-An apartment complex of 10 units

-2 coin operated washer/dryers

Is it rude for one person to use both washers and dryers at the same time and other people have to wait?
Or is it okay since they were both empty when person went down there/ first come first serve?

opinions please!

Totally first come first serve.

I go with not rude. How is the person who got there first gonna know when someone else is going to show up.

Both machines are open, I would use them both. What is the sense of leaving a machine empty "just in case".

Public washer/dryer means first come, first serve.

Rude is leaving your clothes in the washer/dryer for most of the day when the cycle is done.

No brainer. First come, first serve. Why would a person spend twice as long doing laundry on the off-chance that someone else might decide that they wanted to do laundry at the same time?!

If I had 2 loads of laundry to wash and dry, and both washers were not being used when I got there I would use them both. I wouldn't use one, and leave the other empty just because someone "might" come along and want to use one. I think things like that are first come first served.

What I think is rude, is if someone were to put their clothes in the washer and then leave it and not be back when it's done and someone else is waiting to use the machines.

I am thinking of the scenario where one person uses both washers, transfers that laundry to the dryer and then refills the washers again. It would be inconsiderate if they monopolize all the machines for several hours. Especially on a weekend when other people are home and waiting do to laundry.

This. At the apartment complex I was at, if the laundry was left for more than 15 minutes or so, you would find it on the counter dumped out. That's why I just took mine on base and paid by the pound to get it washed, dried, and folded.

Agree. Not rude to use both. Rude not to keep your laundry moving through as the cycles finish up.

Not rude. And I would actually say it's also not rude if they continue using both of them for multiple loads, as long as they have no reason to believe someone is waiting to use them. Now if someone shows up and you know they want to use the washer next, then I think it would be rude to put in another load at that point. It would be rude to continue to monopolize the machines if you know others are waiting, and it would be rude to leave your laundry in the machines for more than a few minutes once the cycle is done.

Prior to having a set in our home, if I had several loads to do, I never used the ones at our complex, and during our army days, I always did off post. I always drove to the nicest laundry mat and did all my loads at once. Back then, even with it just being the two of us, when I had all of his PT clothes and BDU's to do, that was one load all to itself. Add in the towels for the week, the sheets, my clothes, his clothes, whites - I could be looking at 5-7 loads. Took a heck of a lot less time at the laundry mat doing them all at once then to do 2 loads at a time (if both would be open) and even faster if you could only have one to use.

And I did say nicest, as the one closest to us down at Redstone AL, I wouldn't go to. It had far too many bullet holes in front window. I drove to the next closest one, which was about a 25 minute drive one way.

Not rude to use both if both are open and no one is waiting. However, if someone shows up, it would be polite to offer the second washer to the waiter after your current load is finished (even if you have additional loads).
