Rumors of Light (ROL discussion thread)

DISCLAIMER: So the week is turning into one of those ............ so for some distraction and venting you may see some Lounger spam.
I apologize in advance.
I shall try to keep it theme park based.

BIG NEWS, head spinning fast, Comcast has purchased Dreamworks for 3.5-3.8 BILLION dollars (price varies by source).

"Jeffrey Katzenberg and the DreamWorks organization have created a dynamic film brand and a deep library of intellectual property," NBCUniversal Chief Executive Officer Stephen Burke said in a press release. "DreamWorks will help us grow our film, television, theme parks and consumer products businesses for years to come."

What COULD this mean to us? [insert speculation]

Oh there is about 475 acres of land that Comcast just bought by the Convention Center not far from Universal that is large enough for at least 2 parks and resorts ....

That means we could be seeing Shrek's swamp, Far Far Away and Duloc OR some awesome fun with Kung Fu Panda OR let's contain our excitement for How to Train your Dragon (awesome attraction material) and one of my favorites would make an awesome land Road to El Dorado ...............

SO much property to work with, HUGE plus to Universal to get young families to visit away from the Mouse.

And they do build fast .............. the Mouse needs to get their butt in gear and finish what it has started and figure out what they are going to do next.

Mouse, they may be tapping the young market .... and add some more competitive family hotels..... do not ignore the elephant in the room.

NOTE: Huge Disney fan, minimal Universal fan

I just can't get excited about Universal stuff. Tried. Nope. :-/

Not a Universal fan either, they tend to build cheap and warehouse style, full of overlays AND I know zero about Harry Potter ...........

BUT the Harry Potter lands in each park are over the top in creative, detail and very-un-universal ... maybe because I believe they were designed by ex-Imagineers.

And Kong is looking good, minus the billboard mountains, and has potential to WOW.

If they can build new parks the quality of those two lands, I can overlook their un-magical feel to enjoy some cool Dreamworks worlds.

Not quite across the board. We just moved from AoA to the Poly today - had an alarm clock at AoA (Cars suite), but no clock at Poly (standard room).

Ok --- guess we weren't going nuts !! We didn't have an alarm clock in our POP room last November --- !
Why , oh why !!???

Seems like alarm clocks are becoming a thing of the past. It has been YEARS since we've used one... we all use our phones.

No only do we not use them, we unplug them to get more plug room for all our electronics and have phone by bed.

The nicer alarm clocks that we can use to play our music etc are usually bolted to the nightstand.

I hear ya. I might have said this here already (who can remember with all the talking about nothing?!), but there is one Universal thing my kids want to see. The new Walking Dead attraction they announced for Universal Hollywood! Silly... they haven't seen more than a few clips of TWD. I think they would both LOSE IT!!! :rotfl:

I'm worried that I've seen too much of that show and might reflexively aim for their heads if they came anywhere near me!! :scared1:

HAHA, DS and I watch TWD, DH leaves the room!

No only do we not use them, we unplug them to get more plug room for all our electronics and have phone by bed.

We're the opposite -- we prefer to have our phones as far away from the bed as possible. (At home, they stay in the kitchen at night.) We *want* a traditional alarm clock in our room when we travel. We always have at least one travel size standard outlet power strip and two 4-port USB power strips with us when we travel and I recently added an alarm clock to that bin.

What I don't understand with Disney is that I've read that in some resort rooms they've removed the alarm clocks and replaced them with a power block containing both standard and USB outlets. Why not replace them with the alarm clocks that have the power outlets and USB ports on them??? That way *everybody* can be happy and no one is caught off guard when they get to their room and find out there is no alarm clock. They could at least put a little card on that table indicating you can call mousekeeping and request an alarm clock -- they've probably got bins and bins full of them. :D

Exactly what we do. I won't miss the alarm clocks at all

I actually like seeing an alarm clock if I wake in the middle of the night so I don't have to fumble around in the dark for my phone. It stays in my purse anyway. LOL

I'm in the process of trying very hard to get excited. We have not set foot in Universal since 2003, so I promised the family we would wander over there for a day during our 'Disney' vacation this year. Unfortunately, I regret my promise. I have zero desire to click on any of the Universal threads, and I just can't bring myself to plan for any parks that are not on Disney property. Rest assured, we will be the dazed and confused family searching for Diagon Alley. I am hopelessly addicted to the mouse, and there is no cure.

Cool! How much longer until you finish your degree?
Well.. after much deliberation, I've decided to go part time (or 3/4ths time) next year and get a job. Two scholarships I had ran out because I took a while to decide what I wanted to study and used it up on random classes, already accumulated $18k student loans and want to keep that minimized. Also, beginning in 2020 Registered Dietitians will be required to have a Master's degree, so I'm just going to go ahead with it. So 2018 now for B.S. and 2020+ for master's... and I started college in 2010 (off and on while working ~32 hr/week). Going to try not to think about that....

So Loungers .... this is one of the best videos I have seen from Media Preview Night ..... we can then imagine the rest as we sip our Lounge cocktails. :drinking1

From The Disney Blog

Not going to let myself watch it until we return so I won't be sad to miss the opportunity!

We leave TOMORROW! DH surprised me by taking off work completely instead of taking off at lunch! We're planning to leave about 10 am!! It doesn't even feel real yet!!

Good night :D

Can't wait to hear about your trip! Safe travels!!

For the record, I am in the "pro" alarm clock camp, lol! I adapted and used my phone but missed seeing big glowing numbers in the middle of the night! Weird thing about AKL, they didn't even have a good power block thing so it was kind of a pain recharging stuff! So I looked at giraffes - I'm kidding, but it was pretty cool watching them sleep and wake up in the morning!

Ok, so how does a giraffe sleep? Standing, lying down? Curious minds want to know.
