Sorry, this is probably a stupid question, and is likely to be very subjective and/or biased, but

Is there any secret to picking between the two TS restaurants in each land at WS?

Teppan Edo vs. Tokyo?

Monssiur Paul vs Chefs de France?

SRT vs Marrakesh?

etc?

In other words for someone like me, who has no experience at these restaurants, not enough time to eat at all of them, and since they seem very similar on paper - how do you decide?

Thanks for any advice!

As far as Japan restaurants. Would you want a full hibachi experience or would you rather just sit at your own table and eat sushi and other Japanese cuisine?

We always prefer Teppan Edo as it's always been excellent.

I would love to do the hibachi thing, but my in-laws that are coming with us on the next trip aren't very adventurous when it comes to food, so both Japanese restaurants are likely out. Thanks for clearing-up that difference!

What about Morocco and France (and are there any other lands with 2 restaurants)?

The restaurants seem very similar to me, and maybe I'm just glossing over the information, but there seems to me that there has to be some significant difference between the restaurants - otherwise, why not just have a single, really big restaurant?

Thanks again.

Disney likes to give choices.

As far as non-adventurous family members. Morocco would be out.

Honestly, the Japanese hibachi is just meats (steak, chicken or seafood) grilled with noodles and veggies on the big hibachi grill with a 'show' (they also serve white rice). It's nothing adventurous as far as eating in the WS is considered. My hubby when we first went to WDW 7 years ago ate nothing but burgers and pizza lol and I took him to Teppan Edo and he got the chicken meal (Tori) and it's now his fave restaurant in the whole place.

I can't tell you about France because we've never had the desire to dine there at the TS. We do love the bakery though. ;)

Monssiur Paul is considered fine/signature dining. Chefs de France is more casual.

Spice Road Table is casual and has a large covered outdoor seating area with nice water views. Restaurant Marrakesh has belly dancers.

As far as others, Italy has the casual Via Napoli with a focus on pizzas and basic pasta choices. Tutto Italia is a nicer, calmer sit down experience.
In Mexico, San Angel Inn is inside the pyramid. It's dark, pretty casual, often hectic. La Hacienda de San Angel is quieter and service moves at a slower, calmer pace. There are nice water view tables here. I feel like the later has a lighter, brighter menu with more seafood and fresh veggie choices whereas the former is a heavier menu with emphasize on rice, beans, and meats.

The calculus that goes into a restaurant selection is personal - no matter where you are or where you are from.

Some folks select places because they are unique in a way (i.e., belly dancer at Marrakesh, hibachi cooking at Teppan Edo, sitting by the lake at SRT).

Other places are simply uniquely-Disney (i.e., eating inside the aquarium at Coral Reef).

Some places at Disney are referred to as Signatures with the result being more upscale service, food quality - and higher prices.

FWIW, I would start my search by reviewing the menus. And then, maybe look at the Review section at the top of the Restaurant Board. But please be forewarned, no restaurant at Disney receives universal remarks; there are both good & bad reviews of just about every place.

For instance, my family loves BlueZoo (in Dolphin hotel), but I just commented to someone who had a horrible experience. Some folks rave about CA Grill (atop the Contemporary), but we find it hit-or-miss. More importantly, not everyone who writes about food knows what good food really is, but they know what they like. For instance, yellow mustard is a must for some people; others, like me, think it should be banned from supermarket shelves. Is it the 'best Chinese food ever' if it subsequently becomes drenched in duck sauce?

"Different strokes for different folks," as they say.

To your list:
- Japan. Food is fine at both places. We like the hibachi at Teppan Edo. But we have places we prefer....

- Morocco. Marrakesh can be loud, but fun in the 'authentic' setting - great value too. SRT is good food and 'fair value', but what the place lacks in cultural-ambiance is offset by sitting on the lake.

- France. We eat here mostly. In general, we grab quick-serve of Champagne, cheese, and ice cream. But there is huge difference between Chefs & M.Paul - M.Paul is a Signature experience (and possibly the best in-Park restaurant at Disney), Chefs is onion soup & steak frittes.

I hope this helps.

OhanaHare, whatsthebuzz, and JZCubed,

Thanks so much for the input. Those comments are exactly what I was looking for. You guys have helped tremendously.

The only problem for me as far as looking at the menus - I am not a foodie by any means, and I didn't understand enough about the food on the menus to tell the difference. Especially when the menus are in French :o

You're welcome. If you need more help understanding the differences between specific places, just ask.

Disney menus are in English and/or give descriptions that are in English.

I do realize that not everyone is a foodie, therefore, some menu items appear unapproachable. For me, that's part of the fun - learning more about things for which I am unfamiliar.....but not everyone wants to be a foodie.

Said differently, "Some folks live to eat, others eat to live."

Take a look at some of those menus - PM me with any questions. I'll try to assist you further....because I enjoy teaching others about food too.

Since you have non adventurous eaters, I would suggest, Le Cellier, Canada- basically a steakhouse or Japan- because they can get a nice chicken or steak meal with some veggies. The hibachi show can be fun...other suggestion...Via Napoli is pizza place in Italy but if they love Italian food, Tutto Italia is good. Mr. Paul is gourmet and pricey...Chefs de France is great but a bit noisy and chaotic. Places I would recommend staying away from for your group, Nine Dragons in China and Restaurant Marrakesh. The Mexican food in San Angel Inn is not Americanized but it is a cool restaurant for atmosphere. Like you said food choice is very subjective...just read the menus and if it all goes wrong, buy your gang a cheeseburger later...

Teppan Edo is a restaurant that is frequently appealing to families probably due to the show the cooks put on as they cook the food. It has group seating and no windows. Tokyo Dining serves a different type of Japanese cuisine and for my view the focal point is more on the food.

M. Paul offers a version of French cooking that is more related to haute cuisine with complex sauces and has a more formal style of service. The food of CdF is brasserie and what you would find in a typical cafe in Paris as well as the provinces.

Marrakesh serves the food of the cities of Morocco basically while Spice serves a more comprehensive visit of the entire country.

Take a look at the menus and gallery of pictures to get a better idea of what each restaurant look like and how the food is served.

also look at DFB (Disney food blog) on YouTube.

We went to Teppan Edo because my MIL is pickier than your average toddler. Honestly I've put it in the "maybe" pile as to if we'd return. The food was good, but our chef was less than entertaining (and the style of cuisine is readily available where we live)

I've never gone to the restaurants in France, but both look appealing to me.

Marrakesh can be a fun time, but whatever I ate haunted me...I'm more interested in trying Spice Road Table next time I'm there.

As far as what to decide, sometimes we don't. Sometimes we just work our way through the counter service locations and eat around the world.

I do think with picky eaters your best bets are:

Le Cellier
Teppan Edo
Rose and Crown

Fine list you wrote. I'd add to it the eateries of the Germany Pavilion, since so many are familiar with it as a byproduct of the deli counter experience, as well as Katsuri Grill since it reminds so many of their starving student days of ramen noodles but in a better way.
