Rogers supports iPhone tethering while in Canada. I don't believe AT&T supports it yet in the U.S. Does anyone know what happens if I try to tether my iPhone while in the U.S. Will it work and charge me the regular roaming data rate, or will it simply not allow the tethering?

DO NOT use your iPhone in the US at all. I've heard horror stories of friends getting a $1,000 plus bill when they arrived home.

Take a non-data phone with you.

I take my iPhone with me regularly into the U.S. both for business and vacation. I just make sure I have the right data roaming plan on my package. If you don't know what you're doing it can really ring up big bills. I just haven't been since to the U.S. since Rogers supported tethering.

If you have tethering working on your iPhone then it will work in the US and you will be charged the data roaming rate. Tethering is controlled by the carrier profile and not the network you're running on. AT&T's network supports tethering but AT&T customers simply aren't allowed to set it up.

It's not the iPhone but my mom has a regular cell phone with Rogers and whenever we travel to the United States the first she turns it on it says AT&T, then gets a text message saying welcome to Rogers USA service or something like that, so hopefully my reply helps you.

You can also lower your costs dramatically for international text messaging by getting the iPhone app "Ping!".

OK, so how DO you add a US voice or data plan from your Rogers iPhone? The website says to launch your phones WAP browser or some such. I'm guessing that it's a feature on non-iPhones? I'm hesitant to call Customer Service based on some of the pp's experiences. TIA :)

PS: I've also checked my options logging into the Rogers self-serve site but I'll be darned if I can find anywhere to add the US plans.

My advice is to call the Rogers help number.

Go to Add-Ons - Travel with Your phone
They have added some more reasonable one time, they call them Travel Packs, add ons for US voice and data

We are going to use this rather than buying disposable US phones on our upcoming trip.

We turn off the data roaming and set up a wireless router in the room to use the internet connection (DVC so it is free). Not quite as convenient but works for us.

I don't have an i phone yet, but when I travel in the states I get an add on from Telus. However many minutes I think I will need, no long distance or roaming charges. It's a North America plan. Because I have a text plan, it's automatically incl. in this.
Can't wait to get i phone. Contract is up in Feb :)

OK, I've seen this page before, clicked on the voice roaming link, clicked on "Sign in to add this essential" button, signed in, but then where in the heck is it once you log in? Not under "Manage my wireless account" that's for sure.:confused3

I'm headed down to WDW this month and just added the Rogers one-time data and voice roaming packs to my Blackberry account. When I checked online the voice roaming pack showed on the list of essentials options but not the data packs. I had to call and speak to an agent to add them. It took about 5 minutes to get the whole thing done.

Can someone explain what tethering is? :confused3
Tethering allows you to use your cell phone's data link as an internet connection for your computer. It is very useful in situations where you don't have access to a WiFi network. I believe it is free on Rogers right now if you have more than a 1GB data plan. In the new year the free part ends but Rogers hasn't said what the new fee structure might be. You may have to call Rogers to enable tethering.

Thanks for the explanation!

Oh no I did not know they were going to be charging soon for tethering! That is irritating, we don't use it often but it is handy for when we need it.
Plus we got the big data plan (it was a good deal when iphone came out) and get 6GB a month, which we don't even use 1GB at this point.

On the roaming and such I had a email just a few days ago from Rogers it was a one time add on for a month, which was $30 for 10MB, which is decent. Good luck not sure we will need it, try not to use data in the US, but who knows we just might.
