I am looking for the opinions of anyone who has traveled from the North East down to FL with a camper. We are coming from Maine in October and have been checking out the maps. I was wondering what would be best to do. We plan on taking 84-81-64 and then back to 95. That way we avoid NY, WA, and Baltimore. My question is would it be better to hop onto CT-15, I91 to 691 back to 84 or just stay on 84 the whole time until we hit 81? Does getting off 84 save any time or avoid anything major? Hartford, maybe? What are your opinions? Thanks for the help.:flower3:

We just drove 84-81-64-95 on our recent trip to Hilton Head. We've taken this route many times, often 84-81-77-26-95 and feel it's much less stressful than 95 through DC. We even got stuck in a traffic jam in DC at 3 am! Plus this route is beautiful. Once you're south of Richmond it's not too bad. If you decide to get back on 95 before Richmond, be sure to take 295 around the city.

We were at FW in April. We live in PA, right off of 84. We took 84-81-77-26-95. We have driven south several times using just 95 and my husband didn't want to be stuck in that 95 traffic with the trailer. We didn't get on 95 until SC (then got stuck in traffic for an hour due to an accident!). The above route was just as fast, and much more scenic, with the beautiful mountains in VA and NC and all the trees and flowers in bloom. It was just what we needed coming from snowy PA in April!

Hello fellow Mainah!
We usually do that way 84-81 to ? -95 going through New York, PA and ending up just before Richmond. REALLY less stressful as we just drove through Washington using 95 and even driving in the wee hours of the morning it was not enjoyable. And we usually get tied up in traffic due to an accident which also happened.
So enjoy your trip and avoid 95 going through/around Baltimore and Washington!

OH yes....and stay on 84...all that crisscrossing in CT doesn't save you any time.

I believe the route you are looking for is 83!

This is the route we take also! :drive:

I live in De. so we use RT301 thru MD. & Va. and get back on 95 @ exit 104, there is a Flying J there so we will top off with fuel. Then stay on 95 till Fl. yes we have hit traffic but always @ different spots.
We are going to Maine in August and I planned on useing 84 across Ct, and into Mass. what would be best after that?

I would take 84-90(Mass Pike)-495N-95N It is easy driving. Where in Maine are you going?

We are about a half hour from Rockport. It's a really nice area. Have fun!

Well just so that you will have one non conforming opinion I will give you mine (remember you get what you pay for so this isnt worth all that much) We have travelled from New Brunswick Canada to WDW (about 5 hours north east of Bangor Maine) 8 or 9 times and have tried a number of combinations but our favorite route and our quickest is 95 all the way. I personally think the traffic while certainly heavy is overated from a problem perspective. We tow a 32ft TT and have not had any issues, we usually take two days coming north and 2.5 days going south because we leave after the kids get off school and this gets us around DC before rush hour on the second day. Hope this is helpful.

When we went without the trailer that is the way we went but I was concerned about towing through NY and DC. But you have liked it better, huh? Well, I guess we will have to figure out what we are going to do.

Don't forget that you can not take propane thru the tunnels in Balt. I have seen people do it but a lot depends on the officer that may or may not be @ the tolls. I have also seen propane bottels sitting on the side after the toll booths to the right, like peopls just left them there to continue. The way around it is to take Rt. 695 east(shortest way) to the Key Brige then meets 95 south past Balt.

Oh, thanks for the tip. I think we are going to end up getting back on 95 in Richmond. So we should be all set.

Hi,
My husband is a Retired truck driver and Motor coach operator and was dying for me to type a response to your question so here goes...

comming from Maine the shortest route is going to be going right down 95 he can skirt you around New York take 95-S to 87-287-N to 287-S and that will put you back on I-95 in New Jersey or better known as the New Jersey turnpike he says it is not bad to drive sounds scarier than it is (ya know New Jersey) we are from Upstate so we also are not fond of the city (NYC) follow I-95 into Maryland and stay right on it you will be comming into 495 take I-495 East&South it automatically hooks back into I-95-S ,,if you are pulling a Trailer he says this is ALOT easier route to go Much less hilly ,,, the other way you have posted you are going way to far west to go south...hope this helps this is from someone who has spent 37 years traveling these routes!:thumbsup2

Can you husband offer a suggestion from Buffalo, NY to WDW? We're also towing a TT. We've been told to take 90-79-19-77-26-95-4.

Take I-90 East from Buffalo to exit 48 --(Batavia)---Route 63 South --ToI-390 South to Route 17 East to Route 15 South ---to I-270 South ---I-495 South and that automatically ties to I-95 South run it all the way down to -I-4 WELCOME TO DISNEY!

This is much less Hilly than the way you were going and it is 1203 miles to Disney this way ....and alot easrier to haul a TT....Hope this Helps! :thumbsup2
