Hi All
Can anyone tell me why so many people refer to Big Thunder Mountain as the "runaway train"? I grew up calling it the runaway train and so do others I know. Was it originally called the runaway train????

Probably the same reason people call The Mad tea party "The Tea cups".

There is a very similar, though not nearly as much fun ride at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ called the Runaway Train. Maybe from that?

The ride's backstory is you are on a runaway train. It's out of control and rushing dangerously through the mine area.

Park map lists it as "Runaway train coaster."

I grew up calling it the Runaway Train too. Because of this, I always assumed Soul Asylum were really big WDW fans.

In the roller coaster world thats the type of roller coaster it is.

There are a number of categories of coasters.

Here is a list from Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roller_coaster#Types_of_roller_coasters

BTMR on this list is a Mine Train Coaster. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mine_Train_roller_coaster but it could also be referred to as a Run a Way Train Coaster.

Some people call Space Mountain a Wild Mouse Coaster due to its car type and the track layout or even a Jr. Coaster since as coasters go its pretty tame for a coaster, even when it was built.

I too called it the runaway train. I think at 4 years old that was how I thought of it, since it is a runaway train. :thumbsup2

I have heard both, but it was never officially called the runaway train. I, of course, just always call it Thunder Mtn.

Does anyone know why it would be named something different on the official park map?

Judging by the title, I thought I was going to read a story of a runaway train on BTMRR. Guess not. :)

Isn't it's a Haunted Runaway train. I seem to remember that it is on an ancient burial ground.

This thread got me thinking about what I call BTMRR. I have always called it "Thunder Mountain" -- I have no idea why I don't use "Big" when I say it. Anyone else call it that?

This is my reasoning and usually when traveling with my family/friends from NJ it's easier to call it the Runaway Train... They know what they are expecting from it.

Except my mom back in 1992... my mom hated coasters of any kind and my dad and aunt tricked her onto it. Oh were THEY in trouble afterwards!:rotfl:

We've always called it by it's actualy name...this is the first I've heard of it having a alias!
