Hello all my name is Kyle and I’d like to welcome you all to what will probably be a very convoluted PTR/Training report. It’s been a while since I've done this so please take it easy on me:)

I plan on using this as both a Pre Trip Report and a training plan update so hopefully it won't get to complicated. I'll make sure to include direct links to the different sections once I get them up and running.

The PTR will cover planning for three different runDisney trips. The first will be in August for the Disneyland Half Marathon. My son will be joining me for this trip and it will be his first Half Marathon. The second trip will be for the Avengers Super Heroes Half in November. My wife will be joining me for this one and I couldn't be more excited as I am a big Marvel Comics fan. The final trip will be in January for Marathon Weekend. I bit the bullet and will be running the Dopey Challenge for the first time. I'm honestly freaking out a bit because this is something I NEVER thought I would attempt.

I would like to start out by giving you a bit of history to help set up this PTR. I have always struggled with weight issues and in May 2012 I finally decided to do something about it. After visiting my parents in Florida I noticed how a lack of exercise was really affecting my dad as he got older. I remember looking in the mirror and telling myself that something had to change. I wasn’t getting any younger and as you can see from this picture, I was heading down a very bad path.

The first step toward a healthier me was actually very simple. I stopped drinking diet pop (yes I’m from Michigan…we say pop). The first couple weeks were lined with headaches from the caffeine withdrawal but other than that I really didn’t find it too difficult to stop.

From there I had to decide the best way to lose the weight. I've tried dieting in the past with mixed results. I would lose 10 or 15 pounds and then gain it all back. I tried the Atkins Diet and was mildly successful but gained it all back when I realized I couldn't eat that way for the rest of my life.

This time I decided emphatically that I wasn't going to diet. Diets don’t work for me. I was simply going to watch how much I ate by controlling my portions sizes and trying to cut out the sweets.

The other mindset I had was that I wasn’t going for a specific goal weight. I didn’t (and still don’t) care how much I lost as long as I was feeling healthier and could sustain this plan for the rest of my life…no end game…no finish date…forever! I didn’t even weigh myself when I began so I still don’t know what my true starting weight was.

For the next step on my road to health I decided to get some exercise. Some of my Facebook friends had run Disney races and I always thought it would be cool to be able to do that one day.

My goal was to get in shape enough to where I would run a full 5K race. At the time it seemed like such a daunting task but I was determined to try and train for one.

I started to look at the runDisney website and noticed a training plan by runDisney training partner Jeff Galloway. There was a Youtube video explaining his training methods so I took a look. The point of the video was to let you know that it is not necessary to run the entire distance during an endurance race. His theory is that by doing a combination of running and walking you're able to preserve your body and reduce the risk of injury dramatically. I found the video fascinating so I laced up my shoes and went outside for my first run in a long time.

My first run was a mile long using a 10 second run / 50 second walk interval. My time was 17 minutes but I felt really good afterword. For the next couple of weeks I did the same thing while gradually increasing my distance and never had a bad experience. I was getting out in the sun and really enjoying my runs.

That summer I decided to take the plunge and sign up for my first 5K. I never thought I would have been ready that quickly but I knew I could do it using the Galloway plan. The morning was extremely hot and my time was very slow but I actually finished the race. (I wasn’t even last)! It was at that moment that I knew I was hooked!

This is what a chubby guy looks like after running 3 miles:)

When I got back to the house I went online to research the training plan for a Half Marathon. After reviewing it over, and over, and over, and discussing it with my wife, I finally decided to take the plunge. I went on to the runDisney website and signed up for the 2012 Wine & Dine Half Marathon.

Over the next few months I followed the training plan and on November 10, 2012 I finished my very first Half Marathon.

I was so proud of myself after that race. I couldn’t believe that I had actually done it. You can find my blog post about the race here.

Since that first race I have really changed and become even more addicted. I followed that race up with the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge 2013, Wine & Dine 1/2 again in 2013, and my first full Marathon this past January 2014.

I'll be documenting some of my training as well as the other races I'll be running. So far this year I've run The WDW Marathon, four other 1/2 marathons and I have at least six more halfs to go. My plan is to post a few pictures from those races and provide updates to the rest of my training once a week. I will also continue to update my blog as well. You can find that link in my signature below.

Other ways to follow me include Twitter (@TigerTownTales), and Instagram (TigerTownTales)

I'm looking forward to this year of running and getting to know more fellow runners and/or aspiring runners :thumbsup2

Hey!! Am I the first to join in?

What a great backstory. Congratulations on taking charge of your life and becoming a healthier and more active person. I was one of those people that a few years ago would have laughed you out of the room if you told me I would one day run a half-marathon, and here I am with 2 halfs and 2 fulls under my belt and training for Goofy. I can't bring myself to do Dopey. 4 early AM wake-ups is too daunting. But, the 5 year anniversary of Dopey combined with the 25 year of the Marathon might be too much for me to resist. We'll see if I can survive Goofy first. :rotfl:

Looking forward to following your training!! :goodvibes

Welcome and thanks for the words of encouragement! I read your trip reports as well and you also have an interesting back story. I can't even imagine trying to train right after going through those treatments. You must have an iron will!

I'd normally be worried about the early mornings as well but last year, even though I only ran the full, I got up each morning to cheer on my running team. I was tired but after few afternoon naps, everything was fine. The real hard part for me wasn't getting up early but actually trying to go to bed early. I have a hard time being at Disney and not being n the parks ;)

Well this week was a bit on the light side training wise.

My schedule called for some track work on Tuesday doing 4 X 800 repeats at different intervals. This session was great and I was able to get my last 800 repeat time down to 4:44 which is really good for me.

On Thursday it was time to head down to the local Metro park to work on some hill repeats. I love running at this park because its a challenge but the scenery is beautiful. Most of the paved trail runs along side the Huron River in S/E Michigan.

LowerHuron_zpscee190b5.jpg

I ended up running 2 miles and the doing 10 hill repeats. This is the fourth week I've done the hills and I can really tell that its working. I'm not nearly as winded when I get to the top now.

On Sunday I was supposed to run 14 miles but I was at a music festival in Columbus OH where I ended up walking over 30 miles in three days. I was bummed to miss my run but on the other hand, it was great to spend a quality weekend with my Daughter!

Yay! I am here to follow along! So glad you started a PTR. :thumbsup2 I love your back story! So great that you took charge of your health!

So it looks like we will be at the same race weekends. (except I am doing ToT too... and NOT doing dopey but rather just donald.)

Cant wait to read all about your plans and training for the coming year. :goodvibes:

Sounds like you had a good training week even if a bit lighter than you intended. But, I'd say walking 30 miles probably still counts! ;) Love the shot of you and your daughter.

I've been doing some track running too with our training. I hate it. Like, a lot. But, I'm hoping over the course of the training it will help me. Great job on your time!

That running trail looks beautiful. I really enjoy taking advantage of our running trails here as well. It helps a lot on those long runs to have some nice scenery.

Thank you and Welcome!

I think its funny that you mention "Just" Donald. Thats still an awesome accompishment! I had the same thing last year when I "just" ran the Marathon. Everyone kept laughing at me for saying "just" in reference to a Marathon.

Hopefully We'll get a chance to meet during one of the races. I'm on a Disney running team so my Disney race weekends are full of meet & greet opportunities. I'm always happy to meet new Disney friends :)

We had a ton of fun but I was totally exhausted and my ears were ringing for a couple of days. My buddy owns a T-Shirt and Hat business so we go work the festival for him every year and he gets us into the concerts for free. It's kind of a win-win.

Track work isn't my favorite but it really does help. When Jeff first gave me my training plan I wasn't really looking forward to all of the track work but I'm now into a pretty good routine and I'm ok with it.

That running trail looks beautiful. I really enjoy taking advantage of our running trails here as well. It helps a lot on those long runs to have some nice scenery.

I love that park. The rolling hills really help with the endurance on long runs and the scenery is tough to beat.

I know... Even a half isn't anything to shake a stick at... But it is far from the headliner of the weekend. All if these challenges kinda force those of us "just" doing one of the races to have to use the word "just" or "only". I think mostly during marathon weekend though - given that there is dopey- goofy - the full and then the half. I know the phm now has the gsc... But at least the next step down is the half.

Hopefully We'll get a chance to meet during one of the races. I'm on a Disney running team so my Disney race weekends are full of meet & greet opportunities. I'm always happy to meet new Disney friends :)

How fun to be on a team! Hopefully we will be able to meet. I too am happy to meet new Disney friends :) dis meets are very cool and to make it a run dis meet would be even that much cooler!

Hi Kyle!

Finally got a minute to catch up on your report. Loved your intro post and I'm looking forward to following a fellow Dope/Wino :) Can't wait to hear about the Disneyland races!!

Hope you're having a great week (running-wise and in general)!

If you haven't joined a team I would recommend it. My wife and I are both part of the WDW Radio Running Team but I also run with, and have friends in the Mickey Milers team as well. The DIS also has the W.I.S.H. team but I don't know too many members. I'm sure they are a nice group as well. I've met so many great people through these teams that I really don't consider them "running friends" anymore. Now they're just friends I only get to see a couple times a year :)

On January 1st of this year I had an epihany. I love the Half Marathon distance and would like to run more of them in 2014.

Fast forward a couple of months and for some unkown reason, I thought it would be a good idea to try and run ten of them this year.:scared: I'm not really sure what I was thinking but the Half has now replaced most of the 5K and 10K races I ran last year.

Once I finshed my first full marathon in January I was pretty sure it would be a one and done for me. Once again, fast forward a couple of months and i'm signed up for the Dopey Challenge. I must be crazy:crazy2:

So you don't train together just meet up at the disney races? Sounds like a lot of fun and a good way to make friends. (even if they are just friends you see a couple times a year. ;))

BTW... I am in awe that you are running so many half marathons! That is so awesome! I wonder, is the key to just maintain mileage? After I came home from marathon weekend, I found I just kept my mileage up and it wasn't hard. I thought about on a whim running a half. I think I totally could have. Now though, I cut my miles way back and worry that I no longer could just "do a half" on a whim. I know I will get my mileage back up. I just wanted to have a plan of attack with the halfs I do have. So I am kinda following the galloway schedule.... but it will be tricky when I am training for multiple RD events. I figure I will have to choose the plan with the most miles when I am leading into a race but then during the taper would opt for the lowest miles. (if this makes sense) So if I have a day training for the DLH that calls for a 10 mile run in June but the ToT calls for a 3 mile on that same day - I would pick the 10mile but then just before the DLH if the day lists those same miles I would pick the 5 miles. I don't know... maybe I am doing it all wrong.

We don't train together but we're all on Facebook so the interaction with each other still happens almost every day. Some of them are even coming up here to Michigan to run the Detroit Half with us in the fall.

Once you've built up to the Half Marathon distance it's really just about maintenance. I do two shorter runs during the week usually on the track or at the Metro park running the hills and then I do a long run once every two or three weeks. The key for me is not to worry about speed on the long runs just make sure to get the distance in. The speed work comes during the week. Below are the weekend sections of my training plan so you can see how the long runs work:

5/18 = 14 miles
5/25 = 3 Miles
6/1 = Half Marathon Race
6/8 = 3 Miles
6/15 = 14.5 Miles
6/22 = 3 miles
6/29 = 16 miles
7/6 = 4 Miles
7/13 = 4 Miles (With one Magic Mile)
7/20 = 17 Miles
7/27 = 4 Miles
8/3 = 4 Miles (With one Magic Mile)
8/10 = 17 Miles
8/17 = 4 Miles
8/24 = 4 Miles (With one Magic Mile)
8/31 = Disneyland Half Marathon
9/7 = 4 Miles
9/14 = 5 Miles
9/21 = USAF Half Marathon
9/28 = Brooksie Way Half Marathon + 3 extra slow miles during warm up
10/5 = 3 Miles
10/12 = 17 Miles
10/19 = Detroit Half (Nice and Slow!)
10/26 = 4 Miles
11/2 = 20 Miles
11/9 = 4 Miles
11/16 = Avengers Half
11/23 = 4 Miles
11/30 = 23 Miles
12/7 = 4 Miles
12/14 = 13 Miles
12/21 = 26 Miles
12/28 = 4 Miles
1/4 = 6 Miles
1/11 = WDW Marathon (Dopey Finish)

Well I just saw the announcement from runDisney regarding the new Star Wars race and while I'm glad they're having it, the location and timing doesn't work for me.

I honestly think it's time for me to take a step back from some of the races anyway. This year I'm signed up for four runDisney race weekends which will be great, but I've hit my limit. As much as I love the races, and hanging out with my Disney friends, I just can't keep up with the increasing costs and multiple trips to the west coast.

It was fun while it lasted but I'm going to have to pick my race weekends more carefully and scale it down to one or two a year. :sad2:

I had a group of online friends that were like that. It was so nice! I loved having them in my life (even if it was just via text/fb or disboards) Those kinds of relationships can certainly be blessings. :goodvibes

That is kinda what I wondered. I had been maintaining my miles and then decided to drop down to start the "official" RD training. A month ago I think I could have down a half as a spur of the moment thing... but not now. :sad2:

I kinda have mixed feelings on the whole thing too. I know that a lot of people are bummed that it is in CA. For us, that is the ONLY reason why it is even remotely doable. We are doing the donald... and dh has to be back to work early. I definitely will not be doing the StarWars half. I am not even sure I will be flying down (my goal was to just stay a bit longer in WDW after dh left) However, my dh is totally excited about the Rebel challenge... so he will be going. It has me :scared: This year we are going a bit crazy with the races. I cant very well suggest to him that he can't though.. after all.. I have the DLH as a girls trip and if all goes well a short girls trip for the phm. The cost are getting out of control though... and so I see next year (starting in fall of 2015) that we will have to scale back seriously. Probably only doing the ToT, AHM and SWHM (all for legacy reasons)

Did 7 miles last weekend... and it felt pretty good. I am sure you are right. My mileage will get back up there pretty quick and pretty easily. Speed work this weekend and then 9 miles the following week.

And those are just the weekend runs! :crazy2:
