As many of you know, I rope-drop nearly every Sunday and occasionally during the week. Since the launch of ROTR, I've noticed some big differences in how park attendance has changed and how Disney has approached the park opening. Notably:

• Guests are allowed into the park and up to the hub for rope drop at about 7:30. The ropes come down at around 7:48 (for an 8:00 opening) and guests are allowed into the park proper at about 7:50 - ten minutes early. I presume this is done in part to disperse crowds so that the rush for a ROTR BG is diffused rather than concentrated in one area.

• At the right of the hub, there are two ropes – one about 50 feet long and the other about five feet. Usually both come down but for some reason CMs informed us moments before RD yesterday that the shorter rope wouldn’t be down. Why they chose to cram us all – a larger than usual crowd -- into a tighter area seems senseless to me. I presume and hope that they have reasons.

• Typically it takes me 35 minutes to drive to the park and then another 10 – 15 once I’ve reached the parking structure. Over my past three visits it’s taken 45 minutes to go from the freeway exit to the park gates. One of the reasons is that few security lines are open. Indeed, yesterday there was a single line open and the queue stretched all the way back to the PS escalators. It broke into two lines a short time later but it still felt like a poor choice, given that everyone knows and expects large crowds.

• Once into the park, crowds seem OK. But the first hour – from structure arrival to inside the park – feels poorly managed. Hopefully Disney ramps up performance – opens more security lines and open park gates earlier to do away with lines that stretch nearly to the DCA entrance – or crowds mad for ROTR subside. It seems that neither is likely in the next few months.

I have park maps for anyone that would like a pair.

Nice pics! Since you didn’t get a RotR boarding group the past the weeks I would show up earlier on Sunday. As for park maps, if they change them to a different scene please let me know as I would love them!

We head there sooon, so excited. So is it still best to get there very early (like 5-6am) to be able to get a boarding pass? It is all so confusing on if we need to be there super early in order to get a boarding pass.

Actually, I totally forgot to mention: yes, I did get a BG for ROTR - 46. I didn’t want to post any ride spoilers so I guess I simply overlooked it. When I go to the park during the week, I usually plan to leave at around 1:00 so I can get back to LA and get some work done.

At 12:15 I saw that they were up to BG 30 so I began to feel that I may actually have a chance. After that, the BGs seemed to click up quickly and I was in line for it by around 12:30. Last night I happened to notice that BGs made it all the way up to 100+. Hopefully that continues to happen.

In short, I loved it. It’s cool that it’s as much an experience as a ride. I also like that it lasts so long. For other rides (Pirates excepted), the ratio of wait-time to ride-time is usually very high. Think Peter Pan, for example (although in my case that doesn’t really apply). I’m an unmitigated extrovert, met a nice young lady in line and we began to chat. She invited me to ride with her and we compared notes afterwards. We both thought it was excellent. Also, we both actively avoided knowing anything about it so our experiences were fresh and untainted. I hope to ride it again soon, although I won’t be heartbroken if I don’t get to go this Sunday.

Excellent observations.

We saw Merida for the first time Saturday and my girls and I were FREAKING out. We started coming to Disneyland in June, and this is our tenth visit and the first time we’ve seen her. Is she new to the parks???? Or have we just missed her????

Seems to me I’ve seen her a few times before. I understand that rare characters like Wendy or Jiminy Cricket aren’t seen often. I was at DW about ten years ago and didn’t understand why people were excited when he (JC) came out.

I think that as long as you’re in the park by 8:00, you’ve got just as good a chance as the folks who arrived at 5:00. Since they allow guests into the park earlier than usual (about 7:35 or thereabouts), there doesn’t seem to be a compelling reason to arrive as early as 5:00 or even 6:00. I think the folks that come from far and wide, however, think differently.

It was an awesome weekend for rare characters! Merida and Wendy in the same weekend!

Whoa! That BLAB board photo is awesome! :)
Thanks. I've never had all top ten scores and have no wish to. There's a guy that used to come a lot and did that all the time. It always felt obsessive to me so if it ever comes close to happening, I'll use a fake name -- often "Buz" or "Jim," who's a friend that's also pretty good at Buzz.

I am so happy you got to ride! Like you I have avidly been avoiding spoilers. I still have 9 months before I get a chance.

Love all the pictures ! Happy to hear you finally got a BG for ROTR and you got to ride it ! ! ! Love the score board picture..... that's fabulous

I feel your pain. Week long siblings trip in Aug. And possibly a single sat. in July for my father's birthday. But his health isn't great, so we don't know if the ride will be too much for him at the time so I'm not planning on getting to ride until Aug.
