Hi everyone. We will be traveling with our trailer from the Denver area to FW the end of Oct to Nov 6. We are a little worried about the weather along the way. Has anyone traveled that direction during that time of year?
We are new to RVing and this will be our first trip to the FW campground. We are really excited about it!!

Sorry, I can't help you with the travel route from Denver to Orlando.
However, I can understand your excitement for your first stay at the Fort.
Let me just tell you, if you think you are excited now, just wait until you start planning future visits. You will know what to expect and it is even more exciting.
Have a great first visit.

I'd say it depends on what you want to see aloing the way, or what you want to avoid. Do you want interstates or to avoid them? Do you want big cities or out of the way tourist attractions? There are a lot of choices for you to sort out. Try Mapquest.com for some general routing suggestions, mileages, etc. I doubt the weather will be much of a factor, although strange events coud occur anywhere, anytime. However you get to the Fort, I know you will enjoy it. How long can you stay? I don't know whether you have been to WDW before or not, but in addition to spending time in the Parks, reserve some down time for relaxing at the Fort. And be sure to post often on your choice and progress of your trip.

We've made the trip from Denver to FW several times in the fall/winter and I wish to pass on these words of wisdom. Check the weather often before you leave. The weather in eastern Colorado and western Kansas is your largest worry. We've encountered icy roads and blizzards which are definately no fun with a camper. Our route is normally to KC, St Louis, Nashville, Atlanta, and then finally Orlando. One more thing would be to check the weather again before coming home (we hit a blizzard one year and spent two days in a Kansas motel waiting for the roads to reopen). I-70 is shorter, but if the weather won't allow a trip that direction you can always take I-25 to I-40, but Raton pass can have difficult weather too that time of year. Smaller highways can be more difficult in winter driving conditions than the interstates as states concentrate plowing the interstates, plus if you find yourself in the ditch your chances of help arriving is much higher on the interstates.

Hope this helps and if you need additional info, just ask.

Almost forgot to mention...if you aren't very experienced driving the RV in traffic, then I STRONGLY suggest planning your passages through the major cities during off hours (middle of the day or middle of the night) and this goes double for Atlanta! Build in some driving breaks and remember the goal is to arrive safely, even if it means arriving a little late. Make sure you have your FW reservation documents where you can reach them upon arrival at WDW, you will need it for entry at the parking toll plaza and at the FW security shack.

As you approach the Magic Kingdom toll plaza use the far right guest lane. The right turn toward FW is just beyond the plaza, but also keep in mind that WDW buses use the two far right lanes, so merge right carefully.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We have been to WDW twice before. this will be our first visit to the fort. We are thinking of staying on the major highways. A visit to Jack Daniels in TN and Andersonville in GA. I hear the campground at stone mtn, ga is also nice. We wanted to add a day at the end of our stay but it was booked for the prem sites. We arrive 11/1 and depart 11/6.

Keep checking for that extra day.
Check everyday.
Chances are good that you may get your wish.

You'll LOVE the Fort!!
We are going to be there the same time as you!
We were able to add 2 extra nights (so we can attend Mickey's Xmas Party  ) so keep trying!
We are driving from Ontario and have done it before with tricky weather, just take your time and stop when needed!
We are at the Fort til Nov 9th!!

Left PA beginning of July. On the road 2 1/2 months.

After running around the Mountains States and leaving Coloradro Springs we headed for an overnight (KOA) stop in Salina KS, Rt 70

Then 135 south, off 70. Our target was Branson, MO (man that is a neat town). We left Branson went through Memphis with a stop at Fulton MS. A super Army Corp of Engineers RV park. Water, elec $18/ night. Senior pass $9 per night.

Next stop Chathoochee FL. another overnighter at an Army Corp of Engineers RV park. RT 10 & 90 (Panhandle). From Chatahoochee, 5 1/2 hrs to DIS.

Close to 7,200 miles to see the MOUSE ! ! !

Boy oh boy! You have a pretty long trip ahead of you but with good planning it can be a fun adventure. You said you plan to stay on the main highways so I will explain my trip preferences. First, I really like to use only interstate highways. I think its less stressful to avoid traffic and dangerous intersections in towns and cities. I think you get better gas mileage when you don't start and stop so much. I feel better making smooth steady progress on a long trip with an RV. Get the book "The Next Exit". This book is very easy to use and it tells you everything available at every exit on every interstate hw. Its perfect for RVing because all RV friendly gas stations and such are listed in red letters. At a glance I can easily plan my next gas stop without worrying if I can get the RV in and out ok. This removed all the stress of getting gas. You can also see where all the rest areas, Walmarts and other facilities are along your route. Finally, I like to get to the Fort as quickly as I can. A week is not enough time there, you will want more time. I like to plan any stopover at KOA.com. I will choose their campgrounds which are within a mile or two of the hw, I don't want to waste time off the main route trying to find a campground. KOA is always pretty good to very good places to spend the night. Its easy to search their website and plan all your overnight campsites. Have a safe, fun trip!

If ya need anything while you are in TN holler I live 10 min from Jack Daniels.

YellowXterra thanks for the offer. Have you ever taken a tour of JD? have you seen the KOA at Manchester TN? We are thinking of stopping there on the way.
wecamp Disney thanks for the book tip. We were really worried about were to get gas. Our trailer is a 27ft and with the sway bar on it is hard to make tight turns.
john59 are the army corp RV parks for military only?
Photofreak& lucky thanks for the encouragement. I will keep checking. We have plans for the F&W fest and the parks but really want to spend time at the fort.
I just Love- Love- all the help we are getting. It just ADDs to the excitement!

I live 10 minutes from the KOA. :lmao:

It's a typical KOA, pretty nice. Right on the interstate.

The COE parks are for everyone. recreation.gov

As for JD, it is a nice tour, lots of walking and stairs. If you're expecting samples, don't, it's a dry county. Has been and seems like it always will be. :confused3
