I never go to WDW expecting a room upgrade, although it has happened once before at POR when we were moved from a standard to a river view room, which was nice. I was wondering if the upgrade fairy will toss some pixie dust my way during our next trip where my wife and I will be celebrating 25 years together. Is there a better shot when you are celebrating a significant event such as this, or is it completely random? We'll be at the Poly which will be wonderful anyway, but who knows what may happen?

In our experience, practically everyone is celebrating a birthday or anniversary so it seems pretty random. The two times we were upgraded we weren't celebrating anything at all, lol. I would definitey let them know, it can't hurt! Congrats on your 25th. Hope your trip is awesome.

I agree with Lisaloo that everyone seems to be celebrating something or another....

In over 40 trips I've received an upgrade ONCE from a standard room to a preferred room.

Every time we've been upgraded it has been a short stay (1 or 2 nights). Good luck! :D

I've been upgraded 3 times -- 2 of the times were single nights, the 3rd was three nights. The three night was to a preferred room, the single nights.....a lot of pixie dust both times, upgraded to a deluxe from a moderate.

We received a really awesome upgrade on our last trip (from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom villa--we were staying on a cash reservation) and we were celebrating absolutely nothing. We were staying for a full week, too, so I was totally shocked.

The room assignments are done well in advance of your arrival and I'm not sure if the room assignors even know whether a group is celebrating something. Based on our experience, I assume "upgrades" are done when a room class is accidentally overbooked and not because of anything related to the guest.

DH and I stayed at the Beach Club for our 25th, which was noted on our reservation. We never got an upgrade from the standard-view room that was booked. We were handed the token anniversary buttons at check-in, and that was it.

We stayed at BC and CR during our 10 year anniversary (checked out at BC and checked in at CR on the day of the anniversary)... and no upgrade.

We also stayed on my actual birthday before and no upgrade.

From everything I have read over the years... they wont upgrade just to "be nice" they will only upgrade if they have a need (overbooked or a room unexpectedly had to be taken out of service etc).

I've stayed at 4 different hotels at Disney world. Some were short stays (1 night) and some were longer (5 nights) and we've never received an upgrade, even when we were celebrating something. Only time we received an upgrade was at the Disneyland Hotel and were upgraded to a 1-bedroom suite! And the only thing we noted on that reservation was that we were celebrating my acceptance into the college program

I think it's random and based on the hotels need. We've received upgrades more times than I can remember. I don't note celebrations or ask for certain locations and the upgrades have usually been for short stays.

Updated to add I've been down-graded too, and not informed until I got to the room!

Congratulations on your anniversary! I hope you get some pixie dust.. It makes a special occasion that much more magical. We have been upgraded only once and it was when we honeymooned at the Contemporary. We had booked a lake view tower room. Upon checking in, we were upgraded to a theme park view club level room for the week (talk about WOW!).

I'm really not expecting any special treatment. Just getting Mickey confetti on the table at some of our restaurants would be a bonus...
