Room checks - perhaps this is the real reason (article linked in comments)

I know this has been suggested in other threads that I've been in, but I really think this is the real reason for the checks and not due to the Las Vegas shootings.

I wasn't sure where to post this so mods can move if it's not appropriate here.

We were at All-Star Music during these exact dates and had housekeeping. The only time we were "bothered" was our first full day when we came back from the parks to relax in the afternoon and they hadn't made up the room yet. It was about 1pm. I knew they would be coming so I didn't throw on the latch. I was by the sink and my husband was laying on the bed trying to nap, and the housekeeper knocked gently and then came in. She saw my husband and then closed the door right away. I went over and opened the door for her and said we didn't need anything but if she needs to check the room she can. She came in and walked through and looked in the bathroom area and left. She gave me a sympathetic look like she felt bad for having to do that. I understood but I was a little anxious having to wait for them to do that if they hadn't serviced the room yet.

I have suspected that for a while - no way are they looking for an arsenal. They are keeping ahead of any creeps who are harboring young kids. Gross. Keep doing what you do, Disney.

I don't think this is the reason for the room checks, but that's just my opinion.

According to the dis twitter account, one of the men arrested was a Disney bus driver. I'm sure Disney wasn't aware, of course, but another reason the room checks need to be done in a way that respects the safety and privacy of their guests.

Yes, check out the article link I posted above! Just nuts

I think the entire sex trafficking issue is related to room checks. You don't think a person could book a room in WDW (the mecca for children) and try to lure children?

Trafficking is a little different than the article listed in the OP.
But, trafficking could perhaps have something to do with the room checks.
This article was posted about a month before WDW changed their DND policy.

I looked for a more recent source to see what has happened in 3 months and it looks like the bill was postponed/killed last month. It appears that this is not the first time that this kind of bill has been considered and put down. I'm guessing that Florida lawmakers are not willing to put that size nail in the coffin for tourism. The bill among other things would require that hotels properly train staff to look for signs of human trafficking, which I am 100% for. This does not, by the way, go the way WDW staff appear to be going about it.

All that aside, WDW properties are a poor choice for human trafficking. The likelihood of it happening there is low due to cost, visibility (aka guard checks at hotels, number of staff present), and lack of quick exits off property to major interstates.

Correct. Human/sex traffickers are not likely to use Disney hotels where even a room with paper thin walls will cost you $175+.

You make good points. I still think the room checks are related. If they were looking for an arsenal they’d do more than quickly scan the room.

I don’t think the article is in any way related to the recent roomcheck policy at Disney.
I do however believe it’s more closely related to potential Crazies in a room harming guests...Vegas

Perhaps people will be more aware.. Disney is not any less immune to having Evil people employed/visiting etc
Some People feel they are in the Magic Disney Bubble and are perhaps more likely to loosen reins, take chances, especially with young/er kids...
a good reminder/alert that Evil lurks everywhere.

I have No sympathy for any of the alleged creeps, but certainly do for their families, horrifying!

I believe it is a common misconception that human trafficking only happens in "roach motels," and it actually can occur in motels and hotels at all price points (although I imagine the circumstances would vary by price point). It seems that hospitality industry, amongst others, has made a lot of progress in the past year or so to increase awareness of the issue, so I wouldn't be surprised if this had to do more with human trafficking/exploitation of children than with mass shootings. But that's just my $0.02. If you see something, say something.

Yep. Trafficking is a huge problem in the hotel industry. They are just now coming to realize just how bad and just how much their staff can do to stop it, with the proper training. We have the misfortune of being at a significant Interstate cross-roads here and there has been a lot of attention brought to it in the past couple of years by our local hotel/motel industry. Trying to spread the word to do just as the PP said, if you see something, say something. They are conducting seminars on warning signs and yes, it is more often than not, higher end, urban hotels that these organizations prefer, not fleabag motor inns. They want to look like couples/families on the surface.

Is that behind Disney's policy? Probably has a large part in it. More than Vegas. Though likely a bit of both.

The trafficking problem is just horrible! But you have to find a balance in trying to detect such activity in a hotel room vs. being too invasive on the guests privacy. Maybe better or more security cameras? You can watch the comings/goings of guests while not demanding entrance to each and every room. Yes maybe $$ but so is the manpower to check each and every room daily.

I agree. I think there are better ways to address the issue other than barging in on guests who are paying a premium to stay on Disney property.
