OK, those of you who have seen Rogue One... thoughts? If you haven't seen it, I suggest stop reading now unless spoilers don't bother you.

My thoughts...
DS and I saw it at 12:45 today. Theater was ~75% full. I was disappointed they didn't do the "words flying through space" bit with the Star Wars theme music.
I liked the story (actually much better than Force Awakens).
About 3/4 of the way through I realized the final battle had to be a suicide mission (yes, I'm a little slow sometimes). Anyone who survived would have been a part of the rebel alliance in Episode 4.

Two plot holes for me... when did C3PO and R2D2 (seen on Yavin 4) get onto Leia's ship?
And, once Leia's ship escaped by going into hyperspace, why didn't they jump into hyperspace at the beginning of Episode 4?

I did think they did a good job bringing a young Leia back (I'm assuming CGI).

Anyone else?

They didn't do the words because they wanted to separate the "Star Wars Story" films from the "Episodes." However, as they passed through the rings at the beginning, I thought it did actually look like the scroll, but we were on the wrong plane to read the words. I don't know if that was intentional or not

There are a lot of hidden references in the movie. It really is a movie for Star Wars Geeks. While on Yavin IV, a couple people are hailed over the speakers. One of them is Captain Antilles, so I think it implies that the Tantive IV was at Yavin IV, so the droids would have boarded at the same time as their master. If you watch the animated show Rebels, they also call General Syndulla, which is believed to be a reference to Hera Syndulla, also the Ghost is in the battle of Scarif, and Chopper, her droid, is seen in a couple shots at Yavin IV.

The second plot point, I will assume that they pursued by Vader long enough that their hyperdrive was damaged before we join the battle in Episode 4 and they were no longer able to jump to hyperspace.

Not only young Leia, but Tarkin were done using motion capture actors with CGI overlays so we "see" Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher. I assume you also noticed that Red Leader and Gold Leader were also in the final battle, the same actors who appear in Episode 4. We think they used the same shots as from A New Hope with some new dialog. They seemed to do the same trick as the pre-show on Tower of Terror, where we would see them say certain words, then they would cut away for the new dialog.

I liked the movie, I think, more than Force Awakens too. I like the secondary characters more, the flow of the plot, the seriousness while still being funny. My biggest complaint about TFA is that it was too much action, that the movie never had time to "breathe." In this one, I think the balance was better. The exception is that I like Rey more than Jyn. For all the talk of her being a tough female character, I felt like she was a more annoying Rey. But it sounds like all the reshoots changed her character the most.

My plot annoyances were 1. that while the trick of having the Tantive IV docked to the Mon Cal ship was "cute," in actuality, I don't think Leia would have been in such a close position to the battle for what they would have believed was a suicide mission. I believe the ship might have been at Scarif, but farther away, watching and able to report, and escape. Plus, in Episode 4 Vader talks about the ship receiving a transmission, and here, they handed off a data card. So IMO, I think the corvette that was docked should have been destroyed, and then cut to a scene of the Tantive 4 farther away confirming that the received the transmission. But that's just me. Second, why the heck does Emperor Palpatine not have a spy who follows Bail Organa wherever he goes? He was a major political leader and other powerful people like to spy on those type of people. Then the Empire would have learned where the rebellion was headquartered sooner.

But I did really like that they made a movie more for fans than the general public.

I have less than no desire to see this movie BUT being the good wife I am, I have tickets to go on Boxing Day (our anniversary no less).

I know I will be hearing about the plot holes and secondary characters until my eyes glaze over...

I thought it was great and the chi Leia bit at the end is so cool. It is definitely a movie for the fans and they have a formula down. I found myself knowing everything that was going to happen before it happened so maybe it was predictable but I think maybe that's what people like. That we know what's going to happen.

Thanks. I actually noticed the page, but didn't put two and two together.

Was that like saying you knew what would happen when you saw Titanic? :cool1:

I liked it! Dug the nods to episode 4...like when they bumped into the two aliens from the Mos Eisley cantina (Walrus guy).

I'm assuming that Vader spent a least a little time chasing after the Corvette and that episode 4 doesn't pick up immediately where Rogue One ended.

I was surprised they used the CGI Tarkin as much as they did. It was very well done, except for the eyes. The eyes ALWAYS blow it.

Disclaimer: I'm not a hardcore Star Wars fan and I don't know all the minutiae of the universe - I watched all the 'main' films for the first time last year right before TFA came out, I follow Rebels on Disney XD, and I read the Bloodline novel that came out shortly before TFA. (Clone Wars is in my Netflix queue and the Catalyst Rogue One novel is on my Kindle to read when I have time.)

That said, I liked TFA better. The gritty-grimdark rocks-fall-and-everyone-dies tone does nothing for me, but I did enjoy the movie for what it was. I think I held out hope that the last of the 'good guys' would find a way out longer than most viewers did. I'm a characters person, not a plot person, and I didn't feel particularly satisfied by watching 2 hours of people doing stuff and then dying at the end, even if the stuff they did served a bigger purpose.

I didn't think the CGI characters were that obvious. Leia looked brighter than everything around her, but if I hadn't been previously aware that Carrie Fisher doesn't look like that anymore, I would have just assumed it was an effect added for thematic tone. I had no idea that the other guy people are discussing was CGI - I didn't know the actor was dead and would never have guessed if I hadn't read about it online. I was actually really confused about what character it even was until I googled some images and compared them to the old films.

Not exactly. We were only just introduced to thes characters and it was pretty obvious that each one would die when and how they did. And you know the dude who falls on the platform is going to be behind the bad guy when he's after Gyn. I feel like I could've wrote this movie so easily. Literally the entire movie I'm like watch this happen and it happens.

Eh. You just happened to be thinking very similarly to whoever wrote the film. I'm a long time SW fan-nerd and I didn't think/know everyone was going to die. Kept waiting for someone to manage to get out. I had the same issue as you with The Sixth Sense. I knew within the first 5 minutes of the movie that Bruce Willis was dead and that only the kid could see him. I kept wondering how everyone else was so shocked. It was blatantly obvious to me.

If you think about it, it doesn't take a lot of logic to realize all of these key personnel had to die, otherwise they'd play a role in the battle of Yavin in Episode 4. Now, you anticipated the droid being shot by troopers while guarding the data banks? Jyn's dad being killed by attacking rebel craft? The "Ninja Jedi" being killed after throwing the "master switch"? His buddy being blown up? The two leads holding hands on a beach when the death star shoots the data storage facility?

The sixth sense had me going. In my defence I know what is going to happen in a lot of movies tv shows. I still think there is a formula. Maybe they teach it in screen writing school and that's why so many movies are so predictable.

I certainly wouldn't go that far. Jyns dad was obviously going to die so we could have the touching moment where she's holding him in her arms as he says his final words. When it comes to the deaths if you noticed they each had one task they had to complete and once they completed that task they died. Pilot needs to plug cord in and make connection with rebels...done...dead. Ninja has to flip switch...done...dead. I hope Jyn and whatever that other guys name wouldn't die because they are our heros but technically they completed their task so I guess they had to die too...lol

I thought it was great. I am a casual fan, though, so take that for what it's worth. I hated the CGI Peter Cushing. Maybe if I was a true fan I would have loved it but every time he was on screen it really took me out of the movie.

Saw it yesterday. Not a huge Star Wars fan, but enjoyed R1 and TFA.

I think I missed something though. The rebels got the plans, but did Jyn tall anyone who survived where the weakness is? The plans for the Death Star aren't much help unless you have an idea of what type of weakness you are looking for.

I believe the weakness was detailed in the specific file referenced by Jyn's father (Stardust), which they searched for and specifically pulled from the memory banks. I think that the Rebel engineers should be able to spot the flaw with minimal guidance.

During the movie, my 9 year old said that Tarkin looked like "one of the ministers" from Harry Potter. I blew it off, but when I got home to look up how they created the character, I saw that the actor who they used to digitally recreate Tarkin/Cushing played Pius Thicknesse, the Minister of Magic in The Deathly Hallows. Good eye, kid!

I really liked it -- it even made me cry.

Really enjoyed this movie as a huge Star Wars fan. If I went to the movies more, I'd definitely would want to see this again. But this is a sure buy for me when it comes to blu-ray release.

We saw it on Saturday. I am not a hard-core Star Wars fan, although I've seen all the movies multiple times because my DH loves Star Wars. I saw all the original movies in the theater with my dad when I was a kid.

Personally, I hated it. I felt no connection with any of the characters because I didn't find any of them likable except for the blind Jedi (or semi-Jedi?). The fact that every main character dies in the end was really off-putting to me - I understand that most of them had to die because of the tie-in to the next film, but there was no reason to kill off every single one. And as always, I'm irritated that they can't seem to make a movie in this genre without more than one female character in it who is important to the storyline. And the droid played by Alan Tudyk was annoying, in my opinion, which was a huge surprise since he's one of my favorite actors.

In contrast, I LOVED The Force Awakens and have seen it many times. Although it had some of the flaws of the other Star Wars films (again, only one female main character), I felt like they really made an effort to make that film entertaining. There was chemistry between the characters, there were many funny points, and BB8 was cute and engaging.

And before anyone flames me, I know this isn't a popular opinion. My DH LOVED it. But it's how I feel.

I'll join you in the "unpopular opinion" corner. I much, much preferred The Force Awakens and found Rogue One to drag. I couldn't get connected to any of the characters and found the 3D downright horrific. TBH, the poor quality of the 3D may have played a major role in my unenjoyment of the the movie. The blurriness was literally giving me vertigo.

I also thought K2SO was irritating and his "funny" lines were forced and ineffective.

I liked it. DH and DFIL liked it very much. I thought the CGI overlays were very well done. I've seen a bunch of "fanboy" types online saying how bad the Tarkin CGI was and I'm like, "No, there are people out there who are not huge SW fans, who don't even know who Tarkin is/was, and I guarantee you they thought that was a real guy." This includes my MIL, who actually did recognize it as the "the same guy who was on the Death Star in Star Wars", and then got to be shocked when told the original actor died years ago.

My favorite part was actully when Bale Organa, in a throwaway line, says he must return to Alderan. I leaned over to DH and said, "Well.....bye."

That and, "Are you kidding?! I'm blind!"

I watched it, LOVED it....better than TFA in my opinion and connected so well to Episode IV, considering it could be a new "must watch" for new people to watch Star Wars who haven't seen it, before seeing Ep IV
