How does the room key option work at FW? Is this still a perk for campers to be able to "charge" souveniers to the room? And, does this perk also include being able to charge meals???

Yep! It works the same. You will get a "Key to the world card". This will have your park tickets and charging privledges. It also allows you to get into the comfort stations for those midnight potty emergencies!

Yep, you still get a "room key" at the Fort, and yes you can still charge on it.

Anything you can do with a normal room key you can do with a Fort room key, they are the same thing.

Since we've never been to WDW, we're just not sure exactly what can be charged. I know about the souveniers but want to know about food... and anything else you might know about. Thanks for letting me know we can still use this while camping at FW!

Yes, as long as you have it tied to a credit card during check-in you can use it for all Disney charging including meals. It will also be your DDP card if you go with that plan. As stated before the only rooms it unlocks are the Throne Rooms - any of them including the trading posts - and the laundry rooms between midnight and 6AM.

It is just like a credit card. They obtian a pre-approved amount from your own credit card and then allow you to charge that amount on the disney key card. You can use it to charge almost anything at a Disney facility whether food at restaurants or at the anything at the trading posts or other items subject to the limit they have placed on it. They then place the charged amounts from your key to your credit card when you check out.
