Without disclosing too much, my disability prevents me from long, closed in queues. However, a short open air queue is something I could do.

If I get a return time for say Pirates, could I ride magic carpets while i wait? Or if I get a return for 7DMT, ride teacups while I wait?

I would hate for Disney to think I was lying and then ban me. They may notice me get in the shorter queue for the other ride (do you tap in standby?)

This seems to be cheating the idea “wait like everyone else just not in line.” But the WDW site indicates you can “enjoy other attractions and rides” while you wait for the return time.

You are free to ride as many rides without DAS as you want. They are not keeping track.

This is how the system is designed and especially right now you shouldn't feel guilty about this.

A friend of ours is there right now, she is finding the wait times (which the DAS Return times are based off of) are way over inflated. For example, Rise of the Resistance was posted as 105 minutes and the actual wait time was only 45 minutes. That means that anyone getting a DAS Return Time was waiting an entire hour longer than anyone else. If it was a one off, it would be one thing, but she is finding it pretty consistent for the posted wait times to be at least 50% longer than the actual wait times.

I believe there is something in their literature that encourages guests to do just that. I tried looking it up, but I'm getting an error message for the page with DAS information.

Yes
This is the answer Disney gives on their website DAS FAQs page:
What can Guests do during their DAS virtual wait?

Guests utilizing DAS can experience many other attractions throughout Walt Disney World Resort during a DAS virtual wait, such as other rides, shows, concerts, parades and Character Greetings. They can also take a rest, get something to eat or shop.

You can do whatever you want while waiting for your DAS return time. This is when people usually go to the things that have a lower wait, for example, Mickey's Philharmagic or Laugh Floor.
