I am flying in to LAX next week with DD14 and DS16. My sister and her family, who live right near Disneyland, will be picking us up. She thought it would be fun to have an early dinner at an iconic LA spot. She wants us to choose between:

Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles
Pink's
Philippe's

My kids have seen them all on Food Network TV shows and can't decide. Which would you choose and why?

Don't know about Roscoe's or Phillippe's but Pink's was a big disappointment. The hot dog itself had a very think outer casing that was kinda difficult to bite through and the chili was a bit watery with a bitter taste. Definitely not worth a visit.

Philippe's would be best although some might find the neighborhood "rough". And then there is also Cole's to consider - both claim to have invented the French dip. I prefer Cole's - only because of a hidden speakeasy in the back of the place, The Varnish, which makes killer cocktails. Philippe's is more diner like, Cole's more dive bar like.

Roscoe's is meh and Pink's is a hot dog - a good hot dog, but just a hot dog.

Also might want to consider Langer's - famous for their pastrami and rightly so. Also in what many would consider a "rough" part of town. But worth it!!!

Between those three Roscoes. Food isnt amazing but its so LA iconic that if
youre looking fo LA iconic you cant lose. and Cole's is better than Philippe's.

I second Langers. They close early (4PM) but for food (deli food) you cant get
better. Its more New York than LA but its a LA landmark with great food.

I haven't had Phillipes, but I love both Roscoe's and Pink's!

Hands down Phillipes is the best. It is a historic landmark across from Olvera Street and Union Station downtown LA.

Found a nice little review on Coles and Phillippes http://www.tabletalkatlarrys.com/in...ppe-vs-coles-a-down-town-french-dip-showdown/

Just reporting back...we ended up at Philippe's for an early dinner. My kids' second choice was Roscoe's. Wish we had more time and could have done them all!

How did you enjoy your meal? I would have recommended Phillippes because that is the only one I have been to. Did you enjoy your trip there?

I really enjoyed my french dip beef sandwich. I got it "wet" so it had lots of au jus...yummy. The side dishes (potato & macaroni salad) were just ok. Some in our group had caesar salads (very good) and the pork french dip (my sister thought it was even better than the beef). The actual restaurant was cool with the sawdust on the floor, the history and everything. I would go back again if I had the chance.

Even more fun were our two days at Disneyland and California Adventure! We LOVED both parks!

I've never had Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles, but I've had Philippe's and Pinks.

IMO, I was not that impressed with Pinks, to me it was just another hot dog. Meh. I don't get the hype.

Philippe's is great. Love their sandwiches. The only gripe about the place is that there is usually a large line, and its little over priced for what you get.

Philippe's. It's not dicey but its not the burbs. Jeez.

Or, go to downtown to the pantry.

We always do Pink's. I go for the 3 dog night, which is 3 hot dogs, chili and cheese, wrapped in a tortilla. I love it, although it is a little heavy. I think the location is pretty awesome too considering its in Hollywood so you get the whole "Hollywood" vibe while you're there. My wife and I are going to do Roscoe's next, we just have to find the time.
