While I agree that not everyone who comes through the turnstiles is planning to stay for ROL, I'm not sure that viewing from anywhere other than the two seating sections is really an option. From what I've read on many of the threads, the visual effects are aimed at the audience, and while people standing on the walk ways might be able to see some of the lighting features, much of it will be blocked by the trees etc. It's not like EPCOT where the water if easily visible. THat's what I've read anyway.I'm not sure why people keep saying the show capacity is 5,000. The SEATING capacity is 5,000. But it's a big show on a big lake with walkways everywhere. I don't doubt that 8-10k can watch the show comfortably at a time. Plus, daily attendance may be 30k. But how many stay the whole time to watch the show? How many families head back to the hotel and don't come back? How many skip it altogether because they've seen it a few times and want to take another spin on the Safari? Etc. 30,000 people is all the people who walked through the turnstile all day, whether they came in for a character breakfast and left or if they came in for the evening EMH. It doesn't mean that there are 30k people there at night every night.
