Staying DVC are room upgrades ever a possibility? Like AKL from a standard view to a savanna? Or any kind of upgrade anywhere else? Just wondering. I would never count on it just wonder how often if ever it happens.

We got one in June/July of 2014 at AKL Kidani from standard view to a savanna view for 9 nights, was shocked when we got to our room, but in over 10 years of stays that was the only one.

DVC doesn't overbook room categories like regular resorts do so it's rare. For example, if a regular resort is having a hard time filing the expensive rooms, they will overbook the lower price rooms to get rooms filled and then upgrade some people to the higher priced rooms. DVC doesn't do that. Any upgrades are typically due to room issues like a plumbing problem or something.

While it's happened, it's very rare. And IMO, asking for an upgrade for DVC done on points is both unethical and carries risk to the owner that they may get it and get charged the extra points.

Any room changes would come from the resort, not DVC. Lack of availability of the original room is the only reason that they would move you and if they do, check your points because they are usually messed up.

We are AKL right now and we were upgraded from standard view to savanna. At check in I asked for an upgrrade but with points as I had some use or lose due to a cancellation I did in Feb. he checked into it and gave us the upgrade...but didnt use any points. He did it for free. It was a nice surprise.

Others have already explained the reasons why it doesn't happen. We did meet a couple who were staying VGF for 1 night and they were reassigned to a Grand Villa! Since it was for 1 night and I believe there was a room or rooms out of service the chance of a repeat is very slim.

With that said I do keep my fingers crossed that a CM will have to move me to a Poly Bungalow on a future trip. The chance of that happen is probably less than winning the Powerball!

We got one this Christmas! We were upgraded for two nights from a standard view studio to a Savannah view studio. It was amazing!!! I wouldn't ever expect it, or even hope for it, but it did happen.

Unfortunately, now I've been spoiled and will always want a Savannah view.

Some of the standard view villas at AKV have a limited view of the savannas.

We have gotten 4 upgrades over 20+ years of DVC:
1. Once cause of over booking at VWL:
Booked a studio at VWL, when we tried to check-in, we had been upgraded to a WL 2 bedroom lake view suite. Called some family members to come and join us for an unexpected vacation.
2. Once cause of problem with check-in at AKL:
Booked a standard view studio at AKL-Jambo, checked-in, given a room key as the room was supposed to be ready, went to the room, and found suitcases and purse in the room along with the room not being made up. Went back to the front desk, they gave us an on-the-spot upgrade to a savanna view room in another part of the resort plus four free breakfasts.
3. DCL
Reserved an inside stateroom on DVC points but were upgraded to an ocean view room. We did not find out about the upgrade until we got to the room, what a surprise that was. When our luggage arrived it still had the old room number's tags on them.
4. AKL-Jambo
Booked a standard view room at 5 days out due to a last minute change in home plans. Given a Savanna View room.

No ours was definitely an upgrade. Our original reservation was cancelled so online check in didn't work. When I finally went to the desk to check in, the cm said "checking into a Savannah view studio for two nights?" I told her that didn't sound right, and she looked into things and discovered they had given us an upgrade. I had never gotten a room number text because with the new reservation number we were no longer checked in.

It has happened to us twice. A couple of years ago we booked a BW standard one bedroom over Easter Break and were upgraded to boardwalk view. The points were messed up but they were corrected within a few days.

Over Marathon weekend 2016 we arrived late on Wednesday night. At the airport, there was no record of our Magical express reservation. We had booked a BW standard studio for 4 nights. When we got to the hotel, I was told that our reservation was cancelled. Then I was told I owed $3100. I said that couldn't possibly be right. The cast member went in the back and when she returned she said that we had been upgraded to Club Level on the Boardwalk Inn side. There was no reason given but my guess would be the ongoing construction at the villas as the units are being refurbished. My points seem to be in good order.

I got an upgrade once at OKW. First, my Magic Band stopped working. When they finally got me into my Studio, while waiting for the repair on the lock, I noticed a waterfall coming out of the ceiling from the AC, near the kitchenette. When the "runner" who was helping me returned to my room and saw that, she moved me to a one bedroom.

We have been members since 2004, go usually twice and sometimes 3 times a year, and have never had an upgrade at DVC. Occasionally have been given rooms that I would consider questionable in the classification booked, like rooftop view or thatch awning view. Once we were upgraded, but we were staying at All Star sports and paying cash. We got a king bed room. The only problem was we had three in our party. It was over spring break, and they didn't have any 2-bed rooms available. Fortunately, our son was still small enough to sleep between us in a king bed.

Very, very rare. We were upgraded from a studio to a 1 BDR at Hilton Head in May (2015). First time since owning (2000).

We've lucked out once:flower1:a few years ago. We were on a flight into MCO after a cruise from San Juan, it was delayed and we didn't arrive at the resort until after 8 pm. Very surprised to be upgraded from studio to a 1 BR for a 3 night stay.

Just happened to us in November at VGF. Booked a standard studio and upgraded to lake view as family in standard studio did not want to transfer rooms for the other half of their stay. Best part was nothing changed about our points and the system thought we were cash guests so our room got cleaned every day. Now that was some pixie dust. Not sure it will ever happen again, but it was fantastic!

We have only had one sort of an issue over the years and we knew of the chang before hand
We were traveling with my wheelchair bound grandmother booked the handicapped 3 bedroom at okw at 11 months out
About 4 months out we got a call about an issue with our reservation must have been some work needed to be done on the unit
The only option available to us was a 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom At ssr
