So I was at the dentist today for a toothache and it turns out I need a root canal. :scared1: We leave for Disney next week so I am going with my antibiotic and 800mg Motrin in hand! They couldn't do the root canal today because...long story with insurance so I have to wait till June. I told my husband he's going to have to carry me around as well as our kids :scared:

I'm sure with the med's you will be feeling a bit better in a couple days. Pack some baby oragiel just incase to help reduce some onsite pain.:thumbsup2

Thanks everyone. I'm trying not to think about it and just focus on our trip. Of course we have ADR's for every day so hopefully I won't have to eat mush all week.

Personally, I don't think you might be able to wait until June until you get your root canal. Tooth pain can be really uncomfortable and if the nerves in the teeth are really flared up, it can be almost unbearable. If I was you, I would do everything possible to get it done before your trip. You don't want to spend a vacation in pain, it could ruin your vacation. If you go for a root canal with a specialist "periodontist" they can usually do the root canal in an hour or so and the nerves will be destroyed and your pain relieved. I don't want to sound like a downer but I've had them and know how persistent and uncomfortable the pain can be. Good luck, Linda

Good luck!! I hope you are able to go to Disney painfree. I would take the 800 mg Motrin around the clock (take it with food...otherwise you will have an upset tummy!)....but taking it every 8 hours, you will get it good in your system and you won't have to be worried about becoming in pain.

Hope all goes well!!

I so agree with this post but I understand the insurance game too. My advice would be to save your prescribed pain killers in case of emergency while on your trip. The pain may get worse so try to control it with over the counter medication now. Then you will have the strong stuff while on vacation if the pain becomes worse. Dental abscesses are strange things. I have seen people with the side of their faces completely swollen from them and I have seen people put off getting a root canal and the abscess goes away. Hopefully you will be fine until you get back. I hope you have a great trip!

What do they do with the tooth between now and June?

I have never heard of putting off a root canal. Either you need a root canal in which case it needs to be done yesterday, or you don't need a root canal.

Also you should not take an airplane for at least three days after a tooth is filled, so the root canal needs to be done even sooner.

I agree w/ pp. That is a long time to wait for a root canal. I had to have one done a couple of years ago. The only other pain that I had that was worse was childbirth. Mine was done in a couple of weeks. I don't think I could have handled the pain for much longer. (OK, bad part over)

Definitely bring some orajel w/ you. And don't forget that Motrin.

If you think the pain is bad now, wait until you get in the airplane and the air pressure changes. Unbearable is putting it mildly. Get it done before you go. Work out some kind of payment with the dentist. Good luck.

OMG! Please don't wait to have your root canal done. I know how incredibly expensive root canals can be but your trip to Disney is an expensive vacation to ruin. I have had to have nine root canals in my life time 9 (really problematic teeth) and I know the pain it can cause you.

If you can't get your insurance situation straightened out on time, do you have a teaching Dental School/Hospital in the area? They have supervised Dental School students who do very inexpensive root canals. They are supervised by Teaching Endodontists. My Endodontist takes payments for the balance of my root canals as insurance only covers about 60 percent of my bill. Root canals cost at least $1000.00 in my area. That does not include crowns and follow-up with your dentist which is another 1000-2000 dollars. So even 40 percent adds up to a large dental bill.

I hope you can get this taken care of prior to your trip. If not, please bring some strong pain meds from your doctor just in case.

I just realized you live in the Philly area like me. Try U of Penn, they have a teaching hospital.:)

I'm the one who had to have my wisdom teeth pulled exactly one week before our big Disney trip. Am I glad I just forked over that credit card and worked out the insurance details later (DH still working with them). I was miserable...and it would have been a horrible vacation. The nerve pain was gone almost instantly...I did take the vicadin with me and popped it a few times, but it was well worth having it done! Root canals....wisdom teeth...just do it!

Please do not take a chance. We almost lost our DD last year while in Orlando and it all started with a toothache. While they were never positive what caused Sarah to lose so much blood their best guess was that the antibiotic coupled with the pain medicine caused an ulcer to form and bleed. This was a tooth that had been filled weeks before. The packing had shifted and the filling was pressing into a nerve.

This is a link to the thread from her surgery. We just passed the one year mark.
