather worked out for you. Under three hours rocks! I still can't imagine running/walking for three hours. Enjoy the WL!

I ran at the hotel gym in Portland this weekend, three miles; and we walked around Portland, probably over three miles each day. I only let my friend take the train once, and only because her son really wanted to go on it. (And then of course he had to pee, so we had to get off!)

AWESOME job, Colleen!!! :worship: That is sooooo great!!! I'm in awe of you, girl! :thumbsup2 Have a GREAT WDW trip!

Kat - great job getting on that dreaded TM! Plus doing all of that walking. You put in some serious miles, lady! :goodvibes

Corinna - keep on rockin' it girl. You're mileage counter just keeps going up & up!

As for me, I'm pluggin' along. I ran 3 miles in the rain on Saturday and then took a 3 mile brisk walk on my lunch break today. :thumbsup2 I'm loving these cooler temps right now.

Keep on keepin' on girls.

Argh! Russ has been doing so well in the kids play area at the gym, so we went this morning, and he had a massive meltdown before I even got in a mile. Not even the promise of a treat (yes, I bribe my child) could get him to stay in the kids area. So frustrating! Tomorrow I'm going with a friend so hopefully the boys will keep each other entertained.

Kim, you've been on Kingda Ka?? My sister and I were in GA right after it opened and there was no way I was waiting on the three-hour line...right, that's my excuse. ;)

Sorry about Russ. And I'm a briber too. :goodvibes My kids wouldn't go on 1/2 the rides that they now LOVE if it wasn't for me bribing them to go on in the first place.

Kingda Ka - yup, been on it twice now. But I've honestly never "seen" it in action. I closed my eyes SO tight both times. :rotfl: It goes so fast it actually HURTS your face. Last year we waited one hour, and the other day we waited 1/2 hour. Both times it was the last ride of the night. You GOTTA try it!:thumbsup2

Hey ladies (cue the Beastie Boys). :goodvibes

Finally got a run in today. I did walk some of it, but I ran more than I walked. :thumbsup2 And I completed 4.6 miles in 62 minutes. So not too bad. I'm completely wiped out right now though. I think it's b/c I ran at 11am and it was crazy hot out today. Oh, and I usually drink a propel or something like that after my run, and we're all out. So I'm just drinking water and I probably need something else with vitamins in it after that run. I swear I was sweating buckets. ewwwwwwwwwww :headache:

But, I got the miles in, and I'm that much closer to my goal. Hopefully the temps taper off a little and I can get some extra walks in at lunch, and maybe a run or two. :thumbsup2

Hope you're having a great weekend, girls.:thumbsup2

Phewf, as my son would say. I didn't anticipate cutting the mileage challenge so close. I finished today, but that pulled hammie was a bit of a set back for sure.

Today, my 8 year old insisted on running outside with me. It had been really raining, but by the time we got out there, it was Kim's favorite plus a really out of hand gale. It was windy and my son's ears ended up being the limiting factor. He did great, though. We covered about 2 miles together. I came back and put in another 3 on the treadmill, which pushes me over the challenge.

What's up for next month, Kim? I have got to get up closer to running 8.1 miles....I feel like I've slipped behind on that.

I am new to this running thing. Only in my second week of the C25K plan (hope you don't mind my posting here, but no one is posting on the c25k original thread). I am looking for feedback. I did my first 5k today. :cool1: My unofficial time was 36 minutes. I ran more than I walked today. I had a friend "coaching" me along the way. Is that a reasonable time for a beginner? I plan to keep up my training for the BIG 5k in AK in Jan. I just wanted some feedback from some experienced runners.

I hope you don't mind me posting this here, since I haven't completed my c25k yet. ;)

Hi aldisneygirl! I think I speak for the assembly when I say that you are absolutely welcome to come over here - and hey - you finished a 5K! :cool1: That is fantastic!

As for your time, I can tell you that it is just a really individual thing and don't spend too much time worrying about it at this stage. Lots of things factor into your speed: temperature the day of the run, how hilly the course is and extra body weight you might or might not be carrying.

I can also tell you that I ran my first 5K (jogged the whole thing!) in 38 minutes, so your 36 minute mostly walking 5K sounds really impressive to me! I have gotten a little faster, but not a lot faster, and that's OK with me.

Did you have a good time at the race? Are you planning to do another one? It will be fun for you to see how much your time changes by the time of your next race. Incidentally, a 5K in Alaska in January? Sounds hard core!!! :)

I ran about 80% of the race today, thanks to my friend/coach/cheerleader. I just want to have a time of less than 45 minutes, since that is what Disney requires of the Fun Run.

Ok, that would be hard core if it was Alaska. ;) AK stands for the Disney run in Animal Kingdom, not Alaska. :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao: Hope you find that funny too! Sorry this Southern Belle would never be running in Alaska! :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Let me just say that running today was a lot harder than it is in my neighborhood. There were some pretty steep hills, and I have about 15 more pounds to lose. I am conquering that with WW, and should have it off by Thanksgiving.

I have some friends that say they do a Halloween 5k, so that may be my next one. It was a very nice morning down here in AL.

Thanks for making me feel welcome, and your feedback. I still think it is hilarious that you thought I was running in Alaska! :scared1: :rotfl: :cold:

OK - that IS funny! I could enjoy a 5K through Animal Kingdom in January. Alaska in January.....well, all I can say is that sometimes people jump in frozen over lakes and stuff, so who knows what extreme things are out there. :) You are sure to have a good time in Animal Kingdom, though, and 45 minutes as a time limit seems to allow for a good deal of walking.

The hills make SUCH a huge difference - my neighborhood is ALL hills. This summer, I ran in a flat area a lot, but around here, it's pretty much impossible. I'm either running up or down hill about 85% of the time. That is great that you were able to run so much of the race with the hills and all!

OK - it was silly of me to think they'd have a 5K in Alaska in January. I don't know what the odds are that any given day in Alaska in January would be a viable race day, but it doesn't seem like the sort of thing that race organizers would be keen to gamble on, does it? :rotfl:

I am glad you found the humor in it too! I was afraid you might think that I was trying to be a smart aleck! :confused3

I am also doing the 5k with my daughter who will be 9 1/2, so I will probably be going slower to help her keep the pace. I have read on several threads that people who did it last year didn't see anybody get "swept", so I am hoping that is true for '08, but we will be ready regardless. ;)
