Anyone ever show up and ask for room upgrade?

Can they do that with reservation on points?

Cash differential?

If you request an upgrade and get one, they will deduct the additional points from your account. They probably won't even tell you that it's going to be more points.

If you are renting from a member, they will not contact that member prior to taking the points.

You cannot pay a cash differential. You would have to pay for the upgrade with points. Given the reports here about the mess the front desk CMs can make of your DVC account and how it can take weeks and several phone calls to MS to sort it out, I would not do it. People report that when the front desk modifies a DVC reservation, you can end up with points in holding, points borrowed unnecessarily, etc.

ETA: I assume the room you want is currently unavailable and you are hoping it might be available at check-in? You could try calling MS, even up to the day before check-in to see if something opens up and have them make the change to your reservation.

It is highly unlikely that DVC resorts would have availability to upgrade as they run as close to full occupancy as possible

I am out of points until 2015 I think...pull points from 2014 for this reservation...

It does happen rarely, last May my daughter was booked in a standard view room at AKV-Jambo and was put into a savana view room. I did check my points and there was no change. Other than that, I've never experienced an upgrade ever. As others have said, I would never ask, because they generally will redo your reservation and take the points needed without asking.

There is a big difference in being given an upgrade for operational reasons which is probably what happened to your daughter and requesting an upgrade

But was the room actually in the Savanna View category, or one of the Savanna View rooms that has been reclassified as Standard View?

Dunno, (it was this past May) when I booked it the reservation said Standard studio room (Jambo) and later it was changed to Savana studio room (Jambo). They watched giraffes in the morning. She checked in around 6:00PM that evening, so I figured there was an issue. I've stayed at least 30 times now in a DVC room since owning and never an upgrade, however, I was downgraded (sort of). I had booked OKW HH and was put elsewhere that was not in the HH area. I was not happy about that, but it was only for 1 night (before a cruise), so I let it go.

Disney would rather put DVC guests in a broken room than give you an upgrade. On rare occasions when they have no other choice, you might get a free upgrade but then again you might win the lottery.

I got an upgrade in view, standard to pool view 1 bedroom at BWV. We were even offered daily housekeeping. For me the scare was on arrival, when a dollar figure over $1000 was mentioned.(it may have been over $2000!). I asked if I should call DVC because I booked the villa on points. Someone was called over, I was told not to worry. It was a lovely view, and convenient to the hot tub.
This was in January, this year.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago at BWV. Upgraded from a standard 1br to a pool view 1br. Halfway thru the stay I checked my credit card account balance to find that they charged my card for something like $1800 (rack rate). Took a little bit of doing to get it corrected.

Then one time at OKW I was upgraded from a 1br to a 2br. They mentioned something at check-in that didn't sound right, and it seems that they were going to charge me rack rate again. But it was caught and corrected at check-in, and my card was never charged.

I've never asked for an upgrade but did receive one last September. We were booked at BCV for one night in a studio. We checked in and were told our room was ready. When we went to our room it was a one bedroom not a studio. We were never charged any additional points.

As I mentioned in the other thread, IMO it' inappropriate for a DVC points reservation to ask for an upgrade. Plus it has the real potential to mess up the account in a number of ways.

LOL! Now there is a perception difference! I would have called that one an upgrade for sure! Especially if you got Miller's Road or South Point! Not a fan of HH category.

Last month I had a Jambo 1 br value reserved for DH and myself and a Jambo Standard view studio reserved for friends for just one night. Our friends got upgraded to a regular hotel CL room.

Check-in was extremely busy and I went to the counter while a CM whisked our friends away at the front door to check them in. This is common at BWV so I thought nothing of it at first. DH went with them and the 3 of them were very confused when the CM said they would be going to the 6th floor for check-in.

Our friends were clueless, first time they had even ever step foot in the AKL, but DH was aware what the 6th floor was as we stayed there years ago prior to DVC. DH called me and I was concerned they were going to be put into a DVC CL room and more points would be taken from our account. I told him to make sure no one has touched our DVC account to take out more points.

I finally got myself checked in and was able to pull up my account activity. We checked in on 10/17 and on 10/16 the studio reservation was cancelled and a manual adjustment was made for the same # of points with no corresponding reservation #. Actually I was a little miffed that they did this to guests that were not members. I felt as if I, the member, should have been notified that they were making such a transaction in my account. I probably should have told MS that a courtesy email saying what they were doing would have been nice.

Anyway it was just one night. We cancelled our Boma breakfast reservation for the next morning and enjoyed the lounge instead.

Ditto. Not a fan of HH area at all.

A year ago we checked in for our first DVC stay at Aulani. I had booked 9 nights in a pool view, and requested the highest floor possible (some were reporting partial ocean views from there). We were magically upgraded to an ocean view! Also this was when they were doing construction and credited us 2 night's worth of points.

Such a magical trip!
