I am not sure if there is already a thread out there for this or not, but I am posting this just in case...

Disney has been sponsoring multiple running events (Kids running events, 5 K Family Runs, Half Marathons, and Marathons) for quite some time now. Up until now, the biggest athletic feat that my family has reached within a Disney Park was the quick paced hike (remember, the rules say no running!) from the rope drop at park opening to the front of the line for our favorite rides. This year, that is going to change. My wife and I have decided that we are making fitness a priority (which has been neglected for way too long in our home...) and have begun to participate in the Run Disney program and intend on entering an event this year.

My thought is that there might be other DVC members out there who are going to participate with Run Disney and enter a Disney Park running event. Whether a disciplined and experienced runner, or a former couch potato who is trying to improve their fitness, please check in here and let us know that you are participating in Run Disney and which race you are preparing for.

Hopefully, this thread will help motivate those of us in the program...

Here is a list of upcoming races and members who have confirmed that they are running in them (send me a pm with which race you are running and I'll add you to the list):

It's only fair that I start this out...

We are running in the 2011 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend during Labor Day Weekend (just reserved our villa at VCG!). Right now we are committed to the 5k event, but with enough motivation and preparation we hope to tackle the Half Marathon.

I'll join in. After 10 years of being way too sedentary from an illness/major surgery, and then being pregnant and having babies, I started getting back in shape.
I did my first triathlon in August and had a blast. Can't wait until next summer where I want to do at least three including an olympic distance.

I'm signed up for the Princess half in Feb as my first half marathon. It will be a girls weekend and there will be at least 5 of us. Staying at POR since I'm not using points as we don't have enough points left over for next year.
Long term goal is my first full in 2012 and the half at DL in '12 to get my coast to coast medal.

On a side note, I'm doing the race for hot chocolate 15k in Chicago in Nov. Dh is signed up for the 5k. I have motivated him and now he is getting back into shape too. :cheer2:

I always said that I have absolutely no interest in running a full marathon. Since getting back on the wagon, I'm having enough fun that it may happen. (I also always said that I'd never get a tattoo. If I run that full, I'll be getting Mickey on my ankle with 26.2 underneath).

Fun thread.

My husband is running his second Goofy Challenge in January and our son is running his first Disney Half in January. I get to sleep in.

Our family started running this past march. Since we have participated in several races. My wife and DD doing 5km. I have done several 10km, 1/4 marathons and have been training for my first half marathon next weekend in Niagara Falls. I have also registered for the half Marathon in Disney this jan.
I must admit, since starting this I have lost weight, my health has improves and all around feel great!
I encourage everyone to try and participate in some form of exercise. The benefits of running I have found to be amazing. And for me, in order to stay motivated, I have found registering for different events really helps.
It doesn't matter how good or fast you are. Its all about getting out there.:thumbsup2

I already did my first WDW event, so I hope I can still join in?

Little background, I used to be very overweight and a chain smoker...I lost a lot of weight:banana: ..Actually chain smokers used to tell me I smoked too much...Thats bad:scared1: I decided I wanted to quit smoking (this was March '09) but I'd need to replace it with something otherwise the weight would've come right back on...So I decided to walk, there is a school across the street from me, and I love to walk the track there. So I decided to train to walk the WDW Princess Half Marathon this past March:goodvibes I loved it, it was my first race of any kind, and it was so fun.

Now I am in training to do a race in Orlando in Dec (but not in WDW) I'm a bit sidelined w/a calf injury this weekend:sad2: But I'm sure I'll be back to normal soon...I'm actually training to do a walk/run combo on this race:cheer2:

I havent got any races planned as of yet for 2011, because financially I'm not sure what we're doing for trips, etc.

My DH and I are joining! We are going to run in the January 1/2 marathon!! I am so excited and can't wait to make it to the full marathon. I just keep tell my DH that I want to run around the world! (he just laughs and shakes his head in responce)

DH and I just got back from running the innagural F&W 1/2 marathon. It was our first race and we finished in 2:11. We said once was enough, but we are already looking into other races. Someone told me about the hot cocoa one in Chicago yesterday and I'm going to look it up. It's supposed to be a lot of fun. Plan on doing another race with DH, but it may have to wait until 1/2 marathon 2012 - or I need more points! I never thought of myself as a runner, but I used it to take off 45 pounds 7 years ago and stuck with it. Find a program you like and stick with it and you'll be amazed what you can do!:goodvibesA lot of the runners at the 1/2 were talking baout Jeff Galloway - he's the official running coach for run disney. He advocates a run/walk method. I'm going to get a book on it because many people say their time improves using it.

^ Thats exactly what I am using to train is the Galloway walk/run intervals.
For example, I am in week 7 now, today I was supposed to walk 3 min/run 1 minute for a total of 7 miles...I am hoping the calf is better and I can do this tomorrow...One of the friends that I am doing the Orlando Half with is also doing same Galloway training.

Another great book is "Marathoning for Mortals". It has plans for walking, walk/running, run/walking and running both half and full marathons.

I'm using the marathon running plan for the half but will top off my long runs to about 14m.

Ran 9 today and feel great. I agree that being active makes me feel so much better. Who would have thunk it? I look forward to my work outs and am bummed out when I have to miss one. In turn it makes me eat healthier, but at the same time don't feel as bad having ice cream at night if I've worked out that day.
Good luck to everyone and their training. The WISH board down below is a great place for support in the events/competition forum. Some of the threads get a bit "clicky" but still lots of support from many.

My DH and I just did the Mickey's Halloween 5K -- our first Run Disney event. We've committed to each other that we'll do the Wine and Dine Half Marathon next fall -- and I'm eyeing the Princess Half Marathon in February.

We would like to do the Wine and Dine. We did the Disneyland 5k this labor day weekend. Had a lot of fun. The 5k's are new to us this year, and the one we completed this morning cut our time down by 6 minutes. We're getting there!

My son, daughter-in-law, grandson (12), granddaughter (8), and I did the Mickey's Halloween 5K this year and loved it. Such fun, and seeing all the costumes was great! I need to work on my time, but completing the 5K was a start. Now, onward and upward from here. I've downloaded the Couch25K app for the iPhone, and it's helping with the run/walk. I love that it lets you add your own music.

hubby and I have been looking at some of the runs but he has injured his knee so that is sidelined until he can get the damage taken care of.:sick:

I'm doing the half in January with a friend. I started running back in April and this will be my first of hopefully many half's to come. I asked DH to do it with me but he had no interested so now it's going to be a girls weekend complete with massages after the race.

My brother got me involved four years ago -- I did my first half marathon in January 2008. My wife and I did the circle of life 5k in 2009 (and I did the half marathon). I enjoyed freezing temps and sleet in last years half.

This year I'm registered for my first marathon. My training was going great until I hurt my knee doing yard work (grrr). I see the doc tomorrow... :: fingers crossed ::

Disney races are very social, very festive, and generally flat. We've modified our yearly trip to align with marathon weekend (we weren't thinking of this at ALL when we bought into DVC -- DVC is more than just the parks :: big smile :: ).

I hope everyone's training goes smoothly -- and I hope this thread tempts some more DVC members into running :)

82 days until my first marathon...

I am glad to hear that the "Couch to 5k" program is working for you. I haven't heard from anyone who has used it befor now and I had just downloaded it at the app. store and will be using it later this week...

Good luck in your race. I hope to be there next year with dh. Just have to plan out our DVC points and decide where we can stay.

Does anyone have any experience with booking a studio at the 7m window for marathon weekend. Not sure where we would want to stay. Maybe OKW, BWV or BCV. I'd be up for anywhere and will book SSR at 11m out. Just wondering how tough it is to get a studio that weekend at other resorts at the 7m window.
