Runners UNITE! We've graduated C25K, so let's keep on going!

So DH arrived safely, as did his laptop. Still no photos, though, because somebody forgot to pack the photo-cable-thingy. I have to go shopping today, though, so that is on the list of things to try to buy. I am taking the weekends off now - no recreation program for the kiddies on the weekend. I was exhausted this week, though, with my upped mileage, and ended up taking a couple of naps. :rolleyes1

Way to get back to it, Contemp! It's always a little rough the first time back after a hiatus. I think you're right - the base you built is still there, and you will be back in full swing before you know it.

My word, it is good to have a computer here again!

I don't think I need to start the C25K again, I'll just try to eliminate that break and increase my distance.

Welcome back!! I too haven't run in a while, and went for my first one today...in the 90 degree heat. :headache: Not the smartest move, but I'm glad I can say I've run again. :goodvibes I agree that you don't need to do the C25K program again, just start out slow and short and build yourself back up as based on how you feel. :thumbsup2

Corinna - welcome back to computer-dom. That was a LOT of running and walking this week, girl. Try not to push it too hard in the heat. And save some time to have FUN while on vacation. :rotfl:

Like I said above, I did get out for a run today. I went 3.07 miles in 38.50 minutes. Slow pace, but my LORD was it HOT! :guilty: I felt like I was breathing in stuffy, steamy air...nothing regenerating about it. It was an ugly run and a hard run, but it was a run. :thumbsup2

Keep up the great work, ladies!!! I'm so glad to have you all in this journey.

Ugh, I can't believe you ran in the heat!! My rule is if it's over 75 degrees, all running is done inside. I had to run at 6:30 am on the Fourth to beat the heat - it was already 77 degrees by the time I got back. I'm just plodding away at the One Hour Runner - up to 41 minutes on my long run yesterday. I was GROUCHY about it, though; I just had no desire to do it yesterday so my time was way slower than normal.

Way to go for beating your time, Corinna! I haven't decided what I'm going to try the Cherry Picker Trot in - it's about 3.9 miles which I should be able to do with 45 minutes at my regular pace, so I need to pick something a little lower for a "race pace."

Contemp - when I started the OHR, I was pretty off on the running. It took me about two weeks to get back to running 30 minutes without a break, but I just worked at it until I was back into running form.

Kim - we haven't had that much actual hot weather, Yesterday it was a little steamy - mid 80's and humid, but mostly it has been in the 70's and very pleasant. This morning is 66, or was when I looked. Good for you for running again - I know you have had a legitimate rough time lately - hope you are feeling better. Careful running in that heat, yourself. It's dreadful, isn't it? Evidently (according to Austin) it is miserable because your body can't cool itself as efficiently and so your heart beats faster to try to circulate that blood better for, uh, cooling with the capilaries which is more useless when it is hot. The perfect temperature for exertion is somewhere in the low 60's. Of course this could just be an ugly rumor. :rolleyes1

Kat - I am so proud of you for sticking with that OHR program. I am excited to hear more about your race, too. 3.9 miles is an unusual distance, isn't it? Is that 6K or is it just a random distance?

I have some race photos loading up to photobucket and will write it up later when I get back from my run around the block. ;)

Speaking of which, I'd better get going on that! Though DH is here this morning and so I don't have to get the kids squared away in their programs before I am FREE. :yay:

So it is a little late, but here is the report on my latest running escapades.

The race was a 3 mile fun run on the 4th of July. I had gotten my incredible brother in law to watch all 5 kids (my 2 and his 3) and I dropped them off at 7:30. The race was to begin at 8:15. Then I discovered that my Garmin had not charged in the night as I expected it to - falsley plugged in, it seems. I quickly borrowed my son's watch and figured out how to make it be a stopwatch. Not the easiest watch to figure out for some reason, but better than nothing.

It was a cool morning but pretty humid. I made several stops at the harbormaster's bathrooms, thrilled not to be facing a porta-potty wait each time I returned. I am not sure if it was nerves or what, but I was in there at least twice before the race got started.

So then the 10 mile runners came through and we cheered them on from the sides of the street. Their start had been in a different location 15 minutes earlier. The last runner before the police car bringing up the rear got the biggest cheer of all! Once they were past, it was time for us to line up for the 3 mile. Of course, I positioned myself toward the backity-back. I am never sure where to go and I figure it is better to be passing than be passed. Of course this is only my second race, so "never" is a bit of an exaggeration. I couldn't actually tell where the actual start of the race even was. There was a lady with a bullhorn, so I started my borrowed watch as soon as I passed where I thought she had been standing. Vague, yes?

Not much else to report. It was an out and back with a water stop at the turn-around and it was mostly on "Beach Drive" where I am very accustomed to running at this point. I guess I will just post the pictures.

And yes, this is where I get to run every run this month. :cloud9:

There was this woman about my mom's age running a little ahead of me as we neared the final stretch. She was keeping a pace just a little faster than mine, but I kept expecting that I might be able to pass her before the finish. I don't think I ever did, though.
DSCF0245.jpg

And then finally the finish. It feels so good to see that.

DSCF0247.jpg

They had water and bagels and oranges at the end, but all I had was some water because I had my invisalign thingies in, but it was a nice, fun time overall. OH, and about 10 minutes after I finished, along came the first of the 10 mile runners. He had done the whole 10 miles in something like 52 minutes. Wow. We all clapped and cheered and he broke into a smile. Then a little while after that, I saw the sweetest thing. There was a woman running, working really hard to get to the finish line. She had more extra weight on her than I did when I started and she was really pushing herself. I cheered her on, and then suddenly, a little boy, maybe 4 years old runs out and grabs her hand and she says "Oh! Hi Sweetie!" And he holds her hand and runs with her the rest of the way to the finish line. I about teared up right there, it was so inspiring and sweet all at once.

Overall, a good second race experience. Very casual, very nice. I had expected I could finish in 33 minutes and hoped to finish in 32 minutes. It turned out that I was able to finish, by my watch anyhow, in 31:51, which was very cool to me, especially since I had been without the Garmin and any indication of what my pace actually was! So there we have it - the lovely report on my second race along with the best of the scenery of my daily runs!

Today's run was really cool too - I decided to run into town and then as far as the gate for the point, which is about 1.75 miles, it turns out. So then I thought maybe there was a cross street that would bring me back into town from there without my doing a U-turn. I was running on this little back road, so pretty with occasional glimpses of the lake when I realized that I had run over 2 miles, was in fact more than 2 miles away from home and the road was not providing an easy way back. So I finally turned around a little reluctantly. It is so weird, but I ran 4.25 miles today in 54 minutes (nice and easy i.e. slow pace) and it was not even a huge trial. I feel like a running machine, like I get into this groove, this mode, and I am just going along, no need to stop. I feel like I could go on and on. I am not resenting the distance I need to get to. I am not resenting the time I need to get to. I'm mostly not even thinking about them. I did resent the humidity a little this morning, but even that was not a huge issue. It just made me slower is all. I am really enjoying this running on the roads too much, I think. Am I ever going to be satisfied to go back to the treadmill? How did this happen?

Yah Corrina! You've inspired me to get off my rearend and on the treadmill- too not to run outside.
Thanks for the motivation!!:cool1:

but all I had was some water because I had my invisalign thingies in,

Ok, first things first. You were working on straightening your teeth while running a race?? :confused3  You are THE WOMAN!!! :woohoo: Talk about multitasking!!! (sorry, that just caught my eye)

AWESOME job on the race! I'm so glad you brought your camera on the race. It really helps to feel like we're right there with ya! :goodvibes LOVE the views you have right now! Oh, and NO, I don't think you're gonna be happy with the dreadmill when you get home. Once you go outside, it's hard going back!!!

As for me, yes, the heat was a killer that day. I just need to get out there earlier on the weekends and stop "sleeping in" until 7:30. :rotfl: My optimal run weather is high 60's/low 70's with a slight drizzle. MAN, that's the best.

Kat - great job getting that run in when you weren't in the mood. I know how HARD that is...and you did it!! :cool1: Good luck in the Cherry Picker Trot. Sounds like fun, and I like that it's not a traditional distance. Kind of mixes things up.

contemp - Let us know how the run goes!!! Good job for getting started again. We ALL know how hard that is! :thumbsup2

Kim -My teeth are actually almost done. I am on the last set of aligners. I started 5 months ago, about the same time I started thinking of running. They have been my secret weapon, my secret motivation and my secret shame. Well, not so much the shame, though everyone that knows about them says that they never noticed my teeth were crooked. But I always noticed and I always felt they made me look kind of goofy. :goofy: Yup. Just like that!

I LOVE having brought the camera for my two races - I love looking back through and reliving the accomplishment. It feels good all over again. So far I have been lucky with the weather, too. It would be a bad thing to run with a camera in the rain. I am with you mostly on the weather, though I'm not as into the drizzle - I prefer 60-65 and crisp. :cloud9:

So you asked for before and after pictures. Let's see what I can do. Contrary to public belief, my clothes aren't actually falling off of me. ;) My shorts are getting looser and I may need to again go and buy a smaller bra. This is my reward. I am notcing that I may be developing a figure, a waist even, which is a nice development.

So now, in a rare moment, I am going to post pictures of the entire family. Partly because DH is changing too - check it out!

Photo 1 - you know where in January. I am still mortified by these pictures taken by a random stranger in front of the Crystal Palace one morning - she volunteered.

Photo 2 taken on the Pier here in Michigan by a random stranger who offered. We reciprocated- I took a couple of him and his lovely wife as well.

I still think my "Oh my gosh, I look SO much better" photo looks about like some people's "I can't believe I've gotten this fat" photos, but hey, I'm almost half-way there, so I guess that figures, huh? And I am actually more than halfway to being an actual althetic person! Also hilarious is the fact that DS8 and I are wearing the same shirts in both pictures. :dance3:

Contemp- I am so proud to be an inspiration to someone. I wrote that down as a benefit of weight loss when I was trying out the Beck diet solution, and it is really always so special to me to hear that I have been inspiring. Not to take too much credit, cause good for YOU for getting on that treadmill! It takes determination, I tell you! Way to go!

WOW!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Look at you guys!!! You both look great!! You can definitely see a big difference! And don't you dare start comparing yourself to other people. You are doing this for YOU, right? You're doing amazing things, my dear. You focus on that!! :goodvibes

(oh, and I noticed your DS wearing the same Mickey shirt right away b/c my DS has the same shirt. I didn't notice yours until I read what you said)

I might have to get some more info from you about the invisiligns. I wore braces in jr. high and was NOT good about wearing my retainers. I'd love to get my straight smile back. :guilty:

Thanks so much for the pictures!!! You're the best.

No, Kim. YOU are the best. I thought I was just trying not to get complacent about my progress - that has happened to me before when I have lost some weight and I think "Well! I don't look so bad now!" And then just kind of lost all steam. HOWEVER, now that you mention it, that was a really negative, evil self-talk kind of tactic on my part. I have SO been trying to focus in a different direction this time, in a healthy, kind to myself direction, mentally. Thank you for catching that and calling me on it!

Mostly :offtopic:
The invisalign has been nice, overall. I just got it through my regular dentist. Because my teeth weren't SO bad, I got an express version which was a lot less $$$ and the results are pretty good, I think. I have to wear them all the time except for eating, I have to take them out. I can eat whatever I want to when they are out, though. Then I have to brush and floss each time I put them back in to prevent decay. So that is brushing and flossing at least 3 times a day. More if I have a snack. Which really helped me cut down on a lot of mindless eating I had been doing. They were really sore when I first started, but after the third set of aligners, they only got minorly sore each time I got a new set. I am on set #9, the last set, at least in theory. There is still a gap in my front teeth we may see if they can fix with another "tune-up" set of aligners. I might be able to get a halfway decent before/after for my teeth, come to think of it. I have been surprised by my response to the change, too. A few aligners ago, I started to think I was looking actually pretty! I have always thought of myself as mostly "cute":cutie: but rarely pretty!

Back ON topic - my 3 miles are calling to me this morning. Kim, it is YOUR kind of day out there. about 60 and a slight drizzle. I am going to go out there and enjoy it and think of how much fun it would be if we were actually out there running together!

:sad1: OK, you did it again. You're so good at making me cry.

One of these days, girlie. We'll meet up and run together! Maybe even in WDW! :thumbsup2

Keep on rockin' it girl, and thanks so much for the invisalign info. I think my teeth might be too far gone, but I'm gonna ask at the dentist when I go back - epecially since I just got new/better dental insurance!:yay:

As for MY running - I think I'm gonna get out there tomorrow before work and run a "kim".

Hey Kim - I love that you have your own signature run. :) Running a "Kim" is a lot of fun, I have to say! Hope you had a good one!

Your teeth could be invisalignable - it's just hard to know. I know they do a lot more severe cases than mine (they have videos on the website). Your teeth don't look bad in your photo AT ALL, incidentally! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Yesterday had been Kim's kind of day, but I didn't get out there in time for the sprinkles. :( By the time I got going, it was cool but not really rainy. It was still a pretty good day for running and I did a whole 3.5 miles (I only intended to do 3, but somehow that extra half just happened......just call me the "oops" girl) but did not set any speed records. I'm going for nearly a 12 mile week, I guess. So far, I am at 7.75 I would need 4.25 again on Friday to get 12. I guess we will see how it pans out.

That 2009 half marathon is still on my wishlist - that's the Runner's UNITE reunion plan, right? pirate:

Hey Kat! It's cherry season here in Michigan. Mmmmm. Cherries. When is your race?

That 2009 half marathon is still on my wishlist - that's the Runner's UNITE reunion plan, right? pirate:

That's the plan! :thumbsup2 Just gotta get my butt out there & running!!

Didn't make it out the door this morning, or awake in time to run I should say. :guilty: I SERIOUSLY need to get to bed earlier at night. :sad2:

Once I walked out the door to get in my car this morning and felt the slight "chill" in the air - I was SO mad at myself for not running this morning.

The mornings are tough, there is no way around that, I'll agree. Hopefully that chill will stick around a while and you'll have another chance at it. There is quite a chill here tonight. I am hoping for more of the same tomorrow morning.....

Fortunately, you have a little time to build for 2009. :thumbsup2

What is a chill? We've had three consecutive 100 degree days now. Yuck! I ran on Monday and haven't had the motivation since then. My parents are visiting and we're doing a LOT of walking and I'm just too tired to do running as well. The Cherry Picker Trot is next Thursday - forecast of 76 and thunderstorms - hey, it's a Kim run! :rotfl:

Corinna, you can definitely tell you've lost weight! I've found my waist again, even though I'm stuck at a weight plateau. And walking uphill at the water park on Wednesday normally would have gotten me all out of breath - but now it's normal for me!

Kat, that sounds absolutely brutal. I hope that heat wave ends soon. Tell us more about this water park!

What did I say I was going to do today? I actually managed 4.5 - that's four and a half miles!!! 55 minutes!! For a total of 12.25 miles this week. Whew. My feet are the part that complain the most about it. My heart and lungs were totally cool. My legs got a little tired, but I wonder if my feet are ever going to be OK with the longer distances. Well, it's not that bad. And the weather was gorgeous - cool and not too humid. Pretty windy, which feels good and slows you down all at once.

Next Saturday is my next race, which means I am going to have to shake up the running schedule a little. Cause MWF mornings is not going to agree well with a Saturday morning race. I am thinking I will do M,W,S and have an extra rest day in there before the race. It's a theory anyhow. The other thing to figure out is how far to go each day, I guess.

Hey ladies!
Water park exercise sounds great in this humidity. When we go to BB and TL, I sometimes jog against the current in the lazy river. Its also alot of fun to swim with the current. You go really fast!

I have been running 2 miles every other day, now no breaks. Its slow, my pace is only 13 min/mile but at least I'm moving. Next week I go to a conference, no kids so I'm going to set my alarm clock and continue the running, on the off days I plan to walk 3 miles. Its a lofty goal but i really want to fit into that little black dress in august.

I have a sneaker question, how often do you buy a new pair?

contemp - that is awesome! 2 miles every other day is a great place to be, and there is nothing wrong with a 13 minute mile! That is about the pace at which I ran my first 5K in May.

The shoe question - I am no expert, but I have heard 500 miles, I think? There is a calculator on one of the running sites maybe, but it has been a while since I looked at it.

Hey guys!

I actually ran yesterday!! :woohoo: I did 3.06 miles in 37.11 minutes. Not too bad! I took a few short walk breaks, since it was toasty hot at 8am, but it's all good!

Plan is to run tomorrow morning. I'm setitng a curfew for myself tonight of 10pm. If I want to keep on running, I need to make sleep more of a priority. :thumbsup2

As far as how often to replace your sneakers...I think they said 500 miles. Which at the time I thought would take FOREVER! But honestly I haven't been tracking how many I run (I guess I could look back in my WISH journal). So I figured I'd do about once a year unless I start running a whole lot more often or a lot more miles at a time.
