I can't remember how far in advance I should fax my request for a room or building. Also , anyone have a fax# for pop? We only have 31 more days!!

There's no need to send a fax. Just call CRO with your requests, either when you make your reservation or at any time after that. The requests will be in the system and will be right there when the room assigner calls up your reservation.

You should make your requests when you make your reservation. If you have not done so, I would suggest calling CRO or your travel agent and putting in a building request now so that it is on your reservation. Keep in mind that a request is just that, there are no guarantees. I would request a building but not a specific room. If you want a room facing away from the pool, or near the elevators, I would put that in the request.
As far as faxing in your request, this should be done no more that 4 days prior to your arrival date, here is some info from Deb Wills site:

"your 4 days prior to arrival this way:

Thursday - Arrival day/check-in
Wednesday - 1 day prior
Tuesday - 2 days prior
Monday - 3 days prior
Sunday - 4 days prior

Faxing after 4 pm is usually best only because the morning Room Assigner is usually bogged down with checkouts and the evening Room Assigner is usually dealing with check-ins until 4 pm. Honestly though, if you are faxing it doesn't matter when you send it. If they are busy they will file it and the evening Room Assigner will get to it when they start blocking requests."

The fax number for the POP is 407-938-4040

In the past, many of the "official" guides such as the Unofficial Guide advocated faxing requests. According to most of the same "experts" and accounts given here, the new system is based basically on your "reservation requests".

TGM and others go as far as to allude that it can be counterproductive to fax your request - check out their site to secure the reasons why.

I reccomend just making sure that you have your request with your room reservation.

Do you have to pay extra for a "requested" room?

what is the difference when you BUY a preferred room- would i get first choice?

requests are not for things that are paid upgrades, for instance you might request, near a pool or near the dining areas, or near bus stop, or first floor or higher floor etc.
requests are not such things as water view, King bed, or preferred location.

Also requests are just that requests they are not guaranteed.

I made all of my requests(which were quite a lot of them) just calling Disney with about 4 months in advance.
The lady on the phone was very nice and I'm really hoping my requests to be accepted.;)

could you tell me what is a preferred room and do I want to "buy" that?

"Preferred" can mean different things at different resorts. Generally, though, it means that you pay extra for a room that's close to the main building, where the main pool, food, and bus stops may be located.

Just to clarify what's been discussed here...

At most resorts, there are several room categories that can be booked. Examples might be a bunk-bed room at WL, a MK view room at CR, or a water-view room at POFQ. Or, a preferred room at Pop. If you want one of these sorts of rooms, which cost more than the standard rooms at these resorts, you need to specifically book that room category. For instance, you can't just request a water view room at POFQ - if you want that type of room, you have to book it.

What the posters are talking about here are more general requests.....wanting a room near a pool. Or a room on a higher floor. For this sort of thing, you simply call CRO (or have your travel agent call), and have them record your request on your reservation.

The difference is, if you book and pay for an MK view room at CR, you are guaranteed to get one. If you request a room near the pool at POR, they'll do their best to put you there, but it's not guaranteed.

Make sure that your request(s) is noted on your ressie first off. If you are planning to fax your request, do it 3 days in advance. We always send a fax, have been assured at check in that it was recieved and have gotten our requests each time. It may have helped, it may not have mattered, but it didn't hurt. The worst they are going to do is throw it away. You aren't going to be 'black flaged' at the resort.:goodvibes
