Anyone know if the Fantasy still offering Rum tasting seminars?

They did a few months ago at least, my husband did it in January on the Fantasy (I got a drink and read in a deck chair, not a rum fan myself lol)

I haven't done one, but I heard on the DCL blog podcast that the variety of rums really isn't very unique or interesting. They said it was mainly variations of Bacardi, verus local Caribbean or even South American rums. That made me think we will skip that one.

This is probably true, but if you don't know much about the history of rum or how it's made, you might still learn a lot. The tequila tasting was all patron products so not super fancy, but our instructor spent lots of time talking about the history and production process. So, if you want to do it to try new and different runs, then there's a good chance it's worth skipping. If you want to learn more about rum in general, you might still find it worthwhile.

That was the conclusion that the DCL blog came to as well.

I'd say that holds true for most of the tastings on DCL. If you enjoy a certain type of alcohol and want to try some and maybe learn something, you'll like it. But if you are already a knowledgeable "fanatic" then you will probably be disappointed. I did the Cognac and the Whiskey tastings. I enjoy these types of alcohol, but am not SUPER knowledgeable, so I liked it, as did the others in our groups. But if you already know a ton about it, and have tried dozens and dozens of varieties, don't expect anything you don't already know or haven't tried. Of course, even then it can be enjoyable. If you come in with the correct expectations.

I agree that the tastings don't always have the best variety but can be really interesting if the CM is good. We did a whisky tasting where the CM was very educated about the history, process etc. and a great speaker and it was wonderful. We also did a tequila tasting which only included 3 Patron products and where the CM (admittedly) knew nothing about tequila beyond the basics provided in his training script and it was not good at all.

It is what you make of it. Sure its not the greates rums, but if you can do it to get in character the day of pirate night, it can be fun. After all, pirates didn't drink the fancy stuff we have nowadays :)
