My parents will be traveling with us to WDW and they attend Mass every Sunday. Would anyone know where I can take them to Mass?? And if they're modern enough to have a website for mass times?? Thank you.

We attended the mass that the shrine used to hold at the poly luau cove a few years back and it was very nice, but like the shrine website states, was very crowded.

the shrine is beautiful and the grounds surrounding it are nice as well. if you parents can get a a taxi or other transportation there for mass they will surely enjoy the experience.

There is another Catholic church near WDW called Holy Family Catholic Church. Their web site is: www.holyfamilyorlando.org
If you take a taxi to church ask the driver to come back to pick you up, sometimes it hard to get a taxi back to Disney World.

If you have a rental, I would avoid Mary Queen of the Universe. First it was way to busy and second if the priest mentioned the gift shop one more time I was going to walk out. While I am not catholic and DH is, I felt it was extremely unappropriate. We are trying somewhere new this year, even if we have to drive another 15 minutes.

I second agotta's response - as a former altar boy (yeah, I can't believe it sometimes, either), it was a bit different than what I'm used to.

You might want to check with your local diocese to see what they recommend. I've not tried Holy Family, but might this next trip.

Thanks for all the wonderful information. My parents will be grateful when they hear of your kind responses.

Can someone please elaborate on what was "different" about the church? I understand the pushing the gift shop but is there more? We plan to go there on Easter but dont want to go to something commercialized and money making if you know what I mean!

The Shrine is not really a chuch. It has no normal parish and is dependent on tourists so they push the offering and the gift shop.

It's part of the diocese of Orlando, but I don't think they have a traditional parrish, at least in the sense that, say, my regular church (St. Paul the Apostle, for reference) in Greensboro does. That makes them, I think, more dependent on tourism dollars. In my opinion, they ask for donations much sooner, and more frequently in the mass than any church I've attended in recent memory. Last time I was there, they were selling the opportunity to have your name inscribed on one of their roof tiles, for something like $100. Just didn't feel right. Then again, it may be my dad rubbing off on me - he's still protesting the fact that mass isn't said in Latin any more.

That being said, lots of folks love the place. If MQOTU is much more convenient for you to get to, it'll be fine.

When we're at Disney, we go to Holy Family and LOVE it!! They are so welcoming there and no mention of gift shops. They are a regular parish and they know that there are usually visitors there. We felt quite at home there.

I'm still hoping they have an Easter on site Mass! Anyone know for sure?

They don't have any services onsite anymore.

I have to say that we've attended services at Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine twice and, from reading about the issue on these boards, was especially sensitive to any gift shop/financial contribution comments during the services and there were NONE! Now, the bulletin had some mention of those things, but most parishes with a gift shop do. I honestly did not experience any mention of money-making opportunities for the church when we went.

I believe that WDW has Catholic Masses on Christmas and Easter at the Contemporary Hotel.
I remember reading this last year. I'm sure someone will know for sure.

It is not our favorite worship experience, either. My brother is a priest, so he says Mass for us in our room when he travels with us........yes, this is "legal"! :) My concern for the Queen of the Universe shrine is that when we asked the clerks in their store whether we could use their phone (the pay phones were broken and I had left my cell phone in my other purse), they were extremely rude. We wanted to call our taxi company to pick us up; luckily the gal arrived anyway because she knew approximately what time the Saturday evening Mass was through. We don't expect folks to be saints, but basic courtesy would be nice. And I have heard folks being berated by the ushers in the shrine about arriving late (not everyone has a car!), while the priest was spending 10-15 minutes talking about where everyone was from. The Real Mass commonly does not begin unil 6:15 or so.....After many years, I really began to find it annoying. If you are arriving by taxi, it is nice to have some idea when Mass will be over.

Yes, MQotU is a SHRINE, not a Parish and as such, they must rely on the donations of visitors to maintain the facilities and services. Due to my work schedule, I often end up at Mass there and while some priests there are better at expressing the mission and needs of the Shrine, I have never felt that they were being pushy about it. And I've never heard them exhorting people to spend money at the gift shop either. Yes, they mention it is there and invite people to look around but thats about it. If they push anything, it is the fact that a priest is available for the sacrament of reconciliation just about all day every day. I'm sorry if people have felt otherwise, but I can assure you that their experience is not typical based on my frequent attendance at MQotU.

Len Testa...if you are a parishoner at St Paul it explains a lot, lol. I went there once right when I moved to Greensboro and vowed never to go there again - I wasn't even sure I was in a Roman Catholic church. But to each his or her own. You probaby won't like Holy Family much either if that is the case, but give it a try, it is a fabulous parish. I actually find that Holy Family talks as much or more about getting money from parishoners because they are doing some projects and every Sunday Fr. Ennis goes into detail about what they are doing and how everyone needs to contribute. But my focus is on the liturgy of the word and the Eucharist so I don't worry much about the other stuff.

Holy Cross is also a great parish located on John Young Parkway. From WDW take the 417 to John Young and turn left onto John Young. Holy Cross will be on the right, less than 1 mile up the road. They also have Mass in Spanish for those who prefer.
