Round Trip Airfare

I always had an impression that Round-Trip Airfare is more economical than two One-Way airfares. However, upon checking aircanada.com and westjet.com, it seems there are no "savings" on a round-trip ticket. Basically the total price is the sum of the two one-way tickets.

DW refuses to fly from Buffalo. So we have no choice except to get a flight from Toronto to Orlando. Anyone had done this before? Fly from Toronto to Orlando on Airline A, and return from Orlando to Toronto on Airline B? Any issues?

You shouldn't have a problem. I've flown NWA into the US and United back into Canada on the same trip.

Doubt you'll have any problems, pretty normal these days.
DH travels for business quite a bit, and can fly down on AC but come back on Delta, USAir, you name it (even vice versa!).

We've also done a WDW trip - down on AC and back on WestJet - and no trouble. In this market, I think it's expected you'd want to make the most of your hard earned dollar!

Thank you for the replies. Yes, I plan to get whatever the cheapest (and less hassle) for our family.

I was so surprised that the airfare has increased so much for Mar 2008. This January we travelled to Orlando and a round-trip costs less than $350 per person. For coming March, it is $968 for a round trip between Toronto and Orlando!!!

My perception was that round-trip used to be cheaper, for example 25,000 Aeroplan miles for one way, but 40,000 for round-trip.

Now that seems not the case for now. A return trip costs you exactly = Trip 1 (Toronto -> Orlando) + Trip 2 (Orlando -> Toronto).

Are you sure you can't persuade DW to fly out of BUffalo
The savings will be substabtial....and if you live in Toronto ,its only an hour or two drive (as well as the more comfortable,easy to use airport....compared to that disaster we call Pearson .

I agree with the above poster I would try to convince your other to go from Buffalo. You will save a ton on money and the airport is much easier to fly out of then Toronto. I have done both and I will never do Toronto again.

That's exactly what I though but was proven wrong also. Had enough aeroplan points for 3 1/2 flights and figured it would be more economical to purchase the 4th flight and save the airmiles for next trip, but it wasnt.

Got the 3 1/2 tickets free then purchased one way return from Orlando to Calgary (same flight on AC) on Expedia for less than $300 (way less than AC website).

It used to be more economical to purchase round trip tickets (if the round trip included a Saturday night stay -- to prevent most business travellers from getting the lower priced fare. Most airlines have eliminated these restrictions several years ago. Essentially all air travel on a scheduled flight is priced using one way travel. Overall, the price hasn't changed dramatically.


There is no problem using different airlines for the return trip, than the one you used to fly to your destination. I have done this frequently.


I know you don't want to fly out of Buffalo, but for March Break travel Buffalo currently has return air fares for $366 per person (considerably less than the $968 you are seeing out of Toronto. For a family of four this translates to a savings of $2400 (if you don't like to drive, you could hire a driver to take you to Buffalo for less than $2400).
