Room Requests

Okay, I'm new to all this trip planning stuff as this is the first WDW trip I'm taking as an adult, with my own kids. Past vacations have always been big family affairs given as Christmas gift by my parents. So, all the things to think about are getting a little overwhelming to me and I'm looking for opinions.

I have heard about making specific room requests via fax. There seem to be two opinions on this- that they're okay and they work and that they're tacky and they don't work anyway. What do you all think? If you do make room requests, how do you go about doing it AND which room requests do you make? We are staying at the Poly and I would really like to request one of the remodeled rooms (we're not going 'til end of September so I'm thinking there might be more done by then). I'm not aware of any other requests that I should make (except non-smoking). Any suggestions on this? Thanks!

Disney says you only need to note your requests with them on your reservation. However, their computer system loses requests whenever you make a major change to your ressie. I had my requests dropped numerous times. I leave on Saturday and they lost my requests 2 times in the past 4 days! UGH! Anyway, I asked the lovely woman on the phone if it would help to fax my requests. She said it couldn't hurt...but there is a priority system to them giving certain requests (like connecting rooms). She said to wait until 24 hours before you check in, though, because the hotels don't download your reservation until the day before you arrive. They used to download 4-5 days out, but no more. I faxed my requests on Tuesday, anyway, and will fax again Friday evening for good measure!

If your requests are noted in your reservation no need to fax.
