My daughter just had a root canal this morning. She was scheduled to have it done in July but the tooth was giving her a lot of pain. He gave her Vicodin and an antibiotic yesterday. She had also taken an antibiotic about a week ago--z pak. She had the root canal at about 9:30 this morning. She didn't take the Vicodin this morning since she was driving herself. When she came home she was in a lot of pain and took the Vicodin then. Is it normal for her to be in a lot of pain afterwards? We thought doing the root canal would get rid of most of the pain. She tried to call the dentist but they closed at 12.
Thanks!

I have had it done and yes you can have pain after the procedure. Take the pain pills, it will really help. I hate root canals.

I had a root canal done 10 days ago and am still in pain. My dentist went on vacation so I'm toughing it out until Monday. I can't take any type of pain relievers because of other medication I take. Lucky me.

Oh my goodness!!! That can't be normal to be in pain that long. Bless your heart. I hope he can do something to make you feel better Monday. I won't report this to my daughter. She would die thinking she was going to be in pain that long. Please tell me that isn't normal.

Ask her if it's the actual tooth that is painful (like she had before the procedure). More than likely it's the tissue around the tooth that is sore from the trauma. When they do a root canal they remove the nerve so the actual tooth can't hurt anymore. Tell her to take the vicodin, though, it really helps.

DD just spent 3 days in the hospital because of an abscess. She had her root canal done the day after she got out, she was taking pain meds for a few days after that.

Wow, I guess I'm lucky. I had a root canal done a couple of weeks ago. It was a bit sore after, but nothing I needed pain medication for. After a few days days it was fine.

my mouth and jaw hurt for about a week after my root canal. the tooth was fine, but having all that done to my mouth is the part that hurt. especially since it was the last molar on the left side, the opposite side the dr. sits on.

i would keep taking the pain medicine for at least a few days.

I'm another lucky one. After a root canal, I don't even need to take a motrin, tylenol, etc.

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

I have had many root canals and never needed to take anything for pain of any type afterwards. There was really no pain during or after it--before yes...but not after!

I have had my share of root canals. Most went smoothly with little pain. Unfortunately a few were difficult and painful. I hope she is just dealing with residual pain and feels better in the morning! :)

So feel for her. I've had 2 done in the last year. Number 1 was a cracked bottom tooth, took advil and rested when I got home. The next day went on my yearly outlet shopping marathon.

Number 2 was an on an infected abcess on a top tooth. It was a multiple week ordeal. I was popping advil/oxycotin for almost 3 weeks. It was days before I was even able to chew on that side because of all the prodding.

Hopefully, she'll have an experience much more like root canal #1. That one I would do over again in a heartbeat.

I just had a root canal a few weeks ago for an abscessed tooth. The pain before the root canal was horrendous. I was popping tylenol and motrin like candy. I did have pain for a week afterwards, but it wasn't anywhere near the severity from before.

Had a root canal done a few years ago. Dentist gave me Loritab to take before I left the office and then more to take later. I stayed sick for 24 hours (from the Loritab) and in a lot of pain.

Had my second one this past Monday, different dentist. After the root canal, I went to work and worked most of the day. I did leave early because it was starting to bother me a little. I came home and took Aleve. No problems since.

My jaw and gums are sore but there is no pain at all.

I just had my first root canal in March. I did have some pain afterwards, but it was pain in the teeth and gum near the site of the root canal. It was my next-to-last molar and was deep. The pain lasted about two days, but was nowhere near the pain I was having before the root canal. I think the pain was related to the activity and heavy drilling.

If she has more pain or it lasts longer than a day or two I would say she should go back to the dentist!

I just suffer thru the pain and enjoy the vics when Im dissing

My root canal was 14yrs ago. I was in death pain because it was infected. So yea, I lived on pain meds for a few weeks.

I go in TWICE for the root canal since he was unable to do it in one appointment.

Same here. Most root canals have been no big deal but I have had two where I have had a lot of pain and needed to take antibiotics and pain killers due to infections. I am not a pill popper at all and usually will try to just suck up any pain. For the last root canal I had I was popping vicoden every chance I got. I was in excrutiating pain before and after. Tell you daughter to keep taking her antibiotics and hopefully she will get past the pain soon.

I've had two and never had any pain after. I did bite into something hard on the tooth after the last procedure and felt like I bruised it, but it wasn't too bad. The dentist always offers pain meds but I've never needed to fill the prescription. I think it all depends on how traumatic the procedure was and how deep they had to go. I hurt more when they put the crown on (and that is supposed to be the easy part!).

It is unusal to be in pain for 10 days. Usually a couple of days with pain meds. I feel sorry for the other lady. Is it possible to go off your reg. meds. soo you can take you pain pills.
