Wehave basic cable ands internet for $45 /mo total. BIL mentioned the ROku box to open better viewing options for TV for the kids and some movies...any thoughts?
Currently we do Redbox for movies. Roku is ? $ 59 for the box and we can do Netflix eventually for $8 /month. Looking for budget options.

We have a Roku box and use it to stream Netflix. We like it a lot, but it could not replace cable for us since it's hard to find new shows on it.

You will still need your internet, so I am not sure if it will save you money. Some providers charge more if you have internet only and if you're only paying $45/month I would stick with that.

We dropped cable 2 years ago and use Roku w/Netflix instead. We have DSL and it streams fine to the TV. True, there are no "current" episodes on Netflix, but they have a great back catalog of shows and seem to be getting newer movies faster. There is also the Newscaster channel, which runs things from CNN, CNBC and Fox News.

We have Roku boxes and stream Netflix ($10.50/mo) and HuluPlus ($7.99/mo) and we pay $39 for Cable Modem.

They told us it would be $74 to have internet and cable TV. That includes no DVRs or receivers. So, I would say you are getting a very good deal with cable and TV for the price you pay.

We got the more expensive Roku boxes ($99 and free shipping on Amazon.com) They have several models. Make sure you go to Roku.com first to see the differences in the models.

We just went this route last week. Our bill from Comcast for Internet and the Budget cable was $101 a month! :confused3 This was on top of Netflix ($15) for streaming and 2 discs. So I turned the boxes back in to have cable cut off, kept our internet, dropped our Netflix down to just streaming and bought a Roku from BB for $78. We have signed up for Hulu Plus ($8/mth) and although we're not saving a huge amount of money we are saving a bit and have better TV than what we had with cable. Granted we did get rabbit ears to get our local stations for news and such. Total out of pocket = $78 (box) + $15 for rabbit ears, monthly fee for netflix $10 and hulu $8, Comcast about $60.
Of course, $45 for both, I would jump right on that in a heartbeat!! :lmao:

My SIL has Roku and likes it but we have Boxie, and we love it. We already had Netflix, this has definitely saved us money and we haven't missed the cable a bit.

Can you get Huluplus on Boxee? I thought I had read that it didn't. Apple TV doesn't support huluplus and is only 720p which keeps me away from purchasing it, even though I like that it can stream my itunes video purchases.

Roku is 1080p and supports HuluPlus and Netflix, which is why I chose Roku over the others.
