I made a reservation online. I have since changed it from a preferred room to standard (for free dining).

during the change it did not provide a place to make any room requests--as it has in the past (I'd like to request being away from a smoking section and close to the pool)

Where do you make such requests online?

During Online Check in
I doubt far from smoking section is one of the choices. Pool might be but isn't usually.
If the choices you want are not part of online check in you need to call and have notes of your request added to your reservation

Ah...I thought there would be an open text box I'll call. So spoiled avoiding having to call with everyone so simple online now Thanks!

I actually don't recall ever having an open text box for entering room requests. Not in the system before MDE. Maybe the one before that, we didn't book our first trip online till 2009
It was always something you had to call about.
There is an option to provide requests on Touring Plans, if you are a member there.

Go to your Dashboard and create a trip. From there it will give you a chance to select a resort. From there it will give you a chance to pull up a map of rooms. You can click on one, select to create a fax for a room request. Once you do that you'll have a link to Configure the Fax and it will give a box where you can type additional info. It should make sense once you see it

You don't fax it yourself. You enter your info and select your room on the room finder anytime you want. But they won't send your fax till about 5 days before your arrival.
