Well, the way it works is you can specify to
DCL a certain cabin number if it's available or they will tell you at time of reservation what cabins are available and you can choose one of those......but, if you are booked with what's called a GTY or guarantee...you will not know your cabin number until you check in at the port or sometimes DCL will assign you a cabin a few weeks before sailing...it depends on a lot of different circumstances...like how many people cancel, or how many cabins are sold in a specific category, etc.
A GTY means that right now DCL cannot assign you a specific cabin because all the cabins in that category are already assigned. But, you are guaranteed at least a cabin in that category you requested or be upgraded to a higher category. This can be beneficial to you.
DCL does a lot of rearranging of cabins due to all kinds of circumstances during the last few weeks/days before the cruise. If a cabin opens up in the catgory you requested you will assigned to it, or if no cabin opens up in the category you requested you will upgraded to higher category.
Some people like this, some people do not. Some people want to know from day 1 what their cabin is....but, unfortunately the later you book, the choice of specific cabins are less.
