ARGH! All of my roses that I moved into containers and into my front full-sun flower bed are all showing signs of black-spot again. I am so frustrated with them! I absolutely LOVE roses but I'm about ready to pitch em.

I hate using pesticides and really try to garden organically but I think I am going to have to bend my rule if I'm going to have nice roses. Task this week, pull off all the infected leaves and SPRAY SPRAY SPRAY!

Mary so sorry to hear you are having a problem with black spot. It's a nasty fungus.

For 20 years I grew roses. For years this garden was beautiful. As the years passed I spent less and less time in this garden and it was starting to show. Two years ago I dug them all out. I got tired of dealing with bugs and black spot. I do miss the aroma of roses when I walk out the door, and there isn't a flower in the garden that can compare to their beauty.

In my area rose gardens need lots of chemicals, TLC and fertilizers. I planted perennials and bulbs where the roses were. No I don't get the same high when they flower. I do need to deal with an occasional cut worm, but all and all my gardening has become a lot easier.

When I visit the garden center, I always stop to see the roses and whats new. Beauty never comes easy, it takes lots of work. Oh how I wish, but alas I just don't have the time and patience I had 20 years ago.

Sorry about the black spot Mary, that must be very frustrating! I hope you can get it under control. :)

Here is a page that has some organic sprays for black spot
I have ordered stuff from this company, they are pretty good
Garden's Alive

I have the exact same problem and no matter what I do I can't seem to get rid of it. I love roses, the smell of roses, the beauty of roses and no matter how much TLC, pruning and talking (yes, I talk to my plants, no one else listens, LOL) it doesn't seem to help.

Read Alex's link. One of the things I have read dozens of times:
don't get the foliage wet??????????????? Now how can you keep it dry when it rains???????????

I don't think they mean when it rains, obviously you can't help that, I think they mean when you water.

At a rose seminar I went to (unwillingly) they highly recommended rose called Carefree. They said it really is carefree.

I love roses, but they are a ton of work. My mom has raised peace roses forever....and hers are works of art.

I go over there and cut some when I'm having a rose fit.

I have a few of the old masters roses....all floribundas....and they hold up pretty well.....but during wet summers, I'm a gonner between the black spot and the fungus....

Good luck! I know how frustrating this can be!

Thanks for the replies buds. I really don't want to get rid of them. I have yanked some that were really not growing well and didn't have a special story with it. The rest of them are sentimental though. I have a hard time getting rid of things given to me or bought in honor of something or someone! I have a new resolve, especially since my boys gave me a new rose for Mothers Day. I will spend as much time as needed to get these babies into acceptable shape for my garden. They don't have to be show perfect but I would like them to be somewhat disease free and still have some leaves on them.

Thanks for the link Alex. I've received their catalog in the mail but haven't really looked at it that close. I'll definitely check it out.

Thought you might be interested in the roses I have.

Graham Thomas, Lavaglut, Polar Star, Polar Ice, Fragrant Memories, Lavender Dreams, Joseph's Coat, Chrystalline, Zepherine Droughan, Just Joey x2, Sunset Celebration, and my new Disneyland Rose. I also have 2 more that were here when we moved in but don't know what they are.

I know roses are hard to grow. Stick with it. You seem determined enough. We have faith in ya.

Wish I could grow roses..... roses and tulips.

Welcome ,flrose!! :)

Talking to your plants is a good thing, we all do it! :) Don't we....fess up Buds! ;) :)

Wow, Mary, you have so many roses!! I think the Joseph's Coat is the new one that Dixie has planted this year. :)

Snowwark: I'm pretty sure that is the one Dixie said she planted. I planted 2 in front of the shed at our old house in honor of my oldest son Joseph. The waste oil container in the shed accidentally spilled and oil drained into the base of both roses. Needless to say the plants didn't really appreciate it. They both came back but one was in pretty bad shape so I tossed it. The other survived the move and is still going strong but plagued with blackspot. They are such beautiful roses, wonderful fragrance and a beautiful coral/pink color. I'm planning on posting pictures of everything as soon as my webpage is fixed.

That's pretty good that one of them survived the oil bath, and the move.

I hope your webpage is fixed soon, Mary, I look forward to seeing the pics! :) If you have something you want posted, just PM me. :)
