This is what some seem to be missing!
Both DH and I went up and picked out stuff to put on layaway but I was the one who gave the info needed to start the layaway--I didn't realize that he wouldn't be able to pick it up if he wasn't on the acct but then they didn't tell me he wouldn't be able and he was right there when we started it.
But that was weeks ago, and there's no telling whether it was the same clerk who helped you put it on layaway. I have to say that they're right to give the items ONLY to the person who put the things on layaway.

I'm glad they got their act together for you. Some people just don't think and there's no such things as judgment calls anymore.

I just had a rude experience at Wal-Mart. I was checking out using my debit card and leaning close to the pad, since I can't see well. The cashier gets this tone and says,"Are you BLIND or somethin'?" My friend who was with me just dropped her jaw. I looked up and said in a matter-of-fact tone,"Why yes."

-"Why don't you get glasses or somethin'?"

It was at night and I almost turned and asked if the optical dept was still open, but my sarcasm would've flown right over her head.

I get questions like that constantly, but rarely so rudely and with such ignorance. I was really shocked to get it from a store employee where I was shopping. As we were walking out, my friend said, "What an idiot."

He didn't lie--We live on post and I walk to all the stuff here on post--Walmart is off post and a ways up the road so he would have to drive me.

Don't you drive? If not, it's time to learn, especially with little ones. They are going to need to be driven places for many many years.

I don't see what this has to do with the OP.

I don't know if it was or not! And even if it was I wouldn't expect them to remember me! But I think if they ask you for your # to attach to the acct they should be willing to use the number in situations such as this! I don't believe the # is there so WallyWorld can call me up to find out how my day is going :rotfl:

They had my number and I had the receipt--A 2 second phone call could have verified anything they needed to know and prevented hard feelings!

Couldn't your husband have called you from the store? :confused3

He did that's how I knew what was going on but by the time he did they had already kicked him out of line! I called on the landline and asked to speak to the manager and he was the one who said he'd authorize it and get an apology,so when I called DH back on his cellphone that was when he told me the manager was right there during the whole thing and Walmart could keep the layaway!

I had my first heart attack while driving a few years ago so for safety reasons DH does all the driving.

I love Wal-Mart. They treat me better than any of the "mom-and-pops" in my town. It seems the small store owners here think you should be lucky they let you shop in their stores. I always get a friendly hello when I walk into Wal-Mart. Everyone is nice and courteous. I never have a problem returning anything (even without a receipt) and they have the best prices. If the employees are so unhaoppy working there, they are doing a great job at hiding it.

I'm glad all you see is the happy faces. Meanwhile, in the Wal-mart owned sweat shops and the homes of all the people they put out of business or fired for trying to unionize, not so many yellow smileys.

ETA: But I digress...

so you have to go and re-do all your Christmas shopping?

bummer.

How difficult would it be for me -- a complete stranger -- to give your number? If I were a dishonest casual aquaintance, it'd be very easy to do it. It'd also be very easy to have a conspirator answer the phone and verify that it was fine to pick up the items. Thieves are very techno-savy these days -- don't we hear such things every day? The store was 100% right to deny the layaway to anyone whose name doesn't appear on the ticket.

1. I will
2. Welcome to capitalism

I had a really horrible experience with Walmart layaway one year and would never use them again afterwards.

I put down a layaway in my name and we put my husband's name as a secondary person so that either one of us could pick it up. At least that's what they told us when we put it on layaway, and they did take both of our names.

Waited in line for about an hour, and then when I got to the register, they wouldn't allow me to pick it up because they said it was in my husband's name. Through all this, I was pretty calm. I'm a very quiet and laid back person. The clerk at the counter was really stressed and she just kept getting nastier and nastier with me as I tried to explain that both our names were on it. She called a manager and he came and threatened to throw me out of the store. I was stunned! The people behind me were even saying things like, "He is so out of line!" about the manager.

That was so humiliating. I ended up calling a district manager who gave me an apology. I never did see that manager in the store again, so hopefully he was fired or quit.

I had the receipt which had all the numbers on it--layaway acct # and customer id #--So yeah while some dishonest person could've tried to scam them I don't think that they'd have all that info

I can certainly see why they would only allow you to pick it up in the first place since it was your name on the receipt, regardless if your DH was with you when you put the stuff on layaway or not. It's not really the stores responsibility to tell the guests that are with the customers when putting things on layaway that they cannot pick up the layaway. I could find a layaway receipt in the parking lot with the purchasers info on it, go in and pay the balance and have someone else's stuff. Does that sound right to you? They have to protect the customers.

So you cancelled your layaway? Now you will have to go shop for all of the gifts again? How are you going to do that without taking the kids? It sounds like you bit off your nose to spite your face. The manager authorized the pick up after you called and made a fuss, so your DH should have just picked up the layaway.

This is what P/O DH! He was treated very poorly by the clerk("well I guess you won't get it then) and then starting a new transaction with the people behind him while he was still standing there and when he said "I'm still here" she told him I have other customers

I don't, either. She could have very valid reasons for not driving. My cousin couldn't drive because she had severe epilepsy. Maybe OP is legally blind or has some other disorder that prevents her from driving.

Actually, employees have access to that information. So, an employee could send in a person to pick up the layaway...use the 'call my wife, she has all of the pertinent info' (using an untraceable phone) the manager talks to the person with the infor and then they walk out with the layaway. They never would know how the information was obtained, they could not prove an employee was involved.

Believe me, I worked in customer service, this kind of stuff happens more often than you know. And btw, it's common for scammers to make a scene to get their way, mantioning tha they will never shop there again, etc...hoping the manager will just go along to avoid an irate customer.

They did the right thing, these policies are in place for a reason and I am sure you would understand that if you went in and your layaway was gone.
