Is it possible to get two sets of fast passes in a day? Is the machine still not hooked up?

If you're first set of FP are early in the day, then it is a possibility.

I did it on May 22nd. Got a FP for RSR at about 9:30 for around 11:45 return. As we were walking into Cars Land around 12:15, I noticed that they still had people manning the RSR FP machines and the return time was 8:30, so I grabbed another one. They were gone by 1:00, and quite possibly right after I got one.

If your question is, can you get RSR FP and something else at the same time, the answer is yes. Also can have a FP from both parks at the same time.

Very similar story for my trip. Went to get FPs on the 15th May( thursday ). Got one for a late morning return and after riding tried for another just by chance and at 1230pm there were still FPs left available.

We do this all the time. Before you go on the ride with your first fast pass (once the ride return window has opened up), get the second pass. We usually wait until the second pass's return time is pretty late so that we can go on at night.

As of 2 weeks ago, they are still holding everyone at the Rope until opening. We are going tomorrow so I'll find out if it's still this way then.

Yep, we did this last summer, but this was while they were still forming a line. We got a return time for 9:35am, and I pulled another pass at 9:36 and got an evening time. I think it depends a lot on the park hours. If it's off season, the park will open later and close earlier, so you may not be able to get 2 FPs unless you get a very early return time and they haven't run out before your window opens.

This is something I didn't think of trying this week. I went for the FP's at 30-45 minutes after park opening each day because there was no line. However, two RSR fp's in one day and the possibility of a night ride is worth standing in line for.
