Friday 10th September, 2004 - Rock Hall of Fame Announces Finalists

Here are the 15 finalists for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2005:

J. Geils Band
Sex Pistols
Patti Smith
The Stooges
The Pretenders
Randy Newman
Gram Parsons
Buddy Guy
Conway Twitty
The O'Jays
Percy Sledge
Wanda Jackson
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five

Ballots were mailed to voters this week and are due back at the Hall of Fame Foundation headquarters by Oct. 8. Inductees are normally announced in November.

Between 5 - 8 of the above artists will be selected, and inducted into the Rock Hall's Class of 2005 (the RRHOF's 20th Class). Ceremonies will take place in March at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York

Well, U2 is a slam dunk first ballot HOF act. Without question. I've been waiting for them to be nominated, I can't believe they've been around for 25 years already!

Personally, I think it's a fairly weak class of nominees other than U2. I've always liked the Pretenders but I'm not really sure that they're HOF worthy. I'd be hard pressed to come up with 5-8 artists from that list that I think are worthy of HOF consideration. A bit of a weak class if you ask me!

I'm with you on U2. The Sex Pistols are a slam dunk as well, being one of the first punk bands.

The Sex Pistols have been nominated for several years now and have not been selected. This is not their first nomination. Maybe this year, because the rest of the nominees are not very strong, they might be able to make it in.
