I posted this on the main Community Board as well, but thought I would see if other people would see it here:

I enjoyed watching the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton as much as anyone else. I loved the pagentry and I thought it was a great show!

But I have read some articles, and watched some shows, about Catherine's blue collar roots. Her mother's family were working class laborers and coal miners, and her own parents were flight attendants. They were nowhere near aristocratic, had no titles or ancestral estates, and up until a few days before the wedding, did not even have a family coat of arms.

Now, here in America, we LOVE a rags-to-riches story. There is something endearing that a great-great granddaughter of a coal miner is now "Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge".

Our own President came from very humble beginnings, a bi-racial child born in a segregated world, whose father abandoned him and his mother strugged to raise him while still a student. And our greatest President, Abraham Lincoln, was born in desparate poverty and only had a 2nd grade formal education.

Yes, we love stories of people who, with hard work, determination, faith in themselves and a bit of luck, were able to make their dreams come true.

But I've heard much criticism of the Middleton's, especially of Catherine's mother and maternal grandmother, calling them "social climbers" and accusing them of not knowing their proper place in society.

Is the class system still as powerful and restrictive in the UK? Or is this just a few "sour grapes"?

While I'm not going to go into the whole social class thing - because I'll just probably end up ranting :rotfl: - I don't think Kate Middleton came truly from "rags".

I'm sure I read in the newspaper yesterday that her parents are in fact millionaires and that her parents spent £250,000 to book the entire Goring Hotel before the wedding on Friday.

So, maybe take the "rags to riches" with a pinch of salt :goodvibes

But personally, I don't care how wealthy or not her family are :) She and Prince William make an amazing couple and the whole ordeal makes me proud to be British :thumbsup2

I totally agree. The Middletons mix in society circles, the children all were privately educated for £30,000 a year each and they have a very successful party planning business - not exactly working class!

I would take the media with a pinch of salt.

Unfortunately, I think anyone who married into the Royal family would be labelled a 'social climber'. The Middletons were 'commoners' (they are not peers) but Kate is definitely not 'rags' to riches. I think the class system is alive and kicking in the UK - you only have to look at some of our public schools to see it in action. JMHO.

I agree, it's not realy a case of rags to riches.....but I think Prince William and Kate make a lovely couple..... some people just like to see the bad in others!!!!

I agree - and if William had married an 'equal' then the media would have labelled it an arranged marriage instead of a love match. I think they make a lovely couple and hope they have a long and happy marriage ahead.

Us Brits really aren't bothered about social classes anymore it's just when it comes to the Royal Family it's a whole different story! The Media also like to make a big deal out of social classes aswell.

& about the Middletons being 'social climbers' is so silly! I think they're millionaires now anyways, but they do work very hard! All the articles about them being desperate for Kate/Catherine to marry Prince William are aload of rubbish! & articles about her setting out to marry William are also so untrue! :rotfl:

Obviously if we were living 100 years ago William wouldn't be allowed to marry a 'commoner' like Catherine so i suppose there's that aspect to it, it's kind of big deal in that way because Catherine doesn't have 'royal' (is that the term?) blood unlike the late Diana (William's mother).

By definition, she's a commoner, but by most people's standards, she and her family are toffs. I'm a monarchist and I don't subscribe to the 'social climber' accusations, but that's it in a nutshell. :)
