Rose and Crown

My granddaughter (11) and I (never mind lol), ate at the Rose&Crown at noon on June 28,2007. we loved it! The fruit and cheese plate was nice. We didn't like everything, but that was ok. It included 2 slices of apple, a small bunch of red grapes, Irish cheddar and some type of mushroom cheese, jellied onions, walnut bonbons, and a pastry with Stilton cheese. We shared the tea-time chicken and a salad with Stilton cheese. Loved it! The chicken was excellent, especially the leeks and musturd sauce- not too strong, just right! It was perfect for us girls>:cutie:

Oh good. I was a little nervous about the chicken. But it sounds like you really enjoyed it. I will give it a try. Thanks!

Midge, you did a better job of explaining the new fruit and cheese plate than I did. I'm glad you enjoyed your meal there. Perhaps if we had not enjoyed previous versions of that appetizer so much more we would not have been disappointed.

This thread contains a picture of the fruit and cheese plate before the latest change (not my pictures).

Even this version is missing the large strawberries.:sad2:

The cheese with mushrooms was a Brie if I remember correctly.....hardly a British cheese. Of course it doesn't help that I dislike Brie and yet it was on three different cheese plates we had this past trip. Someone at WDW likes it!

Our DIL had the salad with the Stilton dressing and enjoyed it very much too.

'spotted dick, jam rolly poly, treacle sponge'?:confused3 OK, please speak Americanized English. What the heck are these and how do you make them. I'm always up for something new.

Spotted Dick is a steamed suet sponge pudding full of raisins, sultanas (golden raisins in USA) and currants. It is hot and eaten with hot custard.
Jam Roly Poly is a version of the same suet sponge that is rolled out, spread with raspberry jam (jelly in USA), rolled up and steamed. It is also eaten with custard.
Treacle Sponge is a sponge pudding (like a warm pound cake) cooked in a bowl with golden syrup at the bottom. It is also usually steamed and eaten with custard.

Then there are things like rice pudding, apple pies, trifles, and lots of other cold desserts.

For main courses the mashed potato at R&C is nothing like real English mash. We don't have rib eye steak - we have roast beef. You might also like Toad in the Hole (English sausages cooked in batter), We also have curries (which I have never managed to find in Florida!).

The R&C is not typical English food - not in the menu nor in the way it is cooked. I've never seen a cheese and fruit platter for starters - we would have cheese at the end of the meal after the dessert!

Ok, I didn't know what suet was, so I googled it, and here's what I found on wikipedia -
Suet (/ˈsuː.ɪt/) is raw beef or mutton fat, especially the hard fat found around the loins and kidneys. It melts at about 21°C (70°F). It consists mostly of saturated fat.

Surely that can't be what you're talking about, or is it? :scared1:

Yep, but there is a vegetable suet available also, which is slightly healthier. It sounds really gross, but it actually tastes great in the food.

:rotfl2: Ok, Reggie, I'll have to take your word for that one.

I know it's kind of hard to believe. It was just a way of using everything you could from the animal. I have a packet of Atora Suet (biggest brand) in the pantry, the ingredients are beef suet (85%) and wheat flour. Tasty huh? To be honest I've never really thought about it, cultural thing I guess :confused3

I'm sure that R&C could use the vegetable suet version and come up with a yummy stew with dumplings, or some of the great desserts already mentioned. My favorite would have to be jam (jelly) roly poly. It is a bit of a crime that they can't get more "British" in the menu, it's kind of throwing it's tea in the harbor and becoming American!!
