My nephew wants Rock Band 3 for Xbox with the new Pro guitar. If he plans to use Pro mode in the game, do we also need to upgrade his drums to Pro or will his standard drums work? Also, he could care less about the keyboard -- but is it a must have for the game?

THANKS!

ETA - OK, so he just wants Rock Band 3 plus the Pro Guitar (no drums or keyboard) -- is that possible or does he need to have the other pieces of equipment too?

I believe that you have to use all the same gear. So if you use RB2 drums, you have to use RB2 guitar. There is going to be a fee to transfer all the music that has been downloaded to use with the new RB3.

There's still plenty of people that like rockband 2, so he might be able to get a bit of money off the old gear.

You can still use the old sets with the rockband 3 game you just can't use them in pro mode. My friend has the pro keyboard, but he didn't need the pro drums to use the keyboard in pro mode. The game has where you select the mode and it will recognize there are not pro drums so it will not let you select that option. Pro mode is a by instrument basis. If he just gets the pro mode guitar and rockband 3 that's fine and he will still be able to use all his old gear from rockband 2 with rockband 3 just not in pro mode. He will be able to use the guitar in pro mode or normal mode. I hope that makes sense.

Yes, this. You can mix and match the instruments because each player chooses their own difficulty level. So you could have someone playing an old guitar as the bass on easy while he plays a new pro guitar on pro mode. If he just wants to play by himself using pro guitar, he can also do that. You only need one instrument to play, it doesn't matter which one. So he wouldn't have to have any of the other equipment if he didn't either want to play it or to have someone else playing at the same time as him.

THANKS! I was so confused (feeling old!) I didn't understand what he had and what he wanted from the new game! Now I get it :)

Ok, so I was proven wrong.

But in my search, I did find you only need the cymbals to go into pro mode on 3 with the drums, so you can use the old drum set too. But there only seems to be two guitars that are for pro mode. So look into it carefully or ask him which guitar he wants. You don't want to get the wrong thing.

One of the two guitars that will work with pro mode is out now. It's the Wireless Fender Mustang Pro-Guitar Controller, which is $149.99. The other one - the Squier Stratocaster - doesn't come out until March 2011, and will cost $279.99. That one will be really neat . . . it will actually be a functional real guitar and also work as a controller for pro mode in the game. If this is going to be a Christmas present, though, it isn't a good option since it won't be out for several months.
